The authors present the case of a 47-year-old woman with a sudden 5-day painless visual loss in her left eye. At the first visit, the best-correct visual acuities were 20/20 in the right eye and hand motions in the left eyes. Ultrasonography showed an attached retina and a massive vitreous hemorrhage. Pars plana vitrectomy was performed and a dilatation of large vessels was detected bulging from the optic disc. The best-correct visual acuities on day 30 postoperatively was 20/25 in the left eye. Fundus angiography and spectral-domain optical coherence tomography angiography showed anomalous arteriovenous communications with no intervening capillaries. The diagnosis was racemose hemangioma, an arteriovenous malformation of group 2 retina based on the Archer classification.","PeriodicalId":49619,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira De Oftalmologia","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69815300","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

ABSTRACT Objective: The objective of this paper is to evaluate the profile of the cases of conjuntivitis treated in the emergency department of the Banco de Olhos Hospital, emphasizing the infectious conjunctivitis, and compare before and after the onset of the Coronavirus pandemic and social isolation, both in public and private health care system. Methods: A retrospective and transversal study where electronic files of the patients who visited the emergency department between March and June of 2019 and 2020 were reviewed. Results: A significant reduction in the number of consultations at the emergency department was observed after the beginning of the pandemic. From March to June 2019, 21.678 visits were made. In the same period of 2020, this number was 14.194, a drop of 34.5%. The rate of visits having conjunctivitis as main cause also dropped significantly. Infectious conjunctivitis was the one who showed the highest decrease. In 2019, it was responsible for 30.2% of the visits and, in 2020, for 15.5%. There were no changes regarding the gender, but a significantly increase in patients’ age was observed. Conclusion: The study showed a dramatic reduction in the number of visits at the emergency department of ophthalmology regarding infectious conjunctivitis after the beginning of the pandemic, and we believe that the cause is related with an increase of hygiene care, social isolation and restrictions caused by the Coronavirus pandemic.","PeriodicalId":49619,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira De Oftalmologia","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69815288","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: Cross-sectional and descriptive study, using data obtained by searching the database of glaucoma patients in their first consultation, before the starting any treatment. Results: 101 patients (177 eyes) were included. Only 31 (30.69%) patients reported a positive family history of glaucoma. We found 26% of the evaluated eyes with advanced perimetric alterations, ten eyes (5.8%) with vision worse than 20/400, of these, three patients had legal blindness in both eyes. Factors associated with glaucoma severity were advanced age and high IOP. Conclusion: Knowledge of the situation in the initial diagnosis portrays the reality of glaucoma in our environment and predicts actions aimed at preventing blindness.","PeriodicalId":49619,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira De Oftalmologia","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69814918","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Patologias que acometem essa região podem desencadear um conjunto de sinais e sintomas característicos, dando origem a síndrome do ápice orbitário. É uma entidade rara, que consiste em sinais de envolvimento das estruturas nervosas, que atravessam o forame óptico e a fissura orbitária superior, comprometendo os nervos oculomotor, troclear, abducente; a divisão oftálmica do nervo trigêmeo e o nervo óptico. Suas causas incluem afecções neoplásicas, vasculares, traumáticas, infecciosas, inflamatórias e idiopáticas. Muitas vezes, nós nos deparamos com patologias sem tratamento curativo, portanto deve-se atentar para o controle da sintomatologia e a prevenção das possíveis implicações tardias. O objetivo desta série de casos é relatar algumas das causas da síndrome do ápice orbitário e sua apresentação clínica aguda, além de alertar sobre as possíveis implicações crônicas.","PeriodicalId":49619,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira De Oftalmologia","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69814988","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
