This research aims to determine the influence of climatic, geographic, demographic, economic, social and water-supply-service-related factors on the per capita water consumption in Brazil using a dataset with 1746 municipalities. For this purpose, a multiple linear regression model using log-transformed data was fitted. The results show that household income, water tariff, number of residents per household, temperature, percentage of households with washing machine, city population, gender, percentage of households with piped water and the municipality’s GDP significantly influence urban water consumption.","PeriodicalId":49392,"journal":{"name":"Urban Water Journal","volume":"22 1","pages":"1462 - 1470"},"PeriodicalIF":2.7,"publicationDate":"2023-11-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139235816","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, overuse, environmental stress, and management issues degenerate their condition, particularly in countries with high populations, limited funds, and improper infrastructure. A megacity in eastern India, Kolkata is blessed with two significant rivers, an efficient canal system, and a wetland of international prominence. Unfortunately, various factors disturbed their natural flow, slaying them with pollution, sedimentation, and reduced aquatic biodiversity, thus losing their socio-cultural importance. The paper analyses the interactions and inter-relationships between the city’s main waterways in a comprehensive environmental, socio-economic, and cultural context. It also presents a prescriptive framework for the eco-restoration and management of the city’s waterways. The target-driven strategies comprise the spatio-physical components of land, land-water interface, and water for physical, ecological, and hydro-morphological restoration of these waterways as an urgent step towards urban sustainability and resilience.","PeriodicalId":49392,"journal":{"name":"Urban Water Journal","volume":"14 1","pages":"1361 - 1374"},"PeriodicalIF":2.7,"publicationDate":"2023-11-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139235461","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The average age of urban water pipelines is growing, and the annual rehabilitation volumes are often lower than needed to improve or even preserve the level of service quality. The existing rehabilitation strategies range from simple pipe-age-based approaches to complex multiparameter strategies. The needed input of specific and detailed data, which are usually not available for water utilities, impedes a straightforward implementation of the latter strategies. Therefore, this study presents a two-step pipe rehabilitation strategy that enables the utility to automatically prioritise the pipes and related street areas/sections based on condition ranking. The strategy was validated on an operational water network in Tallinn, Estonia.","PeriodicalId":49392,"journal":{"name":"Urban Water Journal","volume":"33 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135819326","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research hypothesizes that switching to sustainable land-use/land-cover (LULC) in three Concon watersheds reduces the severity of their corresponding hydrological responses. High sustainability LULC zones would decrease runoff and enhance interception and infiltration, generating hydrograph curves with extended lag time and moderate peak flows. The Hydrological Simulation Program FORTRAN (HSPF) is used for simulating watershed processes. Decreases in peak flows of 31.1%, 19.8%, and 54.5%, were estimated. Therefore, sustainable LULC reduces the severity of the hydrological responses, benefiting storm water management. Real-world applications in Europe and the USA achieved comparable results. Urban master plans in Chile have favored the alteration of natural landscapes (anthropization). Per national regulations, changes to urban plans can be made every ten years. The results of this research will be valuable in future revisions of Concon’s urban plan.KEYWORDS: Land useland coverhydrological modelingstormwater managementConcónChile Disclosure statementNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the author(s).Data availability statementThe datasets used and/or analyzed during the current study are available from the corresponding author on request.","PeriodicalId":49392,"journal":{"name":"Urban Water Journal","volume":"30 4","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136382253","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
