DESIGN: Mailed survey. SETTING: Not applicable. PARTICIPANTS: 405 managed care pharmacy directors. INTERVENTIONS: Not applicable. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Percentage of respondents identifying the importance of the topics. RESULTS: A response rate of 59.5% was achieved; 81% of the respondents thought CE programs related to specific topics would be valuable to persons in their positions. The longer the respondents held their present positions, the less likely such programs considered to be valuable. Pharmacists placed more emphasis than did non-pharmacists on topics related to traditional pharmacy practice in managed care settings. These topics included OUR: formulary design, patient-oriented pharmacy services, communication skills, legal issues, and employee benefit program design. DATA SOURCES: Recent clinical and alternative medicine literature. DATA SYNTHESIS: A central difference between conventional and alternative medicine lies in their philosophies about their roles in affecting or controlling illness. While conventional practitioners attempt to cure the patient by acting as authoritative experts, alternative practitioners try to teach the patient to tap his or her own inner healing resources. Alternative practitioners hold that the individual has the capacity to maintain health and that people get sick when they are out of balance with their environment or society. Alternative medical practices typically address a spiritual component of health and illness largely ignored in conventional medicine. Because of the increasing acceptance of alternative medical practices, managed care organizations should be aware of their potential medical benefits and cost savings. DATA SOURCES: Current literature describing the long-term care environment. STUDY SELECTION: Not applicable. DATA EXTRACTION: Not applicable. DATA SYNTHESIS: Long-term care is not synonymous with nursing home care. It encompasses a variety of care environments that offer high quality yet less-expensive alternatives to traditional nursing homes and represents a wide array of services formats that differ in name and description among states and regions. Health improvements, increased attention to quality of life, and the need to reduce the cost of care will stimulate the growth of long-term care facilities that are alternatives to nursing homes. CONCLUSION: The growing and evolving long-term care environment presents pharmacists with significant opportunities to expand their role. Managed care organizations must take note of pharmacists' accomplishments in long-term care and use their expertise to maxim...","PeriodicalId":50156,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Managed Care Pharmacy","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68350633","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

I This growth, largely attributed to increased pharmaceutical utilization and newly patented pharmaceuticals that lack generic competition, will more than likely continue. This trend, coupled with the fact that 70% of all prescriptions are covered partially or fully by a third-party payor, I has resulted in increased scrutiny of pharmaceutical dispensing and reimbursement processes. The audit process is one means of reviewing pharmacy programs; it ensures that procedures and reimbursement mechanisms are consistent with contractual and regulatory requirements.
