First, it is local in the sense that it has a limited size and coverage. Second, it can operate independently, although most microgrids are still connected to a larger utility system. Third, it has some intelligence built in, so it can operate reliably under varying conditions of load and generation. Brusso","doi":"10.1109/mias.2023.3338868","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/mias.2023.3338868","url":null,"abstract":"As an electrical engineering undergraduate at the University of Illinois, periodically, I needed to take an R&R weekend to clear my mind from my studies and enjoy some time in nature—he’s “gone fishing.” I would collect my casting rod and reel and a bamboo pole from my parents’ home in Chicago, IL, USA, then head down to the bait shop at Montrose Harbor at Lake Michigan to collect some earthworms. Then, it was off to the fishing pier to try my luck. Rarely did I catch a fish, and if I did, it was quickly removed from the hook and returned to its habitat unharmed. The survey queried a randomly selected group of 6,000 active members. We received 811 responses, a response rate of 13.5%, which is considered fairly high for this type of random member survey. One very positive outcome from the respondents was confirmation that a large majority of IAS members are satisfied with their membership (76.8%) and likely to renew (84.5%).
