Because of the strict Iranian regime, girls were not allowed to ride bicycles nor play on the street. Springing forth from the need for having a way to pass time as a little kid, Alavi and her younger brother started taking on do-it-yourself projects in her home storage room, an incarnation of the famous proverb, “Necessity is the mother of invention.” One of these projects was building a four-wheel cart to carry the garbage bin from the kitchen to the street. “We had a big front yard and sending the heavy garbage bin to the street was difficult,” she explained. Alavi added, “Although the cart did not turn well, it was quite exciting to turn our idea into reality and see it in action.”","PeriodicalId":50390,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Industry Applications Magazine","volume":"117 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2023-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138688410","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Between 2011 and 2021, there was a total of 1,201 workplace fatalities involving electricity reported to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), accounting for 6% of all workplace deaths. During this period, 69% of all electrically related fatalities happened in nonelectrically related occupations. Further, there has not been a significant decrease in the number of electrical fatalities since 2011. This article reviews each electrical incident reported to OSHA during this period to find the commonalities in fatal electrical incidents, determine if engineering controls or behavioral changes could have avoided the injury, and propose changes that can be made in the workplace and training to reduce the number of electrically related injuries in the United States.","PeriodicalId":50390,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Industry Applications Magazine","volume":"81 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2023-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140624894","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To satisfy this huge request for batteries, a possible solution, taking into account a circular-economy framework, is given by second-life batteries (SLBs), a new technology that exploits deteriorated batteries from the EV sector for less demanding applications, such as stationary storage. On the one hand, SLBs make it possible to use batteries to their full extent. On the other hand, specific standards for SLBs are still missing and, from an industrial point of view, there are several factors that influence whether this business would be convenient or not. This article presents a possible lifecycle for EV batteries where SLBs are considered with different business strategies, also taking into account the possible SLB applications that can be derived from the reuse of batteries before being recycled. From an economic point of view, an economic assessment is introduced, providing possible parameters that may affect the SLB business either positively or negatively.","PeriodicalId":50390,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Industry Applications Magazine","volume":"70 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2023-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138688516","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
