None of them had previous past ocular and systemic history. The first patient was a 47-year-old man, with best-corrected visual acuity of 20/20 in both eyes. He presented a cotton wool spot in the right eye and two peripheral exudative retinal arterial macroaneurysms in the left eye. Laser photocoagulation was performed and best-corrected visual acuity remained stable. The second one was a 62-year-old-woman with acute visual loss in the right eye (best-corrected visual acuity of 20/400). There was vitreous hemorrhage and a peripheral retinal arterial macroaneurysm in the right eye. Laser photocoagulation was performed and best-corrected visual acuity improved to 20/20. The third patient was a 54-year-old woman, with best-corrected visual acuity of 20/20 in the right eye and 20/600 in the left eye. Fundus examination showed multiple layer hemorrhage in the macular region and retinal arterial macroaneurysms in the superior temporal branch. The cases underwent fluorescein angiography, which confirmed the diagnosis of retinal arterial macroaneurysms","PeriodicalId":49619,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira De Oftalmologia","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69815408","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The authors present the case of a 47-year-old woman with a sudden 5-day painless visual loss in her left eye. At the first visit, the best-correct visual acuities were 20/20 in the right eye and hand motions in the left eyes. Ultrasonography showed an attached retina and a massive vitreous hemorrhage. Pars plana vitrectomy was performed and a dilatation of large vessels was detected bulging from the optic disc. The best-correct visual acuities on day 30 postoperatively was 20/25 in the left eye. Fundus angiography and spectral-domain optical coherence tomography angiography showed anomalous arteriovenous communications with no intervening capillaries. The diagnosis was racemose hemangioma, an arteriovenous malformation of group 2 retina based on the Archer classification.","PeriodicalId":49619,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira De Oftalmologia","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69815300","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

ABSTRACT Objective: The objective of this paper is to evaluate the profile of the cases of conjuntivitis treated in the emergency department of the Banco de Olhos Hospital, emphasizing the infectious conjunctivitis, and compare before and after the onset of the Coronavirus pandemic and social isolation, both in public and private health care system. Methods: A retrospective and transversal study where electronic files of the patients who visited the emergency department between March and June of 2019 and 2020 were reviewed. Results: A significant reduction in the number of consultations at the emergency department was observed after the beginning of the pandemic. From March to June 2019, 21.678 visits were made. In the same period of 2020, this number was 14.194, a drop of 34.5%. The rate of visits having conjunctivitis as main cause also dropped significantly. Infectious conjunctivitis was the one who showed the highest decrease. In 2019, it was responsible for 30.2% of the visits and, in 2020, for 15.5%. There were no changes regarding the gender, but a significantly increase in patients’ age was observed. Conclusion: The study showed a dramatic reduction in the number of visits at the emergency department of ophthalmology regarding infectious conjunctivitis after the beginning of the pandemic, and we believe that the cause is related with an increase of hygiene care, social isolation and restrictions caused by the Coronavirus pandemic.","PeriodicalId":49619,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira De Oftalmologia","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69815288","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recently, however, important studies have improved the understanding of the main pathophysiological events in this condition, especially vascular brain remodeling, impaired autoregulation, and damage of the blood-brain barrier, which are well recognized features of cerebral overperfusion. Methods: In this study, the association between choriocapillaris ischemia with ophthalmic artery blood flow parameters on orbital Doppler ultrasound is reported for the first time using multivariate logistic models. Multivariate logistic models with ophthalmic artery blood flow parameters, as well as major clinical and laboratory predictive variables were established for choriocapillaris ischemia and choriocapillaris ischemia with retinal detachment. Results: In a series of 165 patients, 46 (28%) presented choriocapillaris ischemia; among them, 20 (12%) presented associated retinal detachment. The ophthalmic artery resistive index was the main predictor for choriocapillaris ischemia and choriocapillaris ischemia with retinal detachment in multivariate logistic models. Ophthalmic artery resistance lower than 0.56 was associated with a significantly high incidence of both outcomes. Conclusion: This study supports that the branching pattern of choroidal arterioles and the lobular organization of choriocapillaris are the major morphological aspects underlying endothelial damage and lobular ischemia in the context of choroidal overperfusion. Overperfused lobules bordering areas of choriocapillaris ischemia produce a perfusion pressure gradient, with lobular reperfusion, leakage from reperfused choriocapillaris, and retinal detachment. Ophthalmic artery-resistive index lower than 0.56 is proposed as a major predictor of the overperfusion-related choriocapillaris ischemia and choriocapillaris ischemia with retinal detachment in preeclampsia.","PeriodicalId":49619,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira De Oftalmologia","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69815385","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: Cross-sectional and descriptive study, using data obtained by searching the database of glaucoma patients in their first consultation, before the starting any treatment. Results: 101 patients (177 eyes) were included. Only 31 (30.69%) patients reported a positive family history of glaucoma. We found 26% of the evaluated eyes with advanced perimetric alterations, ten eyes (5.8%) with vision worse than 20/400, of these, three patients had legal blindness in both eyes. Factors associated with glaucoma severity were advanced age and high IOP.
