Both species are new records for Madeira Island, and this is the first record of E. africanus for a European country. Molecular analysis (18S rRNA gene) of E. africanus confirmed morphological identification. This integrative approach of comparing morphological and molecular characters with validated references allowed us to reliably identify this species, which has repeatedly been misidentified in the past.","PeriodicalId":48866,"journal":{"name":"Acarologia","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2023-11-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139271383","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Toritrombicula kirhocephales Goff, 1982 described from Papua New Guinea was for the first time recorded in Asia (Thailand). Ascoschoengastia lorius (Gunther, 1939) was for the first time recorded in Malaysia. Finally, Ericotrombidium cosmetopode (Vercammen-Grandjean and Langston, 1971) described from free larvae, was for the first time recorded on a host (bird Pellorneum ruficeps Swainson); and Leptotrombidium miculum (Traub and Audy, 1954) was for the first time recorded on a bird host. The majority of the currently known 265 Unionicolidae species are associated with molluscs during at least one stage of their life cycle. A new host record is presented here from India: Unionicola (Myanamaratax) savadiensis from the host Lamellidens corrianus. In addition to L. corrianus, U. savadiensis was also found associated with two other mussel species, i.e., Lamellidens marginalis and Corbicula cashmiriensis, but DNA evidence confirms parasite-host association between U. (M.) savadiensis and L. corrianus, indicating that its findings in the two other mussel species should be considered as 'vagrant' associations. This report is thus significant for two reasons: (i) the record of the new host and geographic associations of the mite and mussels extends our knowledge on the known mite-mussels associations, and (ii) the study emphasized the importance of including experts from acarology, malacology, and molecular biology, to ascertain the nature of mite-mussel associations.","PeriodicalId":48866,"journal":{"name":"Acarologia","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136296336","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Benth.], date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.), Khejri [Prosopis cineraria (L.) Druce], castor bean (Ricinus communis L.), maize (Zea mays L.), sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.), cogongrass [Imperata cylindrical (L.) P. Beauv.], and cattail (Typha sp.), at 25 ± 1 °C, 65 ± 5% relative humidity and a photoperiod of 16:8 h (L: D). Pollen of maize and date palm did not exert any mortality during pre-imaginal development, while the highest immature mortality was observed on cogongrass pollen. The longest immature development of both sexes was obtained when sunflower pollen was the food source, whereas it was shortest on castor bean pollen followed by date palm pollen. Females fed on maize pollen laid the highest number of eggs, while the females on cogongrass laid the lowest number. The intrinsic rate of increase (r) and the finite rate of increase (λ) were highest on date palm pollen and the lowest on cogongrass. Overall, we found that date palm and maize pollen are the most promising alternative food sources of the species tested for A. swirskii because populations reared on date palm and maize pollen showed no pre-adult mortality and had the longest oviposition period, and the highest fecundity and population growth rates.","PeriodicalId":48866,"journal":{"name":"Acarologia","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135592224","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the present study, the functional responses and predation rates of two predatory mites Macrocheles mammifer Berlese (Macrochelidae) and Stratiolaelaps scimitus (Womersley) (Laelapidae) on M. usitatus pupae were evaluated. The former was discovered in a cowpea Vigna unguiculata (Linn.) Walp. field of southern China, while the latter is commonly used as a biological control agent for soil-dwelling pests. Both M. mammifer and S. scimitus females consumed more M. usitatus than protonymphs, and the predation rate of the adult stage of M. mammifer was found to be significantly higher than that of S. scimitus. Likewise, logistic regression analysis revealed that both predators exhibited a type II functional response. Females of M. mammifer and S. scimitus displayed a higher attack rate and shorter handling time (T<sub>h</sub>) compared to conspecific protonymphs when preying on pupae of M. usitatus. Female M. mammifer recorded the highest attack rate (a) of 4.028, closely followed by female S. scimitus at 3.994. The protonymph of M. mammifer had an attack rate of 2.651, while the protonymph of S. scimitus displayed the lowest rate of 1.402. Female M. mammifer exhibited the shortest handling time (0.089), indicating superior prey-handling ability. Overall, the predatory mites M. mammifer and S. scimitus demonstrated considerable promise for managing M. usitatus, with M. mammifer displaying higher efficacy than S. scimitus.","PeriodicalId":48866,"journal":{"name":"Acarologia","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135696255","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
