Hence, it become important to investigate the natural products like red ginger (Zingiber officinale var. Rubrum) and garlic (Allium sativum) as antifungal against HIV patient-isolated Candida albicans. This experimental study used two antifungal assays (Disc diffusion and antibiofilm assay). Both red ginger and garlic extract were extracted by maceration method. Candida albicans isolate was isolated from a volunteer HIV Patient with oral candidiasis. The outcomes included the diameter of the inhibition zone and optical density (OD) that were expressed as mean and standard deviation and analysed by Kruskal-Walis. This study showed that the highest concentration of both red ginger (0.67 ± 0.55 mm) and garlic extract (0.67 ± 0.46 mm) had the widest diameter of inhibition zone. Meanwhile, the highest inhibition of biofilm formation was found in the lowest concentrations (25%) of red ginger (2.22 ± 1.24) and garlic extract (3.65 ± 0.24). Any concentration of red ginger or garlic extract did not significantly affect the antifungal activity (P-Value: 0.392). Overall, it can be concluded that both red ginger and garlic extract at any concentration showed a weak antifungal activity against HIV patient-isolated Candida albicans strain.","PeriodicalId":490812,"journal":{"name":"Jurnal Penelitian Pendidikan IPA (JPPIPA)","volume":"169 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135218691","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research was conducted to obtain the most selective insecticidal active ingredient from Sesbania sesban plant for controlling cabbage caterpillars, choose a target mode of action that has a safe impact on the environment, and determine insecticidal stability during storage of the material prior to application and its stability in water after application. The dried powder of S. sesban leaves was extracted in stages using a series of solvents, namely hexane, DCM, ethanol and water, respectively. Each of the extract fractions produced was tested for its lethal toxicity against Plutella xylostella larvae and Diadegma semiclausum imago. Each of mortality data were processed by probit analysis to produce LC50(s) to determine their insecticidal selectivity. Subsequent bioassays were carried out using extract-water of S. sesban leaves and the data were processed by probit analysis to determine their anti-ovipositor, ovicidal powers and anti-feedant properties against P. xylostella. The insecticidal stability of S. sesban was also studied according to variations in the storage time of the simplicia before extraction, the storage time of the extract before dissolution, and its stability in water during application. The data was processed using ANOVA. The results show that the insecticidal activity of the ethanol extract fraction of S. sesban leaves for controlling cabbage caterpillars was very selective, namely very toxic to P. xylostella but very less toxic to D. semiclausum. Against P. xylostella, S. sesban leaf extract has also been proven to significantly prevent oviposition, inhibit egg hatching and feeding activity. The insecticidal power of S. sesban did not decrease significantly during storage of the simplicia for less than three months and during storage of the extract for less than seven days. However, the toxicity of the extract solution decreased drastically after 24 hours of application","PeriodicalId":490812,"journal":{"name":"Jurnal Penelitian Pendidikan IPA (JPPIPA)","volume":"IA-11 6","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135218825","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
