One of the key enhancements currently being done relates to the support for multicast/broadcast, or point-to-multipoint (PTM) transmissions, with a key focus on enhanced reliability. These new features are targeting a wide variety of use cases ranging from network-to-vehicle communication to immersive multimedia content delivery. In this work, we present some of the key physical layer procedures and enhancements that were standardized to support the group scheduling of users for multicast traffic with near-unicast level of reliability, as well as support for idle/inactive users to receive broadcast traffic. We also present some performance results, which validate the need to support NACK-only HARQ feedback for multicast which provides significantly improved radio resource efficiencies for uplink feedback, with comparable performance as currently defined ACK/NACK feedback.","PeriodicalId":505795,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Communications Standards Magazine","volume":"47 13","pages":"44-51"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140279879","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, while the demand for new AR applications is rapidly increasing, fundamental best practices and frameworks for the industrial AR sector are still scarce or in their infancy stage. This article addresses this gap by proposing a framework for the design and efficient implementation of AR applications with multiple models and variants. The proposed framework is built around a development process that describes the different steps for the design of a model-based AR application and its implementation with Unity and Vuforia Model Targets; and a multi-layer orchestration model that describes the different interactions between a user and a server layers. The proposed framework has been successfully implemented, and its performance analyzed using both quantitative and qualitative evaluation based on the Brooke's System Usability Scale.","PeriodicalId":505795,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Communications Standards Magazine","volume":"25 22","pages":"4-11"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140277291","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The integrated network control architectural functions support the design and orchestration of end-to-end network services over TN and NTN segments. This system is capable of performance monitoring and resource control of both TN and NTN segments to ensure that performance-guaranteed, high-quality network services can be provided despite fluctuations in workloads and network conditions. This integrated network control architecture promotes interoperability among the control planes of TN and NTN segments, even when they are managed by different organizations.","PeriodicalId":505795,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Communications Standards Magazine","volume":"331 ","pages":"12-19"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140275450","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For example, urban air mobility, one of the driving use cases of AAM, employs electrical vertical takeoff and landing aircraft to offer efficient and on-demand air transportation for goods as well as human passengers. Key stakeholders, such as original equipment manufacturers, prospective AAM operators and communications service providers are exploring suitable technologies to meet various service, safety, and sustainability requirements. In this article, we discuss the most important AAM use cases and associated requirements from a cellular connectivity perspective and summarize the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standardization activities addressing these requirements. While previous works have investigated the role of cellular connectivity for command and control of uncrewed aerial vehicles, other types of AAM vehicles, such as flying buses or flying taxis likely impose more demanding requirements due to higher flying altitudes and demands for mobile broadband services for crew members and passengers. Therefore, we evaluate the performance of beamforming alternatives that are applicable for providing cellular connectivity in AAM scenarios. The results show the benefits of 3GPP standardized and to-be-standardized features, such as codebook-based beamforming, multi-user multiple-input multiple-output systems, and user equipment directional antennas in cellular networks with mixed terrestrial and aerial users.","PeriodicalId":505795,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Communications Standards Magazine","volume":"62 ","pages":"65-71"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140276012","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the growing interest in WiFi sensing, Task Group IEEE 802.11bf (TGbf) was formed to develop an amendment to the IEEE 802.11 standard that will enhance its ability to support WiFi sensing and applications. In this article, we identify and describe the main definitions and features of the IEEE 802.11bf amendment as defined in its D0.5 draft. Our focus is on the Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) sensing procedure, which supports bistatic and multistatic WiFi sensing in license-exempt frequency bands below 7 GHz. We also present an overview of basic sensing principles, and provide a detailed discussion of features defined in the IEEE 802.11bf amendment that enhance client-based WiFi sensing.","PeriodicalId":505795,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Communications Standards Magazine","volume":"133 1","pages":"58-64"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140271163","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The major challenges include the reliance on global positioning system (GPS), whose signals are not received well in some locations, and the inferior user experience caused by the lack of information about unknown surroundings. This article describes the design and development of a markerless augmented reality-based pedestrian navigation system that can handle navigation even in the absence of GPS signals. It improves the user experience by providing a novel landmark recognition feature, which allows users to identify nearby buildings or streets during navigation. To mitigate the absence of GPS signals, a novel user localization method utilizing a step count-based distance estimator is proposed. The experimental results show the location accuracy of 2.3 meters on average and the increase in step count detection accuracy of nearly 0.5% in comparison with existing technologies available in smartwatches, and an average latency of 74 milliseconds in system response in an urban environment. The proposed solution can be used as a mobile application on smartphones and has the potential to contribute to the smart city-related standardization activities of ITU-T Study Group 16.","PeriodicalId":505795,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Communications Standards Magazine","volume":"283 ","pages":"20-26"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140278147","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
