Despite successful governance arrangements that effectively regulated access to fish stocks for many generations, evidence shows that these arrangements are not working as new entrants continue to gain access and overexploit remaining fish stocks. Managing new entrants is a crucial factor in achieving sustainable use. Our objective was to gain an understanding of fisheries governance on the Kafue floodplain fishery, particularly in Shimungalu and Nyimba fishing villages, where different levels of government support for co-management structures produced different outcomes. Our research approach was qualitative, by utilising the snowball sampling technique and incorporating interviews and documentary analysis. Our aim was to investigate discrepancies in the efficacy of resource access and utilisation in the two fishing camps, and to offer recommendations on how governance systems for the fishery could be refined to improve their efficacy. This comparative analysis of the two fishing communities, which share numerous characteristics with various small-scale fisheries in Africa, provides an opportunity to understand how polycentric governance offers a solution by enabling other organisations to fill capacity gaps faced by relevant authorities. We combined a zig-zag line transect survey of buoys, a fisheries enforcement survey and a drone survey to estimate recreational effort in the open-access trap fishery for signal crayfish (<i>Pacifastacus leniusculus</i>) in the sixth largest lake in Europe, Lake Vättern, Sweden. Using supporting variables such as size of nearby ports and bathymetry, our model-assisted estimate of total effort was 6400 (±4300 CI) buoys during the three-weekend season. Using the frequency of buoys to traps as a constant, the total number of crayfish traps was estimated to be 25,500 (±17,000 CI). However, information about the optimal spatial scale is still unclear for assessment of transit fisheries, such as elver fisheries of the American eel <i>Anguilla rostrata</i>. We applied a generalized depletion model to assess catch and effort data from three nearby rivers (within 50 km) to test the hypothesis that modeling on pooled and separate data from nearby rivers would give similar estimates of abundance and exploitation rate. Overall, pooling data from rivers within 50 km did not result in large differences (&lt;20% in relative difference) in estimates of abundance and exploitation rate with close mean abundance estimates and similar temporal trends in abundance, exploitation rate, and relative escapement. Pooling nearby river systems can greatly reduce modeling effort, at the cost of ignoring fine-scale variability in elver recruitment and having coarser spatial scale for the management. We evaluated the influence of relative abundance of fish functional groups and watershed characteristics on the slope of the CSS or ecological efficiency. Both ecological efficiency and capacity were strongly influenced by relative abundance of fish functional groups and the degree of water level variation. Steeper slopes indicated overfished gamefish populations, whereas flatter slopes indicated systems dominated by undesirable invasive large-bodied low trophic position fish. We compared the performance of hook removal tools and bare hands with four hook types on freshwater <i>Lepomid</i> sunfish. Dehooking performance was assessed using hook removal time, unhooking difficulty, degree of tissue damage at the hooking location, and immediate reflex impairment. Unhooking difficulty was positively related to hooking depth. Unhooking difficulty was lowest for hemostats and the mechanical dehooking device; however, the mechanical dehooking device caused the largest tearing of mouth tissue. Unhooking difficulty was the main driver for hook removal time, tissue tear length, and overall reflex impairment. Hooks that were harder to remove caused higher reflex impairment. Hook type had little influence on the effectiveness of hook removal tools, although circle hooks were more difficult to remove and caused greater injury when using tools. Although use of hook removal tools can be beneficial for fish that are released, more research is needed on more species targeted by recreational anglers, and more hook removal tools. Dynamic factor analysis of temporal changes in species CPUE was used to quantify relationships to environmental variables (sea surface temperature, chlorophyll-a, sea surface level, and river discharge) during 2006–2022. We found that the Guilan subarea had the lowest relative abundance and differed from all other subareas. Fish abundance was highest in October and November, particularly in Mazandaran and Golestan coastal waters. Relative fish abundance declined significantly over time. <i>Acipenser persicus</i> was the most abundant species, followed by <i>Aciperser gueldenstaedtii</i>, <i>Aciperser stellatus</i>, <i>Aciperser nudiventris</i>, and <i>Huso huso</i>. The annual number of fingerlings released decreased during 2000–2021. Over the years, environmental variables such as sea surface level, sea surface temperature, and chlorophyll-a showed different trends, with sea surface temperature generally increasing, chlorophyll-a generally decreasing, sea surface level decreasing nearly linearly, and river discharge varying erratically without a trend in the southern Caspian Sea during 2006–2022. The relative abundance of all species decreased and was significantly related to sea surface level. Fish abundance was forecasted to decline by 2025, as sea surface temperature increases and sea surface level decreases. We used fish landings to evaluate changes in composition of fish landings in rivers of the Central Amazon, from a discontinuous historical 28-year series of landings from different data collection systems in main ports of the city of Manaus, the largest consumer market in the region. Annual mean trophic level (MTL), fishing-in-balance index (FiB), and mean landed size (MSL) were estimated. MTL did not decline, FiB was positive in most years, and MSL declined. Relative catches of certain fish species were replaced by others at a similar trophic level, but mean body size declined over time. Pikeperch (<i>Sander lucioperca</i>) (<i>n</i> = 478; mean length = 42.1 cm; SD = 7.0), bream (<i>Abramis brama</i>) (<i>n</i> = 775; mean length = 31.1 cm; SD = 5.3) and roach (<i>Rutilus rutilus</i>) (<i>n</i> = 939; mean length = 21.4 cm; SD = 2.0) were marked with individual T-anchor tags to investigate movements in Lake Vesijärvi, a large lake situated in southern Finland consisting of several basins and managing by multiple entities. All species moved between basins, but only rarely moved outside tagging areas. The recapture rate of pikeperch was higher than roach and bream. Tagged fish consistently crossed municipality borders and water ownership units, thereby forming shared stocks, which underlined the importance of cooperation in lake restoration and a need to unite fragmented water ownership. Management of fisheries for cyprinid fishes could be more efficient if fishing targeted the most suitable areas without considering restrictions due to fragmented water ownership. Tagging data provided information on which parts of a large lake should be subjected to uniform pikeperch fisheries management. The importance of other species catch varied between different parts of the lake, thereby requiring different fishing regulations. Monitoring and management of coastal rocky fish species is urgently needed in Chile, but knowledge of these species is fragmentary at best. Performance of Baited Remote Underwater Video Stations (BRUVS) for assessing rocky fish assemblages was evaluated in south-central Chile. Seven medium- to large-sized exploited species dominated fish assemblages in the survey area, including five small cryptic rocky reef fishes, one agnathan and a catshark species. These seven species represented 78% of the species targeted by commercial fishing in the survey area. Furthermore, this tool provided new information on behaviour of rocky fish species.
