However, significant efforts are still urgently needed to address the undesirable properties of waterborne polymer coatings, i.e., poor hydrophobic properties and numerous micropores. Herein, dual nano-SiO2 and siloxane-modified waterborne-polymer-coated urea was successfully developed. The characteristics of waterborne-polymer-coated urea before and after modification were compared. The results demonstrate that nano-SiO2 and siloxane modification improved the hydrophobicity (water absorption decreased from 119.86% to 46.35%) and mechanical strength (tensile strength increased from 21.09 to 31.29 MPa, and the elongation at break exhibited an increase of 22.42%) of the waterborne polymer coatings. Furthermore, the –OH number of the modified coatings was decreased, while the coating surface formed a nano-scale rough structure, prolonging the nitrogen (N)-controlled release period from 7 to 28 days. Overall, the proposed novel dual-modification technique utilizing waterborne polymer coatings highlights the significant potential of eco-friendly coated urea with renewable coatings in modern agriculture.","PeriodicalId":49457,"journal":{"name":"Sustainability Science","volume":"17 15","pages":"6987-6987"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.mdpi.com/2071-1050/17/15/6987/pdf?version=1754016756","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147912051","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study explores the adsorption characteristics of microplastics for antibiotics under groundwater environmental conditions and the influence of typical influencing factors of the groundwater environment (pH, pollutant concentration, aquifer media, dissolved organic matter, and ionic strength) on the adsorption process. Polyethylene (PE) and tetracycline (TC) were selected as typical microplastics and antibiotics in the experiment. The study results showed that the adsorption of TC by PE reached equilibrium at 48 h, and the adsorption kinetics fitted pseudo-second-order kinetics models well. The adsorption isotherm was consistent with the Langmuir model. The adsorption capacity of PE for TC was highest under neutral conditions and positively correlated with the initial concentration of TC. The aquifer media exhibited limited effects on the adsorption process. Fulvic acid (FA) significantly suppressed TC adsorption onto PE, attributable to competitive adsorption mechanisms. TC adsorption on PE initially increased then declined with Ca2+ concentration due to Ca2+ bridging and competition. This research elucidates the adsorption mechanisms of PE towards TC, providing theoretical basis and reference for assessing the environmental risk of microplastics and antibiotics in groundwater.","PeriodicalId":49457,"journal":{"name":"Sustainability Science","volume":"17 15","pages":"6908-6908"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-07-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147908494","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study systematically investigates the performance optimization of EMR-FA ceramic composites through the coordinated regulation of raw material ratios, sintering temperatures, and additive effects. While the composite with 85 g FA exhibits the highest mechanical strength, lowest porosity, and minimal water absorption, the formulation consisting of 45 wt% EMR, 40 wt% FA, and 15 wt% kaolin is identified as a balanced composition that achieves an effective compromise between mechanical performance and solid waste utilization efficiency. Sintering temperature studies revealed temperature-dependent property enhancement, with controlled sintering at 1150 °C preventing the over-firing phenomena observed at 1200 °C while promoting phase evolution. XRD-SEM analyses confirmed accelerated anorthite formation and the morphological transformations of FA spherical particles under thermal activation. Additive engineering demonstrated that 8 wt% CaO addition enhanced structural densification through hydrogrossular crystallization, whereas Na2SiO3 induced sodium-rich calcium silicate phases that suppressed anorthite development. Contrastingly, ZrO2 facilitated zircon nucleation, while TiO2 enabled progressive performance enhancement through amorphous phase modification. This work establishes fundamental phase–structure–property relationships and provides actionable engineering parameters for sustainable ceramic production from industrial solid wastes.","PeriodicalId":49457,"journal":{"name":"Sustainability Science","volume":"17 14","pages":"6647-6647"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-07-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.mdpi.com/2071-1050/17/14/6647/pdf?version=1753102400","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147901338","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, it is essential to develop efficient adsorption materials for rapid removal of antibiotics in water. In this study, abundant and renewable wetland plants (lotus leaves, Arundo donax, and canna lilies) were utilized as raw materials to prepare biochar through slow pyrolysis combined with KOH chemical activation. The prepared biochar was employed to adsorb typical tetracycline (TC) antibiotics (TC-HCl, CTC-HCl, OTC-HCl) from