The type of research used is library research. Data was collected through reference collection from journals, articles, or books related to local culture in teaching. The analysis shows that the use of local cultural values is able to build student awareness of culture, encourage students to love the uniqueness and value of their culture, and improve their understanding of English material. The strategies that English teachers can apply when teaching using local culture are through materials related to products or objects typical of a region, such as using pictures or photos, conducting discussions, making video projects, practicing conversations, group learning, and making podcasts. Furthermore, the benefits that occur when including local wisdom in English teaching include increasing socio-cultural awareness, making students more aware of their culture and familiar materials, developing students' character, improving students' language skills, and increasing tolerance and mutual respect. To be successful in teaching English through local culture, teachers need to design and emphasize learning materials and activities using local culture so that students are more aware of the uniqueness of their culture.","PeriodicalId":496715,"journal":{"name":"Foremost Journal","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136034657","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To find the answer, there were twenty-two participants involved in this study, they were from public and private schools in East Java. The study employed qualitative methods with questionnaires, interviews and observations as the instruments. To gain the data, the researchers put all possible teaching activities or techniques taken from the theory of teaching English as a foreign language in the questionnaire. Then, the observations were done to see the actual teaching and learning process in the classroom. At last, the interview was employed to enrich the data. This current study found that mostly teachers under the study claimed to use various teaching activities in the teaching and learning process in their teaching. However, during the observations, teaching activities or techniques mainly were done with the Grammar Translation Method.","PeriodicalId":496715,"journal":{"name":"Foremost Journal","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136034832","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on field data, the utilization of local languages through local content education is minimally implemented by educational institutions. This poses a problematic situation as the use of local languages through local content education may vanish and erode due to the advancement of a more globalized world. In the Curriculum 13 itself, the use of local languages in educational institutions is mandated to be included as part of the local content subjects. However, in the \"merdeka\" (freedom) curriculum, the use of local languages is not obligatory, meaning it becomes conditional. This research adopts a qualitative research method, where the focus is on gathering information. Additionally, this study also employed a literature review approach, using journals, academic articles, and other. The research findings indicate that indeed, the use of local languages, content subjects has become rare in some cases, no longer applied, primarily due to the curriculum regulations. Therefore, the author suggests the issuance of a new policy that involves a collective reevaluation of the curriculum to ensure the enduring preservation of local languages in education.

This descriptive qualitative research, analyzed 12 utterances of Trevor Noah from YouTube video entitled “Trevor Noah COMPLETE REMARKS at 2022 White House Correspondents’ Dinner (C-SPAN)” using Grice’s conversational implicature theory. The finding shows that from 12 utterances, every utterance can contain more than one type of flouted maxims, the details are as follows, 10 manner, 9 quality, 7 relevance, 6 maxims of quantity. The researcher also finds that, Noah applied Particularized Conversational Implicature more frequently than Generalized Conversational Implicature, with a ratio of 11:1. Noah has done this to make his satire is less offensive. This research also finds that flouted of maxims does not mean that a conversation has been failed, but that is intentionally done by the speaker to create an implicature effect in his utterance. As long as the speaker and the listener have the same knowledge about the context or background, the conversation will keep going well.

Majority of English teachers only concentrate on teaching four language skills rather than introducing culture to their students. It is critical to analyze cultural aspects in textbooks, particularly in English subjects, to ensure that the cultural values are represented in the English textbook. This study was conducted to find out multicultural values of the source culture and target culture that are represented in Buku Interaktif Bahasa Inggris, discover what techniques of multicultural values of the source culture and target culture are represented, and find out what culture is more represented in Buku Interaktif Bahasa Inggris. This study used content analysis method in order to collect and analyze the data. The result of this study shows that source culture is strongly represented in the textbooks, with National Geography as the multicultural value that mostly appears in the book, conveyed by Geographical Factors as the technique. This study could be useful for both teachers and authors as an input and evaluation so that cultural content can be included and considered in the textbooks or learning process.","PeriodicalId":496715,"journal":{"name":"Foremost Journal","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136349369","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The importance of this study is because corrective feedback in education has an important role because students can find out the errors in writing English. Previous studies have examined Written Corrective Feedback in students’ writing. However, none had conducted a study on this topic at the school where the current study was conducted. This is the gap fulfilled by this study. This study aims to find out the types of student errors in English writing at a Junior High School in Jakarta and to find out the types of Written Corrective Feedback that are often used by the teachers there. This study used descriptive qualitative research methods. This study reveals that there are 13 types of errors found in students’ writing, which are singular-plural, word form, word choice, verb tense, adding a word, omitting a word, word order, incomplete sentence, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, article, and meaning not clear. The findings also reveal that Direct Corrective Feedback is the type of feedback that is mostly used by the teachers to correct students’ errors. It is hoped that future studies could elaborate more on the reasons why teachers prefer a particular type of Written Corrective Feedback.","PeriodicalId":496715,"journal":{"name":"Foremost Journal","volume":"198 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135308082","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
