Due to its geography, the urbanization process in this area tends to form agglomerations that suffocate small rivers and streams. Based on a floristic survey of the family Malpighiaceae, we discuss the importance of taxonomic knowledge for the preservation of the flora of São Luís Island. We list 18 species of Malpighiaceae that occur in the area. Among them, only four have herbarium collections from the 21st century. <i>Byrsonima intermedia</i> and <i>Heteropterys mathewsiana</i> are new records for Maranhão State and <i>Bunchosia apiculata</i> is a new record for São Luís Island. Although they have not been formally assessed, most species are under threat, especially from disorderly urban growth and the unregulated discard of waste. Maintaining natural habitats and controlling threats might reveal relevant new findings about the diversity of Maranhão and contribute significantly to the preservation of the biodiversity on São Luís Island.</p>","PeriodicalId":48909,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Coastal Conservation","volume":"54 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.1,"publicationDate":"2023-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138518360","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The breakwater was configured in sections of crest and trough; Structure A has its crest and trough section on the sea-bed. Structure B was only a crest section placed on the sea-bed, while Structure C’s crest section is on the sea-bed with its trough section trenching into the sea-bed. Regular wave is propagated over the structures to examine their differences in reflecting wave energy. The result shows that Structure C of the three wavelike trapezoidal submerged breakwaters can effectively reflect more waves while covering less area on the sea-bed. The possibility of a dual peak on the resonant of the reflection coefficient is seen for all the three wavelike trapezoidal submerged breakwaters with a shift in their prominent peak along with the dual peak position. The variation of breakwater height and top widths directly affects the peak value of the reflection coefficient. However, the breakwater height will shift the positioning of the peak values occurrence.</p>","PeriodicalId":48909,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Coastal Conservation","volume":"49 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.1,"publicationDate":"2023-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138518354","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study examines the individual behaviour of three adjacent beaches within Shoalhaven Bight, a secondary compartment on the south coast of New South Wales (NSW). The Shoalhaven River discharges intermittently into the northernmost of the beaches, and a fluvial component is detectable within beach and foredune sands. The distribution and orientation of headlands constrains dispersal of fluvial sediments, and results in lower wave-energy conditions further south, implying limited sand transport from one beach, or tertiary compartment, to another. Two years of monthly subaerial surveys across ten different profiles and modelled storm-wave conditions during the major storms, were used to compare the response of beach volume and shoreline position. The greatest changes in volume were observed near Shoalhaven Heads and the northern ends of Culburra and Warrain-Currarong beaches. Results indicate the distinct individual response of neighbouring beaches over the two-year period, in contrast to general trends in beach behavior that might be inferred from long-term regional monitoring programs. However, they also demonstrate the limitations of short-term observations in comparison to those longer-term studies. The NSW beach systems of are some of the best understood in the world in terms of regional behaviour, as a consequence of several decades of surveys on key beaches. However, more focused local monitoring programs may be needed to establish detailed coastal sand transport, and an understanding of intermittent delivery of fluvial sand and longshore inputs and outputs, within and between different compartments.","PeriodicalId":48909,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Coastal Conservation","volume":"4 2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135405369","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
