A total of 55 university students majoring in English education at a college of education in Kyongbuk province participated in a semester course where they each built their own virtual world of English class using Zep and completed a survey. Additionally, some of them conducted actual English classes using Zep during their four-week teaching practicum and were interviewed about their perceptions. The findings of the study showed that they perceived using Zep for English teaching as very new, interesting, and user-friendly. However, they had relatively lower perceptions in terms of usefulness, satisfaction, and usability, and the lowest perceptions in terms of access stability and authenticity. Based on these results, several pedagogical implications are suggested in the field of English education.","PeriodicalId":491793,"journal":{"name":"Eon'eohag yeon'gu","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136035202","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In fact, although 能(不能)VC and V得(不)C represent 'possibility', this is a secondary function. The main functions represent modalities, which correspond to dynamic modality and epistemic modality, respectively. Based on this point, this paper examined how 能(不能)VC and V得(不)C came to have different modality functions through the transition process from a diachronic perspective, and re-identified the distinctive features between the two structures. In addition, this paper also discussed how different types of modality between the two structures cause differences in discourse contex from synchronic perspective, focusing on utterance focus and practiculity.","PeriodicalId":491793,"journal":{"name":"Eon'eohag yeon'gu","volume":"105 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136035006","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

First, we talked about the limitations of formal approach to English passive voice for English translation, pointing out that this approach mainly focuses on the analysis of form-oriented sentences. For a better understanding of the passives, the concepts of functional analysis beyond the level of sentence is required in grammar translations from English to Korean. To examine the applicability of functional grammar of English translations to Korean, we explored the usage of passive voice sentences in The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald and its Korean translations. For this, a selection of English passive voice structures from The Great Gatsby and its Korean adaptations in parallel were discussed, to analyze the use of active voice, passive voice, and thematic-coherence appropriateness in usage and for translations. The findings of the functional analysis shows that functional approach of translations of English could improve the understanding of the passive voices in translations because it incorporates not only the form and meaning aspect of the language, but also the usage. Finally, we make some suggestions for the improving translations by incorporating functional grammar into the process.","PeriodicalId":491793,"journal":{"name":"Eon'eohag yeon'gu","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136034999","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To this end, the criteria and requirements presented in the relevant previous studies were used to prepare criteria for analysis, and analysis was conducted focusing on secondary textbooks. As a result of the textbook analysis, all non-learning composition section were fulfilled, but it was regrettable that vocabularyrelated information was not provided in the internal composition of learning. It was also regrettable that it did not reflect the intercultural perspective. In terms of web characteristics, there were complementary points such as not providing sufficient data and two-way communication. Therefore, this study proposed four complementary items based on the analysis results, such as expanding the Korean vocabulary for learning, considering learner characteristics, actively utilizing web characteristics, and supplementing guidelines.","PeriodicalId":491793,"journal":{"name":"Eon'eohag yeon'gu","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136035186","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Four translation strategies were observed: maintenance, omission, toning up, and toning down. The most prevalent strategy was maintenance (116, 54%), which involved literal translation to preserve the essence and cultural vibe of the original language. Toning down (63, 30%) was used more frequently than toning up (7, 3%) due to the presence of emotionally intense taboo language. Toning up was specifically applied to 'Ssi/Ssibal' and 'miscellaneous expressions.' Omission (27, 13%) was employed when it was impractical to translate Korean taboo language into English due to time, space, and subtitling constraints. Translating taboo language in the film “Drug King” is challenging because it requires a translator to find culturally appropriate equivalents that convey accurate meanings.","PeriodicalId":491793,"journal":{"name":"Eon'eohag yeon'gu","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136035190","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

First of all, we examine the two endangered languages from a language policy perspective: the Jeju language used in Jeju and the Gaelic language in Ireland. This is because the countries for each and local communities show great interest in preserving the language and make the language policy clear by law. Through the examination of two endangered languages with different linguistic situations and different geographical locations, it is possible for us to make the effective endangered language policy proposals in the future. The other is to suggest what kind of policy considerations are needed for endangered language conservation by comparing two endangered language policies.","PeriodicalId":491793,"journal":{"name":"Eon'eohag yeon'gu","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136035000","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Matters to be noted when using 'deul' as a subjecthood test are as follows. First, 'deul' combines well with nouns with high-animacy, among which are human nouns. Second, the event plural 'deul' is consistent with a predicate that can be interpreted distributionally. In Chapter 3, subjecthood was verified for the multiple subject constructions presented in the previous discussion. As a result, problems arising from the use of 'deul' as a subjecthood test in existing discussions were revealed, and subjecthood verification results different from previous discussions were derived.","PeriodicalId":491793,"journal":{"name":"Eon'eohag yeon'gu","volume":"105 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136035191","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study takes Korean short story ‘You Are So Lonely(너무도 쓸쓸한 당신)’ and its two Chinese translations as analysis objects, and selects representative cultural elements that can reflect the characteristics of Korean society and culture from the analysis objects. Based on the ‘three dimensional transformation’ of Eco-translatology theory, this study investigates and analyzes the translation methods of the cultural elements in the two Chinese translations of ‘You Are So Lonely’. Finally, based on this, this study discusses an executive method for translating cultural elements in Korean short stories.","PeriodicalId":491793,"journal":{"name":"Eon'eohag yeon'gu","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136035196","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We predicted challenges for Chinese readers in fluency speed due to their transparent writing system, and for English and Spanish readers in accuracy. Surprisingly, English learners showed higher speed and accuracy across all groups. Comparing the types of reading errors, phoneme substitution and repetition errors were the most common in all languages, but different characteristics are also observed across languages. The results of the study show that even intermediate learners can make many errors in phonetic reading, and the need for pronunciation training is confirmed. It is also emphasized that it will be difficult for them to develop into proficient readers at the advanced stage if their reading fluency does not improve. This study explored language-specific differences based on actual learners' phonetic reading, and can be used as a basis for future controlled analyses of language-specific differences.","PeriodicalId":491793,"journal":{"name":"Eon'eohag yeon'gu","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136035004","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