water. The results showed that the optimum biochar (LBC-600 (1:3)) was prepared at a pyrolysis temperature of 600 °C with the mass ratio of KOH to lotus leaf of 1:3. The optimum pH for the adsorption of the three antibiotics were 5, 4, and 3, respectively. The highest adsorption rates reached 93.32%, 81.44%, and 83.76% for TC-HCl, CTC-HCl, and OTC-HCl with 0.6 g/L of biochar, respectively. At an initial antibiotic concentration of 80 mg·L−1, the maximum adsorption capacities achieved 40.17, 27.76, and 24.6 mg·g−1 for TC-HCl, CTC-HCl, and OTC-HCl, respectively. The adsorption process conformed to the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models, indicating that it was a spontaneous endothermic process and primarily involved monolayer chemical adsorption. This study transformed wetland plant waste into adsorbent and applied it for antibiotic removal, providing a valuable resource utilization strategy and technical support for recycling wetland plant residues and antibiotic removal from water environments.","PeriodicalId":49457,"journal":{"name":"Sustainability Science","volume":"17 14","pages":"6625-6625"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-07-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.mdpi.com/2071-1050/17/14/6625/pdf?version=1753077978","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147902585","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Because lignin is a natural resource and has an aromatic ring skeleton structure, it could be used as an alternative to fossil fuels. This study effectively resolved this challenge by utilizing a sustainable one-step epoxidation process to transform lignin into a bio-based epoxy resin. The results verified the successful synthesis of epoxidized bamboo lignin through systematic characterization employing Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, hydrogen spectroscopy/two-dimensional heteronuclear single-quantum coherent nuclear magnetic resonance, quantitative phosphorus spectroscopy, and gel permeation chromatography. Lignin-based epoxy resins had an epoxy equivalent value of 350–400 g/mol and a weight-average molecular weight of 4853 g/mol. Studies on the curing kinetics revealed that polyetheramine (PEA-230) demonstrated the lowest apparent activation energy (46.2 kJ/mol), signifying its enhanced curing efficiency and potential for energy conservation. Mechanical testing indicated that the PEA-230 cured network demonstrated the maximum tensile strength (>25 MPa), whereas high-molecular-weight polyetheramine (PEA-2000) imparted enhanced elongation to the material. Lignin-based epoxy resins demonstrated superior heat stability. This study demonstrates the conversion of bamboo lignin into bio-based epoxy resins using a simple, environmentally friendly synthesis process, demonstrating the potential to reduce fossil resource use, efficiently use waste, develop sustainable thermosetting materials, and promote a circular bioeconomy.","PeriodicalId":49457,"journal":{"name":"Sustainability Science","volume":"17 13","pages":"6201-6201"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147907548","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study reports a novel Polyethyleneimine-4-cyanobenzaldehyde/p-Phthalaldehyde-Amidoxime (PEI-PAC-AO) adsorbent for the effective extraction of uranium from aqueous solutions. The structural and performance characteristics of the adsorbents were analyzed through FT-IR, TGA, SEM, CA, and ICP-MS. Adsorption mechanisms were investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), revealing that uranium adsorption is due to coordination with N and O atoms in the amidoxime groups. Batch adsorption experiments showed that PEI-PAC-AO exhibited excellent removal efficiency at pH 6. The static adsorption performance better fits the Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order kinetics. Adsorption results indicated that the removal extent of uranium ions remained at 80% after nine consecutive adsorption cycles using 0.5 M nitric acid as the eluent. These findings suggest that PEI-PAC-AO is a sustainable and promising material for the efficient removal of uranium from wastewater, offering a sustainable and environmentally friendly approach that contributes to environmentally responsible wastewater treatment strategies.","PeriodicalId":49457,"journal":{"name":"Sustainability Science","volume":"17 13","pages":"5953-5953"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.mdpi.com/2071-1050/17/13/5953/pdf?version=1751342949","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147890545","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A comprehensive study was conducted in the Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir to determine the discharge rates of key water springs and assess their capacity to meet the crop water requirements within their respective command areas. The research focused on seven vital springs—Martand, Achabal, Malakhnag, Sherbagh, Verinag, Lukhbawan, and Kokernag—which are critical for domestic and agricultural purposes. The study was carried out from May to October 2018, employed the weir formula to measure spring discharge, and utilized evapotranspiration (ETo) calculations, integrating evaporation and