Here, we formally propose a new lianescent species of <jats:italic>Sigmoidotropis</jats:italic> that occurs disjunctly in enclaves of moist forest of mountainous regions surrounded by dry vegetation at three different localities in the Brazilian states of Bahia and Minas Gerais. Its phylogenetic position and morphological affinities with other genera of Phaseolinae were evaluated by Bayesian inference and maximum likelihood analyses, using sequence data from the nuclear ITS/5.8S and plastid <jats:italic>trnK/matK</jats:italic>. To better understand this new species’ widely disjunct distribution and a possible connection between its populations in the past, an environmental niche modelling (ENM) analysis was performed. The phylogenetic analyses revealed that <jats:italic>Sigmoidotropis</jats:italic> appears closest to the genera <jats:italic>Ancistrotropis</jats:italic> and <jats:italic>Delgadoana</jats:italic>, together forming the Sigmoid‐keel clade. The new species proposed here is strongly recovered within <jats:italic>Sigmoidotropis</jats:italic>, being most closely related to <jats:italic>S. ekmaniana</jats:italic>, <jats:italic>S. elegans</jats:italic>, and <jats:italic>S. megatyla</jats:italic>. The ENM indicated changes in the potential distribution of the new species over different climatic periods, with expansion during colder periods and contraction during warmer periods, leading to possible relictual populations in moist forest enclaves. A description of the new species <jats:italic>Sigmoidotropis maculata</jats:italic> is presented, along with illustrations, a distribution map, taxonomic comments, and conservation status assessment.","PeriodicalId":49448,"journal":{"name":"Taxon","volume":"30 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":3.4,"publicationDate":"2024-08-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142227362","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Bell","doi":"10.1002/tax.13240","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1002/tax.13240","url":null,"abstract":"The ongoing reclassification of higher plant genera (their division, combining and recircumscription) is the cause of extensive modifications to binomials. Many genus reclassifications have been far more taxonomically disruptive than necessary to achieve monophyletic genera. We suggest six rules that should be followed when considering genus reclassifications to minimise any taxonomic disruption and maintain the stability of genus‐species binomials without compromising their scientific validity. Here, we apply these rules to the eucalypts (Myrtaceae), a well‐known group of 840 tree and shrub species that dominate the Australian continent and have worldwide economic importance. Traditionally, most eucalypts have been placed in the genus <jats:italic>Eucalyptus</jats:italic>. However, the genus‐level classification of the eucalypts has been in a state of flux since 1995, when the segregate genus <jats:italic>Corymbia</jats:italic> was described, resulting in new binomials for over 100 species, including a number of well‐known species. More recently, the segregate genus <jats:italic>Blakella</jats:italic> has been described, again resulting in numerous new binomials, and again including a number of well‐known and widely grown species. Here, we demonstrate that the genus‐level classification of Brooker provided far less taxonomic disruption compared to the three‐genus classification of Hill and Johnson and the four‐genus classification of Crisp & al., while still achieving genus‐level monophyly (as understood at the time). We also demonstrate that a one‐genus classification will minimise any <jats:italic>future</jats:italic> genus‐level taxonomic disruption that would otherwise occur and provides the greatest taxonomic utility for the range of users dealing with this important group of plants as we continue to gain a deeper understanding of the relationships between taxa.","PeriodicalId":49448,"journal":{"name":"Taxon","volume":"7 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":3.4,"publicationDate":"2024-08-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142218714","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
