{"title":"Everyday Democracy and Civic Agriculture","authors":"WanJu Lee","doi":"10.1163/27730611-bja10009","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1163/27730611-bja10009","url":null,"abstract":"Abstract This article develops the concept of “everyday democracy” by analyzing how a community-supported agriculture organization in Taiwan ( CSA - TWN ) practices economic democracy. First, it illustrates how democracy is learned and practiced in daily interactions with the logics of “equality” and “collective decision-making”. Second, it argues that organizations such as CSA - TWN , which operate based on “relationships” and “common values,” need to develop their own democratic mechanisms to ensure consistency of actions and values, which can be achieved through formal and informal conversations. Finally, this article suggests that the informal caring work within CSA - TWN is important as it facilitates the exchange of diverse opinions and emotions, which helps to address conflicts and problems that arise and to sustain the organization’s operations. Although most research on social innovation in Taiwan focuses on problem-solving methods based on the utilitarian perspectives of the public and private sectors, an analytical framework from the societal perspective is proposed in this article. We classify social innovation conducted by the public, private, and civil society sectors as either incremental or radical. This article seeks to provide an overview of the development of social innovation in Taiwan and to answer two main questions. First, how do Taiwan’s government and the private sector mainstream incremental social innovation, and what is its influence? Second, how does a radical approach emerge under this influence? However, students can also be initiators, participants and implementers of programs under USR . This study discusses the central role played by students in the USR project in Kampung Warna-Warni Jodipan, or the Jodipan Colorful Village, by the Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang, in Malang city, Indonesia. This project represents two innovations: (1) teaching innovation, where the lecturer becomes the center, and (2) the innovative project, where the student becomes the center. Under the student-centered USR project, students research the community, generate the idea, initiate and design the project, write proposals, connect the stakeholders and implement the project together with the community. In the past, fishing was the main industry. However, the region now faces issues such as population outflow and aging. Although resources such as the Taichung Harbor Transformation Plan, the Mitsui Outlet Mall, and the Farglory Group Township Project have been developed in recent years, this has also impacted Wuqi’s community and residents’ lives. Therefore, constructing a suitable social practice model in Wuqi, one based on the local cultural background, is important for further assisting local development. Hungkuang University, located near Wuqi district, has been actively promoting social responsibility in recent years and has launched the Local Care Project for the Old Town of Wuqi District, aiming to assist local development.
