However, limited studies exist on the association between serum Klotho and mortality in patients with CVD.We collected data from CVD patients in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning 2007 to 2016. We linked NHANES data with the National Death Index to determine the survival status of participants. Univariate and multivariable Cox regression models were used to investigate the relationship between serum Klotho levels and mortality in CVD patients. The relationship between serum Klotho quartiles and mortality in CVD patients was visualized using Kaplan-Meier (KM) curves and restricted cubic spine. Finally, subgroup analyses were used to examine the association between serum Klotho and all-cause mortality in different populations.1905 patients with CVD were finally enrolled in our study with a mean follow-up of 7.1 years. The average age of the participants was 63.4 years, with 58.40% being male. KM showed that lower Klotho levels were associated with lower survival rates. After adjusting for potential confounders, patients with higher serum Klotho levels had lower all-cause mortality (Q1: 1.00, Q2: 0.58 (0.42–0.80), Q3: 0.69 (0.47–1.01), and Q4:0.64 (0.45–0.92). However, the relationship between serum Klotho levels and cardiovascular mortality was not statistically significant. Dose-response analysis shows a U-shaped relationship between serum Klotho levels and all-cause mortality in patients with CVD (P nonlinear=0.002). Subgroup analysis indicated that participants with a history of hypertension had a higher risk of all-cause mortality in serum Klotho Q4 compared to Q1 (P trend <0.05).The relationship between serum Klotho levels and all-cause mortality in CVD patients exhibits a U-shaped association. The underlying mechanisms of this association need further investigation.","PeriodicalId":505784,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Endocrinology","volume":"4 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141347378","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Infants exposed in utero to gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) are more likely to develop obesity. The objective of this cross-sectional study is to compare the profile of eCBome mediators in milk of women with gestational diabetes (GDM+) and without (GDM-) and to assess the association with offspring growth. The hypothesis is that the eCBome of GDM+ human milk is altered and associated with a difference in infant growth.Circulating eCBome mediators were measured by LC-MS/MS in human milk obtained at 2 months postpartum from GDM+ (n=24) and GDM- (n=29) women. Infant weight and height at 2 months were obtained from the child health record. Z-scores were calculated.Circulating Npalmitoylethanolamine (PEA) was higher in human milk of GDM+ women than in GDM- women (4.9 ± 3.2 vs. 3.3 ± 1.7, p=0.04). Higher levels were also found for several 2monoacyl-glycerols (2-MAGs) (p<0.05). The levels of NAEs (β=-4.6, p=0.04) and especially non-omega-3 NAEs (B=-5.6, p=0.004) in human milk were negatively correlated with weight-for-age z-score of GDM+ offspring.The profile of eCBome mediators in human milk at 2 months postpartum was different in GDM+ compared to GDM- women and was associated with GDM+ offspring growth at 2 months.ClinicalTrials.gov, identifier (NCT04263675 and NCT02872402).","PeriodicalId":505784,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Endocrinology","volume":"29 12","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141345463","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Inclusion criteria comprised subjects aged 6–19 years with complete data on both SII and sex hormones. We employed weighted multiple regression analysis and subgroup analytical methods to independently estimate the relationship between SII and sex hormones.In this study, a total of 3767 participants were included, with an average age of 12.32 ± 3.95 years. Males constituted 50.54%, and females 49.46%. Among males, a statistically significant negative correlation emerged between SII and sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG). Similarly, in the female population, SII exhibited a statistically significant negative correlation with total testosterone (TT), SHBG, and the Ratio of TT to estradiol, while maintaining a positive correlation with free androgen index (FAI). Subgroup analysis underscored variances in the association between sex hormones and SII within cohorts distinguished by pubertal status or different body mass index (BMI). In addition, the relationship between SII and estradiol exhibited nonlinearity. Employing a two-segment linear regression model, we identified an inverted U-shaped association between SII and estradiol, with an inflection point of 748.09 (1000cell/ml).Our findings suggest that SII may be an independent risk factor for changes in sex hormones in both male and female children and adolescents. More prospective and experimental studies should be conducted to validate our results and elucidate the underlying molecular pathways.","PeriodicalId":505784,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Endocrinology","volume":"6 