Up to now, the existence conditions\u0000of this state rely on the presence of a double well in the KH potential,\u0000obtained by averaging the motion over one period of the laser. However, the\u0000approximation involved in the averaging is largely invalid in the region of the\u0000double well structure; therefore this raises the question of its relevance for\u0000identifying signatures of these exotic states. Here we present a method to\u0000establish conditions for the existence of the KH atom based on a\u0000nonperturbative approach. We show that the KH atom is structured by an\u0000asymmetric periodic orbit with the same period as the laser field in a wide\u0000range of laser parameters. Its imprint is clearly visible on the wavefunction\u0000in quantum simulations. We identify the range of parameters for which this KH\u0000state is effective, corresponding to an elliptic periodic orbit.

In particular, a series of experiments\u0000were performed to extract information about properties of static magnetic\u0000fields from absorption profiles of light passing through an atomic gas target.\u0000In the present work, we propose an extension to this method for oscillating\u0000magnetic fields. To investigate this scenario, we carried out theoretical\u0000analysis based on the time-dependent density matrix theory. We found that\u0000absorption profiles, even when averaged over typical observation times, are\u0000indeed sensitive to both strength and frequency of the time-dependent field,\u0000thus opening the prospect for a powerful diagnostic technique. To illustrate\u0000this sensitivity, we performed detailed calculations for the $5s ;,\u0000{}^2S_{1/2}$ ($F=1$) $-$ $5p ;, {}^2 P_{3/2}$ ($F=0$) transition in rubidium\u0000atoms, subject to a superposition of an oscillating (test) and a static\u0000(reference) magnetic field.

The cavity frequency at 13.053 GHz is in resonance with the\u0000$67S_{1/2} rightarrow 66P_{3/2}$ transition, inducing a ladder multiphoton\u0000microwave Rydberg absorption and emission. The peak position does not depend on the laser\u0000frequency, but on the binding energy and the pulse duration. The effect\u0000originates from the fact that bound-continuum dipole transitions are stronger\u0000than continuum-continuum ones. To clearly observe this zero-energy\u0000photoelectric effect, the spectral width of the laser pulse should be\u0000comparable to the binding energy of the ionized orbital, and the second\u0000ionization potential should be larger than the photon energy. These gravitational quantum\u0000states (GQS) were so far only observed with neutrons. However, the existence of\u0000GQS is predicted also for atoms. The GRASIAN collaboration pursues the first\u0000observation of GQS of atoms, using a cryogenic hydrogen beam. This endeavor is\u0000motivated by the higher densities, which can be expected from hydrogen compared\u0000to neutrons, the easier access, the fact, that GQS were never observed with\u0000atoms and the accessibility to hypothetical short range interactions. In\u0000addition to enabling gravitational quantum spectroscopy, such a cryogenic\u0000hydrogen beam with very low vertical velocity components - a few cm s$^{-1}$,\u0000can be used for precision optical and microwave spectroscopy. In this article,\u0000we report on our methods developed to reduce background and to detect atoms\u0000with a low horizontal velocity, which are needed for such an experiment. Our\u0000recent measurement results on the collimation of the hydrogen beam to 2 mm, the\u0000reduction of background and improvement of signal-to-noise and finally our\u0000first detection of atoms with velocities < 72 m s$^{-1}$ are presented.\u0000Furthermore, we show calculations, estimating the feasibility of the planned\u0000experiment and simulations which confirm that we can select vertical velocity\u0000components in the order of cm s$^{-1}$.

The enhanced\u0000sensitivity of this transition to the large class of dark matter models\u0000dominantly coupling to quarks and gluons will ultimately allow us to probe\u0000coupling strengths eight orders of magnitude smaller than the current bounds\u0000from optical atomic clocks, which are mainly sensitive to dark matter couplings\u0000to electrons and photons.
