This took place in the context of a feminist critique of patriarchal relations, a global monitoring of education, and an increased interest in the negative consequences of traditional masculinity, not only for women, queer people, or the nature and global ressources, but also for boys and men themselves. Mainly, the discussions centred on three key topics. First, boys’ encountering, incorporating, and/or resisting cultural ideas of masculinity were being looked at with a strong focus on gender hierarchies and gender norms (Connell 2000; Kimmel 2008; Plummer 1999; Salisbury and Jackson 1996). Second, boys’ situations in educational institutions were discussed controversially with regard to disadvantages and/or privileges of boys in education (Epstein et al. 1998; Kenway et al. 1997; Martino et al. 2009). Third, the situations of particular groups of boys were explored, acknowledging the diversity of boys and the intersectionality of masculinity and gender with other social categories and hierarchies (Martino and Pallotta-Chiarolli 2003; Nayak 2003).","PeriodicalId":503168,"journal":{"name":"Boyhood Studies","volume":"29 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139192487","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand the lived experiences of boys positioned at specific intersections of gender, race, and ethnicity and how this understanding can inform future healthy relationships program design in educational settings. The findings show that racially and ethnoculturally diverse boys navigate racial and ethnic stereotypes in their schools and communities, impacting the way they navigate relationships. Our recommendations include fully integrating content on diversity (rather than specialized diversity units) and having facilitators with similar lived experiences lead programming in order for healthy relationships programs to connect with and engage with a broader diversity of youth.","PeriodicalId":503168,"journal":{"name":"Boyhood Studies","volume":"5 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139193565","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this article, I explore the conceptions of masculinity of young people in Germany and elaborate on the influence of education and educational institutions on notions of masculinity. To do this, I focus on two in-depth case studies, a boy and a girl who are both aged 16, which I analyze using the documentary method. The cases show that education is to be understood as a gender regime that takes an active part in the production of a binary masculinity. At the same time, they also show that education has the potential to transform masculinity.","PeriodicalId":503168,"journal":{"name":"Boyhood Studies","volume":"8 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139188880","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We found that these schoolboys reinforced and challenged hegemonic masculinity by using violence as a means for dominance. However, we also found that boys sometimes subverted hegemonic masculinity. We argue here that violence is not an inevitable outcome of masculinity, as it depends on the nature of peer relations—how boys get on with other boys and girls—as well as on evolving social and policy norms. The ability to subvert masculinity, however, is not separate from hegemonic ideals that see the feminine and female as subordinate. We conclude that masculinity is context-dependent and contradictory, and that addressing masculine norms in early childhood is therefore crucial for fostering nonviolent gender relations.","PeriodicalId":503168,"journal":{"name":"Boyhood Studies","volume":"96 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139193056","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By devising mechanisms to engage young men differently in creative activities, participants in our project were supported to think beyond assumed futures and explore new possibilities. Mobilizing the theory of possible selves, this article draws on data across three creative university outreach workshops in England with 18 participants who were given the opportunity to explore masculinities using creative writing, photography, and dance/movement. Combining artifact analysis and semi-structured interviews, the article argues that these workshops created safe spaces for young men to articulate their concerns and fears about harm and risk in everyday life while facilitating an exploration of alternative possible selves.","PeriodicalId":503168,"journal":{"name":"Boyhood Studies","volume":"44 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139193270","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We refer to “practices of and with boys” in order to grasp the complex dynamics of gender in boys’ lives and to avoid the problems associated with calling these practices “masculinities,” as is done in most research on boyhood. We present a model that aims to recognize both the (re-)production and the critique and subversion of gender norms and gender inequalities in practices of and with boys. Furthermore, we discuss findings related to practices of and with boys in educational institutions throughout childhood and youth, reflecting on the intersection of institution, age, and gender.","PeriodicalId":503168,"journal":{"name":"Boyhood Studies","volume":"23 24","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139195058","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Previous studies largely attribute the phenomenon to a masculine drive toward the quick accumulation of material wealth. This article draws on two primary qualitative studies conducted in the state in 2012 and 2020 and on Bourdieu's notion of habitus to discuss how the local construction of masculinity and social expectations influence boys’ aspirations and preferences and contribute to their decision to drop out of high school. Participants were both males and females who dropped out of school of high school or who did not enroll in high school before entering the workforce. While economic factors are central to males’ disengagement from school, they are underpinned by demands and pressures associated with the social construction of masculinity. Material wealth is seen as a symbol of a man's beauty (nma nwoke). Policy and intervention programmes are needed to mitigate societal pressures on boys in Anambra State.","PeriodicalId":503168,"journal":{"name":"Boyhood Studies","volume":"76 4-6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139195165","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Building upon a subjectivation theoretical framework, these discourses are reconstructed based on interviews with social workers at German elementary schools by the SKAD (sociology of knowledge approach to discourse) research program. Three subject positionings were identified: Boys were positioned as (1) caught up in aggression; (2) naturally deviating from school rules; or (3) sitting on the sidelines. Overall, it was observed that school social work primarily focused on norm deviations and transgressions, while a general orientation towards masculinity norms was rarely challenged. This analysis offers insights into the inherent ambivalence of subject discourses on boys in the field of school social work.","PeriodicalId":503168,"journal":{"name":"Boyhood Studies","volume":"45 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139192335","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
