This article describes the historical context from which Vatican II emerged and outlines the scale and significance of the changes it set in train. It then considers the Council’s developing theology of the laity and the challenges of implementing it. In the local context, the article examines the way in which these issues were reflected in the pages of Open House, an independent Scottish Catholic journal of comment, opinion and reflection, founded in 1990 with the aim of giving lay people a voice, enabling them to keep the conversation about Vatican II alive. It concludes by welcoming Pope Francis’ call for a synodal church, in which all the people of God share in the church’s life and mission, seeing this as offering a fresh interpretation of the Council and a new synthesis of its teaching.","PeriodicalId":489123,"journal":{"name":"Theology in Scotland","volume":"125 52","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141115257","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

How can those of us who proclaim the Gospel week by week explicate it in such a way that it is not only comprehensible, but plausible to the inquirer? This article introduces Community Organising (CO) as but one way forward for a church that is now suffering an existential crisis in a culture that has become largely indifferent to its claims. It will argue that the gospel becomes more plausible when encountered within the context of community engagement. It does so by laying out a description of CO, providing a theological rationale, and sharing the results of interviews conducted with those practising CO in their communities.","PeriodicalId":489123,"journal":{"name":"Theology in Scotland","volume":"117 9","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141115880","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
