The Son is eternally generated by the Father, eternally proceeding from Him. When he becomes human, this identity becomes mission. Those united to Jesus through Baptism share in his missionary personality, not only corporately as the whole Church but individually as well. Beginning with the Second Vatican Council, and developed by subsequent papal teaching, the Church has rediscovered her missionary nature with clearer reference to Christ and the Gospel, and in more direct relation to the world and its needs. The Church's proclamation is most compelling when it is embodied by witnesses who have verified by experience the fulfillment of their humanity in a lived Christianity. This proposal is never a one-sided matter, but always involves an awareness of solidarity and reciprocity, an experience of encounter and discovery, and so becomes a journey of accompaniment and conversion for the bearer of the message. This is the rationale for widespread participation in missionary activities in the Church. Because of its affinity with the healing ministry of Jesus, medicine offers a unique possibility in this regard. Precisely because of the good they can accomplish and the challenges they can provoke, medical missions present a privileged opportunity for witness and generosity, but also for a new perspective and a changed heart for the participants. Together with those whom they serve, missionary disciples have the joy of joining the triumphal procession of Christ back into the heart of the Father.</p>","PeriodicalId":505854,"journal":{"name":"The Linacre Quarterly","volume":"88 4","pages":"355-371"},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2021-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8689499/pdf/10.1177_00243639211040587.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"39636073","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

MCI's mission is to carry out the work of Evangelium Vitae (the Gospel of Life) by improving the lives and health of mothers and babies, both born and unborn. This is achieved through new initiatives of service, training, research, and advocacy, which are designed to reduce the tragic levels of abortion world-wide, and maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality in developing countries. This paper describes the history of MCI's formation, how it developed and applied a model of comprehensive rural maternity care for developing countries, and numerous other activities upholding the dignity of life and providing advocacy for women and their children. These early efforts, however, were primarily a response to the needs of the colonists as well as recognition that the poor who were sick required care in these regions. It can be argued that medical missions developed during the twentieth century as a response to the outreach of Protestants as well as the exposure of physicians to the needs in mission territories, and that their advancement and success impacted the attitudes of the popes and bishops of the twentieth century. This article examines several individuals and organizations who have contributed to the development of medical missions in Africa in modern times and trace the approach of the Church toward medical missions by exploring missionary religious orders, especially women's religious orders, and papal and council documents. It primarily considers the role of medical missions in areas that had only a limited Catholic presence prior to nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and where Catholic health care and the local Catholic Church essentially developed together, and considers ways in which the growth of medical missions and the thinking of the Church developed together.</p>","PeriodicalId":505854,"journal":{"name":"The Linacre Quarterly","volume":"88 4","pages":"381-390"},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2021-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1177/00243639211024578","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"39636075","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Morris, a leader in surgical education and a general surgeon at the University of Pennsylvania, and Dr. Alan Herbst, a current third-year Penn general surgery resident. At the time, Dr. Morris, raised in a Reform Jewish household, had been participating in an RCIA Program to convert to Catholicism. The mission of providing surgery to uninsured patients, primarily undocumented individuals, by helping them obtain insurance and see Penn providers was seen by Dr. Morris as a form of Catholic charity, which he has continued to remain dedicated to as his faith in Jesus Christ has deepened. Dr. Herbst, now Associate Director of Clinics for the CSH, recalls working with Dr. Morris as a sub-intern during his conversion, beginning with passion and a neon poster board inviting people to \"See the Surgeon.\" Since that time, the CSH has grown from an organization with 10 volunteers, called \"personal patient navigators,\" who provide insurance support and advocacy at every step of the perioperative continuum, to one with over 50, who have now seen 156 patients and assisted in providing 49 needed procedures. Much of this growth has been brought about through the dedication and vision of Dr. Matthew Goldshore, the Deputy Director of the CSH and a fifth-year Penn general surgery resident, as well as Dr. Carrie Z. Morales, Associate Deputy Director of the CSH and a recent Perelman School of Medicine graduate. Through their leadership, and the talent and commitment of other members of the CSH board, overseen by Director Dr. Morris, the CSH now has policy and research divisions, a surgical equity curriculum, and continues to develop new ways of providing better care.</p>","PeriodicalId":505854,"journal":{"name":"The Linacre Quarterly","volume":"88 4","pages":"409-415"},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2021-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8689508/pdf/10.1177_00243639211037931.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"39636079","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
