Agrowastes such as sawdust, wood ash and rice bran were selected for this study. Sawdusts from Xylopia aethiopica and Mitragyna ciliata and Rhizophora racemose wood were obtained from Mile II Timber Market Diobu in Port Harcourt while the wood ash was sourced from burnt Rhizophora racemose wood after cooking. Rice bran was obtained from Dilomat Farms and Services Limited in Rivers State University. All selected agrowastes were brought to the Department for further studies. The atomic absorption spectrophotometer methods described by Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC) were used for the determination of proximate, mineral, vitamin and antinutrient contents of these agrowastes. Proximate evaluation revealed rice bran to possess highest values for moisture (11.63±0.15), lipid (7.50±0.10) and carbohydrate (35.63±0.60). Highest values (9.56±0.03) for protein, 71.50±0.10 for fibre and 15.00±0.50 for ash were recorded for M. ciliata, X. aethiopica and R. racemose wood ash respectively. Mineral and vitamin assessment revealed wood ash to contain highest calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and sodium while thiamine (0.23±0.01) was only recorded for rice bran. Antinutrient investigation showed the availability of oxalate, tannin, carotenoid, polyphenol, flavonoid and lignant in all tested agrowastes. However, X. aethiopica recorded highest antinutrient composition compared to other assessed agrowastes. Cultural laboratory method was used to evaluate the fungi flora while the method of Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC) was used to determine the proximate nutrient. Fungi screening revealed a total of seven fungal organisms (Rhizopus sp, Aspergillus sp, Gliocladium sp, Paecilomyces, Penicillium, Fusarium sp, Scopulariopsis sp). However, all isolates were present in SAMNUT-21 while SAMNUT-23 recorded all with exceptions of Gliocladium sp and Scopulariopsis sp. Highest incidence (25.3% Fusarium sp) and (31.5% Aspergillus sp) were recorded for SAMNUT-21 and SAMNUT-23 respectively, 8.0% Gliocladium sp and 6.9% Paecilomyces recorded lowest incidence for SAMNUT-21 and SAMNUT-23 respectively. Proximate evaluation showed the availability of moisture, protein, fat, fibre and ash in both varieties of groundnut. Highest values of moisture (16.96±0.02) protein (32.72±0.00) and fat (33.67±0.01) were observed for SAMNUT-23 while SAMNUT-21 recorded highest values (33.60±0.02), (34.04±0.04) and (48.95±0.00) for moisture, protein and fat respectively. Generally, both varieties had appreciable proximate nutrient but are still susceptible to fungi attack.","PeriodicalId":494028,"journal":{"name":"RESEARCH JOURNAL OF PURE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY","volume":"234 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135803184","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Four kaolin mining sites within four Local Government Areas in the state were studied. Background Ionizing Radiation levels of each of the mining site was measured using a Gamma Scout handheld radiation meter and a GPS meter used to obtain the actual positions where the BIR levels were taken around each kaolin site. A total of twenty-five (25) samples were collected for Gamma spectrometry analysis at National Institute of Radiation Protection and Research, University of Ibadan. The mean BIR exposure rates for Ukwuani, Aniocha South, Ughelli North and Ughelli South LGAs were 0.01mRh -1 , 0.013mRh -1 , 0.013mRh -1 and 0.014mRh -1 respectively and were within the world’s recommended permissible limit of 0.013mRh -1 given by UNSCEAR. The mean activity concentrations of 238 U, 232 Th and 40 K in kaolin samples were estimated to be 137.028 ± 7.194, 13.532 ± 1.568 and 6.724 ± 0.396 Bqkg -1 respectively for Ukwuani; 425.494 ± 22.16, 18.63 ± 2.17 and 11.955 ± 0.71 Bqkg -1 respectively for Ughelli South; 596 ± 30.772, 18.728 ± 2.124 and 8.912 ± 0.526 Bqkg -1 respectively for Ughelli North and finally, 120.026 ± 6.235, 10.533 ± 1.182 and 15.024 ± 0.879 Bqkg -1 respectively for Aniocha South. These results compare quite well with the world’s average value of activity concentrations for natural radionuclides reported by UNSCEAR, except for 40 K which is higher than the world’s average at Ughelli North and South. The values of all the radiological hazard parameters for all the mining sites are less than the recommended limits. The calculated Excess Lifetime Cancer Risk also reveal that the values are all within the recommended limits, therefore, the risk of cancer inducement due to radiation exposure is within the acceptable limits for all the mining