Objectives: To compare the endurance of the LPHC and diaphragm contractility in females with patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) and a healthy control group. Methods: Fifty-six females, including twenty-eight diagnosed with patellofemoral pain syndrome and twenty-eight healthy females matched as controls (aged 15 - 45), were invited to participate in this case-control study. Endurance scores of trunk extensor, flexor, and lateral flexor muscles, endurance ratios, and the percentage of diaphragm muscle contractility using the ultrasonography method were compared between the two groups. Results: The endurance time of trunk flexors and right and left lateral muscle groups in the PFPS group significantly differed compared to the control group (P < 0.05). Diaphragm contractility in both the right (Mean ± SD: 21.82 ± 3.61; P < 0.001) and left (Mean ± SD: 22.92 ± 2.99; P = 0.007) sides was significantly lower in the PFPS group compared to the control group. Conclusions: Lumbo-Pelvic-Hip Complex stability and diaphragm respiratory and postural function contractility were impaired in females with PFPS.","PeriodicalId":504330,"journal":{"name":"Middle East Journal of Rehabilitation and Health Studies","volume":"19 17","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141272973","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It causes lifelong physical and cognitive impairments. Objectives: This study examined the effects of a group psychoeducational intervention on anxiety, depression, and quality of life in mothers of children with CP. Methods: This quasi-experimental study involved 50 mothers (25 in the intervention group and 25 in the control group) of children with CP aged 2 - 11 years. Mothers in both groups completed the Beck Depression Inventory, Beck Anxiety Inventory, and Short Form-36 health survey before and after the interventions. The intervention group received a 5-session (1 hour per session), weekly psychoeducational program that provided information about CP, stress management techniques, problem-solving skills, and social support. The control group received no intervention during this period. Follow-up assessments were conducted at 2 months post-intervention to evaluate outcomes. Results: Psychoeducation significantly reduced anxiety and depression and improved quality of life compared to the control group (P < 0.001). Also, group × time interactions were significant for all dependent variables (P < 0.001). Conclusions: A brief group psychoeducational intervention effectively decreased anxiety and depression and enhanced the quality of life in mothers of children with cerebral palsy.","PeriodicalId":504330,"journal":{"name":"Middle East Journal of Rehabilitation and Health Studies","volume":"119 37","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141115414","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Evaluating the balance in different degrees of severity of FHP can help design and plan appropriate balance exercises for people with FHP. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the changes in the limits of stability (LOS) in people with mild and moderate-to-severe grades of FHP. Methods: The participants in this study were 70 individuals suffering from FHP, aged between 17 - 45. They were divided into two groups based on their craniovertebral angle: Mild (> 45.5 degrees) and moderate-to-severe (< 45.5 degrees). The LOS test was performed using a posturography device (Neurocom, Equitest, USA). Five indices—movement reaction time (RCT), movement velocity (MVL), endpoint excursion (EPE), maximum excursion (MXE), and directional control (DCL)—were evaluated. Results: Based on the results of the LOS test, RCT, MVL, EPE, MXE, and DCL were significantly different between the mild and moderate-to-severe FHP groups in both anterior and posterior directions (P < 0.05). However, in other directions, no significant difference was observed in these variables based on the LOS test (P > 0.05). Conclusions: It can be concluded that individuals with moderate-to-severe FHP are more likely to have postural control deficits. Therefore, it is necessary to design appropriate targeted interventions to prevent falls in these individuals. Specifically, they should receive balance exercises in dynamic situations.","PeriodicalId":504330,"journal":{"name":"Middle East Journal of Rehabilitation and Health Studies","volume":"48 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141116841","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Objectives: This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and experiences of the physiotherapy community in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) regarding the management of long-term COVID-19. Methods: Conducted as a cross-sectional study utilizing convenient sampling through an online survey, it involved physiotherapists and physiotherapy students throughout the United Arab Emirates, achieving a response rate of 434 (93.13%). Results: Fatigue (76%) and shortness of breath (56.2%) were the most commonly reported symptoms, with the Generic PROMIS (51.6%) and Post-COVID-19 Functional Status Scale (41.7%) being the most utilized outcome tools. Sixty-eight percent of participants felt confident in differentiating between COVID-19 complications and long COVID symptoms, whereas 18.7% were unsure, and 13% admitted difficulty in differentiation. The approaches reported for managing long COVID included graded exercise, symptom-titrated physical activity, and pacing exercise principles (63.21%, 37.79%, and 31.8%, respectively), alongside exercise capacity tests like the 1-minute sit-to-stand and 10MWT (71.9%) for screening and recommending physical activity. A significant majority (87.3%) expressed a desire for more information on long COVID rehabilitation, and 87.8% showed interest in specialized training. However, gaps were identified in screening and prescribing exercise or physical activity for long-term COVID-19 rehabilitation. Conclusions: There is a need for regular updates on long-term COVID science and education, emphasizing