Despite the approach adopted by government institutions, academia, and other stakeholders, there are few insights into the status of OH research and innovation, education, governance, and implementation of OH solutions. The Capacitating OH in Eastern and Southern Africa (COHESA) project aims to enhance the capacity of local institutions to bring about optimal solutions to OH challenges. This case report aimed to provide baseline information about the adoption and implementation status of Rwanda’s research and innovation, governance, and education related to the OH approach. An evaluation tool collected baseline information from selected institutions’ representatives in key informant interviews and focus group discussions. Moreover, a review of grey and published literature on One Health in Rwanda was conducted. A wide range of actors, including parastatal institutions, academia, NGOs, and private sectors, are involved in OH activities in Rwanda. Various institutions of higher learning education mainly use extracurricular activities to deliver OH education. However, the University of Global Health Equity has adopted an innovative approach to OH education by integrating OH in the medical curriculum and implementing a graduate degree with an OH concentration. Rwanda is among the few countries with an OH policy that is essential to guide actions and distribute responsibilities among various actors. However, anchoring the unit responsible for OH governance in the prime minister’s office could boost OH institutionalization and facilitate coordination and collaboration among OH stakeholders.\u0000 \u0000 \u0000 © The Authors 2024\u0000

The One Health approach recognizes the interconnectedness of human, animal and environmental health, and that AMR can be spread between different species and environments. The Fleming Fund, a UK Overseas Development Aid program managed by the UK’s Department of Health and Social Care, aims to improve AMR and antimicrobial use (AMU) surveillance data in Africa and Asia by generating, sharing, and using data to improve antimicrobial use and encourage investment in AMR research and development. The Fund awarded grants to several countries, including Kenya, to support national efforts in strengthening their capacity to collect, manage and use data on antimicrobial use and resistance. Six institutions, including the International Livestock Research Institute, University of Nairobi, the Aga Khan University, the Kenya Medical Research Institute, PATH and Washington State University, formed the Fleming Fund consortium in Kenya. Across animal and human health sectors, this consortium supported activities that address the gaps in the surveillance of AMR and its causes including antimicrobial stewardship training, development and dissemination of standard operating procedures for both active and passive AMR surveillance, capacity building of field and laboratory personnel and infrastructure work among other activities. The wide range of data acquired through this program will impact evidence-based policies and programs, enabling consumers and stakeholders to make informed decisions that preserve the effectiveness of antibiotics.\u0000 \u0000 \u0000 © The Authors 2024\u0000

The program focuses on applied field research and advanced health management practices through two independent projects fully funded by the Sustainable Agricultural Development Fund of the Hong Kong Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department: The Poultry Health Assurance Project (PHAP) and the Poultry Health and Production Management Project (PHPM). Specifically, this work established collaborations between academic partners, the Hong Kong Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD), the Chicken Breeders Association, and the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory of City University of Hong Kong (CityU VDL), with the overarching objective of providing veterinary services to 29 chicken farms in Hong Kong SAR.\u0000 In this OHRP-launched program, there are two projects (Project I and Project II): the first one, named Poultry Health Assurance Project (PHAP), was conducted from 2019 to 2022, and the second one, named Poultry Health and Production Management Project from 2022 to 2024. Numerous innovative and sustainable studies and activities, such as implementing intelligent farming practices, have already been conducted. For instance, a mobile application called “Broiler Record APP” has been developed to facilitate data collection data and monitor farm production. Environmental data sensors have been installed in poultry farms to efficiently track and maintain stable temperature and humidity. Moreover, OHRP has introduced free-to-use newsletters and continuing education seminars called the Poultry News-Technology Promotion Information Plan, which aims to introduce farmers to the latest technology, address the need for ongoing education for farm staff, and offer training courses for individuals interested in pursuing a career in the poultry industry. In addition, value chain mapping activities are also conducted to assess the impact of COVID-19 on the poultry value chain in collaboration between researchers from OHRP, City University of Hong Kong (CityU), and the Royal Veterinary College (RVC), United Kingdom. With the ambition of establishing a “Hong Kong Chicken Quality” brand through the prudent use of antibiotics, both projects also encompass veterinary clinical activities conducted by HK-registered veterinarians, such as veterinarian prescriptions and veterinary care.\u0000 \u0000 \u0000 © 2024 Centre for Applied One Health Research and Policy Advice (OHRP), City University of Hong Kong, All Rights Reserved. Thus far, practical initiatives often focus on a few narrow sectors at a time. We are lacking knowledge on the efficacy of broader interorganizational collaborations at the city or regional level.\u0000 Nature Step to Health – Lahti Regional Health and Environment Programme 2022–2032 in Finland is a planetary health program. It provides a practical example of regional collaboration between various organizations such as public healthcare, municipalities, and educational and research organizations in order to achieve tangible results in striving for more sustainable futures. The program facilitates collaboration and communicates to actors that can initiate projects and implement planetary health in their everyday work. This case study aims to find out how the program has succeeded in coordinating initiatives that could support different organizations to enhance sustainability and planetary health.\u0000 We conducted six semi-structured interviews about the experiences of practical actors participating in projects that relate to Nature Step to Health. The goal was to find out strengths as well as potential challenges or barriers in implementing planetary health in their organizations. The participants were generally positive about the measures, collaboration, and networking. The organization’s comprehensive approach to health promotion was considered a strength. Challenges raised by the participants were related to the difficulty to uptake the concept of combining health and sustainability in their work. There were also shortcomings in, for example, communication of the project, and lack of time and expertise.\u0000 \u0000 \u0000 © The Authors 2024\u0000

As a result, it hinders the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals 3 (Good Health and Wellbeing), 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and 13 (Climate Change). In order to improve human and (agro-)ecosystem health, One Health approaches for better air quality must account for local knowledge, cultural practices and priorities. People with lower socio-economic status often have limited awareness of air pollution yet are affected most through personal exposure and increased food prices. This case trialled a new, co-created transdisciplinary approach to air pollution awareness raising in the Mukuru community in Nairobi, Kenya. The pilot study used interviews, storytelling, participatory mapping, theatre, playful activities and music with the aim of discovering affected communities’ perceptions of air pollution, increasing understanding and empowering people to demand that policy makers develop and implement effective, inclusive air pollution abatement policies.\u0000 \u0000 \u0000 © The Authors 2024\u0000

This case report presents the rare confirmation of feline rabies in July 2022 in Ebonyi State, South Eastern Nigeria. Direct Fluorescent Antibody Test and Reverse-Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction confirmed that the cat was infected with rabies a few weeks after it was obtained by the owner. The two cat-scratched victims (owner and another in-contact person) opted for unorthodox management with a local traditional healer without seeking conventional medical care. Further outbreak investigations into the incidents involved multiple observational visits and interviews with key informants revealed the existence of risk factors that could have facilitated the transmission of the disease. A one-health approach, which considers the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health, is favourable to achieve sustainable rabies control and was used in outbreak response. Implementing active rabies surveillance, raising awareness about dog and cat vaccination, and discouraging unorthodox management is essential to control rabies within the community. Additionally, improving access to post-exposure prophylaxis is crucial in preventing rabies-related fatalities and achieving zero human rabies deaths by 2030.\u0000 \u0000 \u0000 © The Authors 2024\u0000