8","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141346378","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, it is still unclear whether the DKD risk continues to increase linearly with the elevation of TyG index. This study aimed to thoroughly investigated the intrinsic relationship between TyG index and DKD risk in type 2 diabetes (T2D).This cross-sectional study included 933 patients with T2D in China, who were categorized into DKD and non-DKD groups and stratified by TyG index levels. Logistic regression analysis identified the independent risk factors for DKD. The association between DKD risk and TyG index was evaluated using the restricted cubic spline (RCS) curves analysis. The R package ‘CatPredi’ was utilized to determine the optimal cut-off point for the relationship between DKD risk and TyG index, followed by threshold effect analysis.The prevalence of DKD was 33.01%. After adjusting for confounding factors, TyG index was identified as a prominent clinical risk factor for DKD, showing the highest odds ratio (OR 1.57 (1.26 - 1.94), P<0.001). RCS analysis revealed a non-linear relationship with a threshold interval effect between the TyG index and DKD risk. When TyG index ≤ 9.35, DKD risk plateaued at a low level; however, when TyG index > 9.35, DKD risk increased gradually with rising TyG index. Among patients with TyG index > 9.35, each 1-unit increase was associated with a 1.94-fold increased DKD risk (OR=1.94 (1.10 - 3.43), P=0.022).The DKD risk presented a threshold effect with the increase of TyG index, initially stable at a low level, and then gradually rising when the TyG index is above 9.35.","PeriodicalId":505784,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Endocrinology","volume":"52 21","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141346874","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Data on gender, age, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, etc. were collected. After 3 years of follow-up, subjects were divided into a diabetes group and a non-diabetes group. Baseline data between the two groups were compared. A prediction model based on logistic regression was established with nomogram drawn. The calibration was also depicted.Comparison between diabetes group and non-diabetes group: Differences in 24 indicators including gender, age, history of hypertension, fatty liver, BMI, waist circumference, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, HbA1c, etc. were statistically significant between the two groups (P<0.05). Differences in smoking, creatinine and platelet count were not statistically significant between the two groups (P>0.05). Logistic regression analysis showed that ageing, elevated BMI, male gender, high fasting blood glucose, increased LDL-C, fatty liver, liver dysfunction were risk factors for progression from PreDM to diabetes within 3 years (P<0.05), while HDL-C was a protective factor (P<0.05). The derived formula was: In(p/1-p)=0.181×age (40-54 years old)/0.973×age (55-74 years old)/1.868×age (≥75 years old)-0.192×gender (male)+0.151×blood glucose-0.538×BMI (24-28)-0.538×BMI (≥28)-0.109×HDL-C+0.021×LDL-C+0.365×fatty liver (yes)+0.444×liver dysfunction (yes)-10.038. The AUC of the model for predicting progression from PreDM to diabetes within 3 years was 0.787, indicating good predictive ability of the model.The risk prediction model for developing diabetes within 3 years in patients with PreDM constructed based on 8 influencing factors including age, BMI, gender, fasting blood glucose, LDL-C, HDL-C, fatty liver and liver dysfunction showed good discrimination and calibration.","PeriodicalId":505784,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Endocrinology","volume":"32 23","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141346241","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Six different locations from each vertebra of L1-L5 were selected as regions of interest: the anterior, middle and posterior parts of the upper and lower slices of the vertebrae. HU values were measured for the six regions of interest, followed by statistical analysis.The HU values of vertebrae showed a decreasing trend from young patients to elderly patients in Group 1 to Group 5. There was no significant difference in HU values among different vertebrae in the same age group. In all age groups, the HU values of the anterior and posterior part of the vertebral body were significantly different from L1 to L3, with the anterior part of the vertebral body having lower HU values than the posterior part. The HU values of the anterior and posterior part of the vertebral body of L4 and L5 were statistically significant only in Group 5 and Group 6, and the HU values of the anterior part of the vertebral body were lower than those of the posterior part. The HU values of posterior part of L4 and L5 in Group6 were higher than those in Group5.Bone mineral density in the lumbar vertebrae is not uniformly distributed, potentially attributed to varying stress stimuli. However, a growing number of researches have questioned this especially for the oldest old. The current study was to assess the association between