the spectrum of long-term COVID symptoms versus emerging complications, and skill training in advanced respiratory physiotherapy care or exercise training specifically for long-term COVID. This will aid in integrating recent clinical practice guidelines more effectively.","PeriodicalId":504330,"journal":{"name":"Middle East Journal of Rehabilitation and Health Studies","volume":"115 16","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140678441","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Morocco, minimizing the morbidity and mortality associated with congenital malformations is a key health policy objective. In the Marrakech-Safi region, the prevalence and etiology of congenital malformations remain unclear. Objectives: This study seeks to ascertain the prevalence of clinically evident congenital malformations and identify the factors contributing to their incidence in the Marrakech-Safi region. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted in the maternity ward of the Mohamed VI University Hospital Center in Marrakech in 2022. An obstetric chart was utilized to gather sociodemographic, obstetrical, maternal, and neonatal data from the target population, including risk factors. The data were analyzed using SPSS 21 software. Results: Out of 17 250 files reviewed, 159 births with malformations were identified, resulting in a prevalence of 0.92% of births. Newborns with multiple malformations constituted 22.64% of all cases, with a prevalence of 2.08/1000 births. Neural tube defects were the most common, with a prevalence of 3.65/1000 births, followed by musculoskeletal defects and digestive tract defects. Chromosomal malformations, specifically trisomy 21, were the fifth most common, with a prevalence of 1.4/1000 births. Facial and urogenital malformations were the least frequent in this study. The occurrence of congenital malformations in this region is influenced by various risk factors, including maternal age, male sex, parity, medical history, and newborn weight at birth. Conclusions: In the Marrakech-Safi region, congenital malformations are influenced by a wide range of risk factors. Identifying these factors is crucial for healthcare providers to enhance surveillance among at-risk populations and develop effective preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic strategies.","PeriodicalId":504330,"journal":{"name":"Middle East Journal of Rehabilitation and Health Studies","volume":"35 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140704796","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Objectives: Given that various strains of COVID-19 impact food security differently, we assessed the food security status of households in Semnan province, Iran, during and after the containment of the omicron variant. Methods: Data from 231 households were gathered using a standard questionnaire that evaluated socioeconomic characteristics, food security based on the U.S. Household Food Security Survey Module, and vulnerability to food insecurity. A quantitative model was utilized to identify factors associated with food insecurity during and post-pandemic. Results: The findings indicated an improvement in household food security following the management of COVID-19, with significant differences observed in food security levels, especially concerning severe food insecurity, during versus after the COVID-19 period. The quantitative model analysis revealed that, with the exception of the head of household's occupation status, personal savings, and the number of educated and employed members within a household, all variables significantly correlated with food security (P < 0.05). Conclusions: These outcomes highlight how the relationship between socioeconomic factors and food security levels may vary depending on the pandemic's timing, environmental conditions, and household resilience, underlining the importance of adaptive policymaking that responds to current circumstances and the evolving links between socioeconomic determinants and food security.","PeriodicalId":504330,"journal":{"name":"Middle East Journal of Rehabilitation and Health Studies","volume":"12 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140706205","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The voluntary response index (VRI) introduces a novel method for analyzing the motor control of voluntary movements via sEMG. This study aimed to assess the reliability of VRI and breakpoint angles (BPA) among professional football players during the Nordic Hamstring test (NHT). Methods: This study included 24 healthy professional football players. Through the use of sEMG, two aspects of VRI [magnitude (MAG) and similarity index (SI)] were evaluated during the NHT. Additionally, BPAs were determined by capturing slow-motion videos of functional tasks. The test-retest reliability across three trials was determined using the intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC). Results: The reliability of the VRI components during the NHT was found to be excellent. The ICC for MAG was 0.9 and 0.81 for the SI. Breakpoint angles exhibited moderate reliability (ICC = 0.65) during a functional task. The SI displayed a lower standard error of measurement (SEM = 0.07). The MAG’s SEM was 0.25, while BPA’s SEM was 17.8. Conclusions: The analysis of the VRI via sEMG showed nearly perfect reliability in professional football players during the NHT, a functional task. Breakpoint angles demonstrated significant reliability. The findings of this study indicate that both VRI and BPA are reliable methods for estimating motor control during dynamic movement tasks in professional athletes.","PeriodicalId":504330,"journal":{"name":"Middle East Journal of Rehabilitation and Health Studies","volume":"65 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140732998","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Low-power lasers have been demonstrated to have beneficial effects, such as pain reduction and increased range of motion, in treating shoulder tendinitis. Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine the impact of high-power lasers on improving the clinical symptoms of individuals with rotator cuff tendinopathy. Methods: This study was a randomized, single-blind clinical trial involving 41 patients who were divided into 2 groups: The intervention group (21 participants) and the control group (20 participants). Both groups received the same physiotherapy treatment. However, the intervention group additionally received high-power laser treatment. Before and after the treatment, all patients completed the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) to assess pain intensity and Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) questionnaire to evaluate shoulder functional activity. Shoulder range of motion was measured using a goniometer. Results: The average scores of both the VAS and DASH questionnaires showed a significant decrease after treatment in both the high-power laser and control groups (P = 0.001). However, the decrease in the intervention group was greater than that in the control group, and this difference was also statistically significant (P = 0.001). Following treatment, both groups exhibited a statistically significant reduction in the painful range of motion of the shoulder joint (P = 0.002). However, the difference between the 2 groups in this regard was not significant (P = 0.20). Conclusions: The combination of high-power laser treatment with conventional physiotherapy appears to have enhanced therapeutic effects. The laser's anti-inflammatory mechanism may have contributed to accelerated pain reduction and improved joint function. However, further studies are necessary to confirm this hypothesis.","PeriodicalId":504330,"journal":{"name":"Middle East Journal of Rehabilitation and Health Studies","volume":"73 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140360246","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Objectives: This study aimed to explore how unilateral casting of either the dominant or non-dominant upper limb affects the maximum three-dimensional mechanical power of the ankle joint during walking. Methods: In this quasi-experimental study, 30 healthy women (average age ± standard deviation: 29.5 ± 3.45 years) participated. They walked under three conditions: Without immobilization, with immobilization of the dominant upper limb, and with immobilization of the non-dominant upper limb, along a path equipped with force plates and cameras. The instantaneous muscle power at the ankle joint in each plane was measured. A repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted to identify significant differences among the three conditions. Results: Significant changes were observed in all parameters of maximum power generation and absorption at the ankle joint across all planes when walking with the dominant and non-dominant upper limbs splinted (P ≤ 0.05). Conclusions: Considering that muscle power is a crucial biomechanical parameter during walking, the observed alterations in this parameter due to upper limb splinting highlight the need for awareness to prevent potential walking difficulties when using upper limb braces.","PeriodicalId":504330,"journal":{"name":"Middle East Journal of Rehabilitation and Health Studies","volume":" 33","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140386173","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this context, exploring the connection between psychological health, cognitive flexibility, brain-behavioral systems, and sensory processing in Iranian immigrants in Canada is becoming an essential research goal. Objectives: The aim of this study was to explore the relationships between psychological health, cognitive flexibility, brain-behavioral systems, and sensory processing among Iranian immigrants in Canada. Methods: A cross-sectional study design was used, gathering data from 400 Iranian students (198 males and 202 females) enrolled at universities in Canada and Iran. We collected participants' demographic details and assessed their psychological health, cognitive flexibility, brain-behavioral systems, and sensory processing through standardized instruments. Psychological health was evaluated using the Beck Anxiety Inventory, cognitive flexibility was measured with the Dennis and Vander Wall Cognitive Flexibility Questionnaire, and sensory processing was appraised via the adolescent/adult sensory profile. The Carver and White behavioral inhibition system (BIS)/behavioral activation system (BAS) scales were utilized to measure brain-behavioral systems. Statistical analyses, including correlation analysis and multivariate regression, were conducted to investigate the relationships among these variables. Results: The correlation analysis revealed significant positive associations between anxiety and low registration (r = 0.283, P < 0.001), sensory sensitivity (r = 0.442, P < 0.001), and sensory avoiding (r = 0.307, P < 0.001) in immigrant students. Anxiety also showed nonsignificant negative correlations with the behavioral activation system-drive (r = -0.042, P = 0.551) and behavioral activation system-reward responsiveness (r = -0.090, P = 0.203). The multivariate regression analysis found that low registration (B = 0.177, P = 0.036), sensory sensitivity (B = 0.336, P < 0.001), and cognitive flexibility (B = 0.119, P = 0.025) significantly predicted anxiety levels in immigrant students. An adjusted R-squared value of 0.191 indicated that these variables together explained 19.1% of the variance in anxiety levels. Conclusions: This study underscores the significant links between sensory processing patterns, cognitive flexibility, brain-behavioral systems, and anxiety among Iranian immigrant students. These findings highlight the need for interventions focusing on teaching cognitive skills strategies and increasing awareness of sensory needs to help reduce anxiety levels in this population.","PeriodicalId":504330,"journal":{"name":"Middle East Journal of Rehabilitation and Health Studies","volume":" 11","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140220090","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
