Based on a theoretical analysis of the obtained data and a comparative study of secondary data obtained in earlier sociological studies, the dynamic image of the main characteristics of the national identity of modern Armenians is constructed. The main gender, age and urban differences in the national self-identification of the population of Armenia are provided. Sociological analysis of the self-perception of Armenians in relation to other ethnic groups of a large historical region is given. The outlines of social distance within the Armenian ethnos between various groups of its diaspora are considered in detail. Some of the sociological data obtained is compared to the results of recent genetic studies of the Armenian ethnos.","PeriodicalId":504830,"journal":{"name":"Sociological Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139166618","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In part one of the article we sought to formulate the sociological concept of uncertainty and trace its evolution depending on the stage of social development. Uncertainty in the postindustrial period is defined as a plethora of processes and phenomena associated with increasingly autonomous living, susceptibility to an environment that’s constantly changing, as well as a multitude of potential alternative solutions and actions. These conditions foster massive opportunities for people to unlock their creative potential, the downside being increased anxiety and insecurity, social isolation and inequality. The second part of the article focuses on studying such a phenomenon as the competence of modern-day workers, given the current context of socio-economic uncertainty. Although competence has developed based on the industrial model of professional training, it is currently transitioning to the next stage of its evolution. With modern capitalism undergoing rejuvenation, competence is sort of individualizing, becoming defined by one’s cultural capital, personality traits and biography, turning out to be unique and possessing internal complexity and flexibility. This new sort of competence is welcome in places where the main criteria are high level of qualification and up to date knowledge, that contribute to developing the most cutting edge and creative sectors of the economy, new spaces and forms of work activity. When it comes to non-ideal workers, for them competence embodies a rational strategy of situational adaptation of their skills and abilities to the current labor market. Certain new educational and political initiatives are developing in that same general direction, with them aiming to reproduce “aptitude for employment” among the vast majority of the working population. But at the same time labor markets and organizations are starting to function as “machines that reproduce inequality”. Despite the fact that modern competence is being engulfed by an entire industry of intermediaries, achieving it is proving to be a difficult task for modern society.","PeriodicalId":504830,"journal":{"name":"Sociological Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139167893","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is considered to be a complex phenomenon which is potentially associated with emotional dilemmas. Emotions of volunteers are crucial for their activity. However, their scientific investigation is lacking, especially when it comes to the methodological aspect. This article presents the results of the methodological development of quantitative indicators of the emotional dimension of volunteering. Using the example of an online survey of 274 social, environmental, event, sports, animal welfare and public safety volunteers, the obtained indicators are tested by searching for a connection with the factors of volunteers’ emotions. As part of our methodology, we have developed new emotional indicators of volunteer activity. Based on the results of the study, we proposed such indicators as valence index, emotional burnout, emotional nature and emotional intelligence. The valence index considers two types (two valences) of volunteers’ emotions — positive and negative. Emotional burnout is expressed as a factor analysis model — the causes of burnout. Emotional intelligence is presented as a summary indicator of emotional processes — for instance, exchange, control, etc. The nature of emotions is represented by interval semantic differentials when building a cluster analysis model. By testing the obtained methods, it turns out that formal and informal volunteers have equally high emotional intelligence and are equally susceptible to burnout. The lowest values of the valence index are found among event volunteers, the highest — among public safety volunteers. With age, the chances of burning out decrease with the presence of constant joy and fun, increase due to excessive pity, and decrease due to compassion fatigue. Compared to men, women are more prone to experiencing emotions: both positive and negative, that is, they have a higher valence index and emotional intelligence.","PeriodicalId":504830,"journal":{"name":"Sociological Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139166114","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Frank, the results of which began to be published in the previous issue. This article deals with the concept of social philosophy of S.L. Frank, set forth in his work “The Spiritual Foundations of Society”. The main ideas of his concept are compared to the views of G. Simmel, E. Husserl, M. Scheler. The author comes to the conclusion that Frank’s socio-philosophical doctrine is based on the idea of a “god-like” (“theomorphic”) person, who gradually overcomes his empirical, innate-animal nature in society and history and comes into his own as a person in pursuit of God — the highest foundation of the universe. The social and spiritual being merge, according to Frank, into one ontological unity, which is founded in the being of man — in the history of his society as a “phenomenology of the spirit” and “the dramatic fate of God in the heart of man”, as well as in his “living knowledge” about himself as a “medium”, “conduit” of higher principles and values. The concept of Frank’s social philosophy was formed, according to the author, under the influence of G. Simmel’s “philosophical sociology”, E. Husserl’s transcendental phenomenology, and his philosophical anthropology is in many ways close to Scheler’s early philosophical ideas.","PeriodicalId":504830,"journal":{"name":"Sociological Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139167449","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The history of the formation and decay of this extremely interesting applied discipline is traced using the example of Biysk city, one of the leading centers of the Soviet defense industry in the 1960’s – 1980’s. The article is based on the personal memories of Sergey Orlov and Lyudmila Mrachkovskaya, who in the 1970’s and 1980’s worked as factory sociologists at such large enterprises as the Research and Production Association “Altai”, the Biysk Chemical Combine, and the Biysk Oleum Plant. Publications of the corporate newspaper of the Biysk Oleum Plant “Za progress” (“For Progress”) have been introduced into scientific circulation as a new source of information about the work of factory sociologists, and this helps in understanding problems that were of concern for the management of Soviet enterprises. In conclusion, several hypotheses are put forward to indicate the horizon for further research on the topic of factory sociology.","PeriodicalId":504830,"journal":{"name":"Sociological Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139167179","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such an approach towards studying scientific mentoring is justified by sociological concepts of everyday life, but their key provisions require adaptation to the problems of scientific mentoring. The idea of science as the everyday life world of university researchers is revealed through a micro-sociological perspective. The interaction of a scientific mentor and a mentee student is interpreted as an element of their life world and is examined through this interaction manifesting in everyday academic activities. The purpose of the article is to examine the integrity, structure (routine actions, the objective world, language, space and time, rituals, signs and symbols, informal traditions) and functionality of everyday practices of scientific mentoring through the prism of sociological concepts of everyday life. A thesis is substantiated that everyday practices of interaction between a scientific mentor and mentee are a way of building and intergenerational translation of the meaning of research work and choice of academic profession.","PeriodicalId":504830,"journal":{"name":"Sociological Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139167874","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