sites.","PeriodicalId":494028,"journal":{"name":"RESEARCH JOURNAL OF PURE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135801425","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Antimicrobial resistance and the obvious negative effects of synthetic medications have sparked a renewed interest in the hunt for novel agents to treat both new and old infectious illnesses. This study aimed to contribute to this effort by extracting and characterising potential therapeutic compounds from Capsicum annuum fruit and then testing those compounds' efficacy against various clinical disease-causing bacteria. The plant material under study was reduced to a powder and then extracted using a soxhlet apparatus using n- hexane and ethyl acetate, respectively. The hexane extract underwent phytochemical analysis, the results of which indicated the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, steroids, phenols, tannins, and saponins. Using GC-FID, we were able to determine the concentrations of these phytochemicals; the results indicated a cyanogenic glycoside (9.3843 ppm) to have the highest concentration and a cardiac glycoside (1.6804 ppm) to have the lowest. The results of the proximate analysis showed that the concentration of carbohydrate was the greatest (at 40.636%), while the concentration of ash was the lowest (at 2.214%). Methanol was added little by little while the extracts were being separated on a silica gel column in ethyl acetate. The calculated fractions were analysed. TLC, UV, and IR spectroscopy were used to evaluate the resulting fractions, and from there, 50 fractions were aggregated into 10 combined fractions for NMR (1D and 2D) analysis to determine the structures of their components. Hesperetin, a kind of flavonoid, was identified as JLS-3's chemical makeup. High susceptibility of bacteria to the isolated chemical in the antimicrobial assay suggests the isolated natural flavonoid may be useful as a pretreatment for illnesses caused by these pa","PeriodicalId":494028,"journal":{"name":"RESEARCH JOURNAL OF PURE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135803192","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sports are activities or experiences that give enjoyment or recreation; pastime; diversion such an activity, when competitive, requiring more or less vigorous bodily exertion and carried on, sometimes as a profession, according to some traditional form or set off rules, whether outdoors or indoors. In recent years, there has been an increased focus on sustainable design strategies for indoor sports halls, with a particular emphasis on reducing energy consumption and costs. Day lighting reduces energy consumption, improves visual comfort, and creates a sense of well- being for users. The people in Awka, are interested in sports, but currently lack a modern indoor swimming hall to address their swimming interest. The primary aim of this research is to create awareness and bring to the attention of the Anambra State urban players that Awka, has no known indoor swimming facility especially, within the Nnamdi Azikiwe University with a huge students’ population. The research adopted qualitative and descriptive research methods dealing with data from both primary and secondary sources. With the introduction of an indoor swimming pool at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, the population of the school will increase as it will attract students interested in swimming that is lacking in most southeast schools and cities. This research recommends the introduction of an indoor swimming pool at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, and if not for any other thing, to help the university in, increasing their student’s population, create jobs for the students, attract revenue to the university and encourage inter university competitions.","PeriodicalId":494028,"journal":{"name":"RESEARCH JOURNAL OF PURE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135858552","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The activity concentration of the sediments when calculated with radiological parameters was within the safe value for Annual Effective Dose Equivalent (AEDE) and Excess Lifetime Cancer Risk (ELCR) while the calculated value exceeded the safe value for Absorbed Dose (D) and Annual Gonadal Equivalent Dose (AGED) respectively. The area is prone for health hazards and risk as many dwellers are exposing to absorbed dose due to anthropological activities.","PeriodicalId":494028,"journal":{"name":"RESEARCH JOURNAL OF PURE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135816422","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