total cholesterol and all-cause mortality in a group of people aged 85 years old and over.We selected 903 Chinese old participants who aged ≥85 years from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey(CLHLS) at baseline in 2012. The participants were followed up until death or until December 31, 2014. The outcome was all-cause mortality. The univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were used to estimate risk levels of all-cause mortality. We stratified the participants into three groups (<3.40, 3.40–4.39, ≥4.39 mmol/L) based on the restricted cubic splines methods. The survival probability according to total cholesterol category was calculated using the Kaplan-Meier curves, and the log-rank test was performed to analyze differences between the groups.During the follow-up of three years, 282 participants died, 497 survived and 124 lost to follow-up. There was significant relationship between the total cholesterol and lower risk of all-cause mortality in the multivariable Cox regression analysis (HR=0.88, 95% CI: 0.78–1.00). Based on the restricted cubic splines methods, the total cholesterol was converted from a continuous variable to a categorical variable. The populations were divided into three groups (<3.40, 3.40–4.39, ≥4.39 mmol/L) according to the total cholesterol categorized by cutoff values. Compared to the total cholesterol level of <3.40 mmol/L, populations in the total cholesterol level of 3.40–4.39 mmol/L (HR = 0.72, 95% CI: 0.53–0.97) and ≥4.39 mmol/L (HR = 0.71, 95% CI: 0.52–0.96) groups had lower all-cause mortality in multivariate Cox regression analysis and higher survival probability in survival analysis. When two groups were divided, similar results were found among the populations in the total cholesterol level of ≥3.40 mmol/L compared to the populations in the total cholesterol level of <3.40 mmol/L groups.In oldest old aged 85 and older, serum total cholesterol levels are inversely associated with all-cause mortality. This study suggested that total cholesterol should be maintained to acceptable levels (≥ 3.40 mmol/L) in oldest old to achieve longevity.","PeriodicalId":505784,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Endocrinology","volume":"32 11","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141346089","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is difficult to believe that Apos play a role in psychogenic ED. To address these issues, our study explored the causal relationship between lipoproteins and ED using Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis and differentiate between organic and psychogenic ED through the use of nocturnal penile tumescence and rigidity (NPTR) monitoring. Multivariate MR analysis revealed significant causal associations between high-density lipoprotein (HDL), Apo A1, and Apo B/A1 with ED (OR and 95% CI were 0.33 (0.14-0.78), 3.58 (1.52-8.43), and 0.30 (0.13-0.66)). we conducted statistical and analytical analyses on the data of 212 patients using multivariate analyses and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Patients with organic ED had significantly lower levels of HDL, Apo A1 and Apo A1/B, whereas patients with organic ED had considerably higher levels of Apo B and low-density lipoprotein (LDL). The diagnostic value of Apos in predicting the risk of organic ED was evaluated using ROC curves. The results indicated that Apo A1 and Apo A1/B demonstrated good predictive value. HDL, Apo A1, and Apo A1/B have been identified as risk factors for ED in our study. Furthermore, our research highlights the significance of Apo A1 and Apo A1/Apo B in the development of organic ED and suggests their potential use as indicators to assess the risks associated with organic ED.","PeriodicalId":505784,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Endocrinology","volume":"90 7","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141347742","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cumulative sum (CUSUM) charts were plotted to assess LCs for all consecutive procedures and in relation to basal nodule size. In details, Group 1 (G1): 57 patients with small nodules (<10 ml); Group 2 (G2): 87 patients with intermediate nodules (10 – 25 ml); Group 3 (G3): 35 patients with large size (> 25 ml).LC of all 179 procedures showed 3 phases: initial learning (1–39 procedures); consolidation (40–145 procedures); and experienced period (146–179 procedures). LC of G3 did not detect operator proficiency.Specific LCs exist concerning the basal size of the nodule treated with RFA. In nodules with baseline volume > 25 ml suboptimal VRR has to be expected. Previously achieved experience on small-intermediate nodules does not seem to provide advantages in terms of higher VRR in the treatment of large nodules. Other potential and non-modifiable factors likely play a key role in the final volume reduction independently from the increased skill of the operator.","PeriodicalId":505784,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Endocrinology","volume":"16 8","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141354922","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