rainfall data to estimate crop water requirements. The results revealed significant variability in spring discharge rates, with Verinag spring being the most productive at 4.55 m3/s, followed by Sherbagh at 1.97 m3/s, while Lukhbawan exhibited the lowest discharge rate at 0.17 m3/s. Springs such as Verinag, Martand, and Achabal demonstrated sufficient capacity to meet the water demands of crops in their command areas, highlighting their potential for sustainable agricultural support. These findings emphasize the importance of integrating surface–subsurface water dynamics in water resource management to ensure efficient utilization of these springs for both domestic and irrigation needs. The study provides valuable insights into optimizing spring water use to address increasing water demands in the region, contributing to sustainable development and resource conservation.","PeriodicalId":49457,"journal":{"name":"Sustainability Science","volume":"17 12","pages":"5490-5490"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.mdpi.com/2071-1050/17/12/5490/pdf?version=1749880188","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147911589","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, it remains unclear how rhamnolipids and earthworm casts affect the anaerobic biodegradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). This work aimed to investigate the efficacy and mechanism of biostimulants on the anaerobic biodegradation of PAHs through PAH degradation, functional gene abundance, and bacterial community structure. The results revealed that both stimulants promoted the anaerobic degradation of typical PAHs, such as phenanthrene, pyrene, and benzo(a)pyrene. Rhamnolipids and earthworm casts promoted the degradation of phenanthrene and pyrene more significantly, with the degradation rate increasing by 13.75% and 16.92%, respectively, and the degradation rate of benzo(a)pyrene increased by 10.26% and 11.7%, respectively. The addition of rhamnolipids and earthworm casts significantly stimulated the abundance of functional genes (UbiD, UbiE) in bacterial communities, and this study indicated a strong association between the abundance of functional genes and PAH degradation efficiency. Furthermore, biostimulants altered the microbial community structure and affected microbial diversity and function. Earthworm casts significantly promoted the Azospirillum (0.02–20.17%) and Acinetobacter (0.01–15.70%) genera, which played an important role in the degradation process of PAHs. Therefore, these findings suggested that the enhancement of anaerobic biodegradation of PAHs by rhamnolipids and earthworm casts is probably due to an increase in abundance of both PAH-degraders and their degrading genes (UbiD, UbiE). This study could provide valuable insights for advancing the sustainable remediation of PAH-contaminated soils.","PeriodicalId":49457,"journal":{"name":"Sustainability Science","volume":"17 12","pages":"5417-5417"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.mdpi.com/2071-1050/17/12/5417/pdf?version=1749715969","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147915890","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, a readily hydrolyzable 3,9-divinyl-2,4,8,10-tetraoxaspiro-[5.5]-undecane is utilized to prepare a water-based binder. Specifically, the acrolein produced by hydrolysis undergoes in situ polymerization to form a linear polymer, while the other hydrolyzed product, pentaerythritol, physically crosslinks these polymer chains via hydrogen bonding, generating a network polymer (BTU). Additionally, gallic acid (GA), a substance derived from waste wood, is further introduced into BTU during slurry preparation, forming a biphenol-containing binder (BG) with a multi-hydrogen-bonded structure. This resilience and robust cathode framework effectively accommodate volumetric changes during cycling while maintaining efficient ion and electron transport pathways. Furthermore, the abundant polar groups in BG enable strong polysulfide adsorption. As a result, sulfur cathode with a high mass loading of 5.3 mg cm−2 employing the BG (7:3) binder still retains an areal capacity of 4.7 mA h cm−2 after 50 cycles at 0.1 C. In this study, a novel strain Priestia megaterium strain BM.1 that was capable of reducing Cr(VI) was domesticated. In order to improve its Cr(VI) reduction and adsorption performance, calcium-modified hydrochar (HC-Ca) was utilized to immobilize the strain to obtain the composite material BM.1-Ca. The BM.1-Ca composite achieved a Cr(VI) removal efficiency of 97% at an initial concentration of 60 mg/L within 60 h, representing a 1.96-fold enhancement compared to BM.1 alone and demonstrating significantly improved microbial Cr(VI) removal capacity. The addition of HC-Ca was instrumental in maintaining the stable Cr(VI) removal efficiency of BM.1 in the presence of altered incubation environments and interference from co-existing ions. The reduction in Cr(VI) by BM.1 and the immobilization of Cr(III) on the surface of BM.1-Ca are the main removal mechanisms of Cr(VI). Analysis of microbial oxidative stress and extracellular polymers showed that HC-Ca was able to attenuate the oxidative stress of BM.1 as well as promote the secretion of extracellular polymers.
