We aimed to compare the onset times of sensory block with equipotential 0.25% bupivacaine and 0.5% bupivacaine. Methods: This prospective double-blinded randomized controlled study was conducted on 60 patients, aged > 18 years, with ASA physical status I–III, and scheduled for upper extremity surgery with infraclavicular brachial plexus block. The participants were randomized into two equal groups; group I in which ICB performed with 0.25%, 20 mL bupivacaine and group II in which ICB performed with 0.5% 20 mL bupivacaine. Results: Regarding the block performance, group II showed earlier onset time and longer duration of sensory and motor blocks compared to group I (P<0.05) and the performance time was significantly shorter in in group II compared to group I (P=0.015). Number of patients required analgesia was significantly lower in group II compared to group I (P=0.003) was significantly lower in group II compared to group I (P=0.003) and the first rescue analgesic requirement was significantly delayed in group II compared to group I (P<0.001). Conclusions: We found that 0.5% bupivacaine showed earlier onset time and longer duration of sensory and motor blocks compared to 0.25% bupivacaine in infraclavicular block. In Egypt, it represents a noteworthy portion of both male and female cancer cases. The prognosis for colonic carcinoma remains poor due to the lack of early symptoms, emphasizing the need for effective biomarkers to predict prognosis and guide treatment strategies. This study aimed to evaluate SATB2 expression in colonic carcinoma by immunohistochemistry and assess correlation between SATB2 protein and clinicopathological parameters of colonic carcinoma. Methods: This retrospective study was carried out upon 50 cases of colonic adenocarcinoma obtained from the pathology department and early cancer detection unit at Benha Faculty of Medicine during the period of 2017 to 2021. Cases were selected on basis of availability of demographic data (age, sex) and clinicopathological data (Tumor site, tumor size, depth of invasion, lymph node status, grade, TNM stage, lympho-vascular invasion and presence of distant metastasis). Results : There was a highly significant inverse statistical correlation between SATB2 expression and tumor grade, depth of tumor invasion, lymph node metastasis, distant metastasis and tumor stage (P value <0.01). Also, there was a significant inverse statistical correlation between SATB2 expression and presence of lympho-vascular invasion (P value <0.05). Conclusion: SATB2 expression in colonic cancer aligns with key prognostic factors, making it a potential predictor of prognosis. Furthermore, SATB2 expression inversely correlates with tumor aggressiveness, suggesting it may indicate a favorable prognosis, while loss of SATB2 expression may imply a poorer prognosis in colonic cancer.","PeriodicalId":503219,"journal":{"name":"Benha Medical Journal","volume":"31 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141665185","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Allicin is the active ingredient in garlic and responsible for its antiparasitic effects. Aim of work : the current research was conducted to demonstrate the possible curative and preventative benefits of allicin on both adult and juvenile S. mansoni worms. Methods: For 96 hours, immature and adult S. mansoni worms were cultured with varying doses of allicin (25, 50, 100, and 200 µg/ml). Their motor activity and death rate were evaluated every 24 hours using light microscopy. The ultrastructural effects of allicin on worms were assessed by scanning electron microscopy. The researchers used 40 male Swiss albino mice strain CD1, divided into four groups with 10 animals in each group. Allicin was administered to three groups at varied intervals after they were infected with S. mansoni cercariae. Parasitological studies, including worm burden, oogram pattern, and tissue egg load, were used to assess the efficacy of allicin on day 54 after infection. The results: revealed a high significant difference in S. mansoni immature worms when incubated with allicin at doses of 50, 100, and 200µg/ml. Also incubating adult worms of S. mansoni with allicin at concentrations of 100µg/ml and 200µg/ml were significant. In vivo, there was non-significant impact on worm load with high significant rise in dead egg percentage. Conclusion: These data suggest that allicin is effective against S. mansoni worms in vitro, but with little impact in vivo.","PeriodicalId":503219,"journal":{"name":"Benha Medical Journal","volume":"105 25","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141667171","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aimed to evaluate the influence of long-term smoking on macular perfusion using Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCTA). Methods : A prospective, randomized clinical trial was conducted at Benha University Hospital's ophthalmology division from January 2020 to December 2021. Forty participants were divided into smoking (Group 1) and control (Group 2) groups. Exclusion criteria included systemic and ocular diseases, refractive errors, retinal vasculopathies, ocular surgeries, or media opacity. OCTA assessed macular perfusion, while other ophthalmic parameters were measured. Results: The smoking group exhibited a higher smoking index (490.00±325.64) and duration (17.30±7.37 years) compared to controls. Despite comparable visual acuity and intraocular pressure between groups, smokers demonstrated significantly lower superficial and deep layer densities across various macular regions (p < 0.001). The foveal avascular zone (FAZ) area was notably larger in smokers (p < 0.001), indicating compromised perfusion. Conclusions: DCP's is more vulnerable to oxidative damage and poor perfusion brought by cigarette smoking, which led to a considerable drop in VD of DCP compared to SCP. In addition, bigger research examining the long-term effect of smoking on retinal microcirculation in the macula may help clarify the significance of smoking as a risk factor for systemic vascular diseases.","PeriodicalId":503219,"journal":{"name":"Benha Medical Journal","volume":"124 51","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141667814","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
