Its production and management need low inputs compared to the other staple crops. The natural nutritional content of sweet potato roots varies up on the flesh color the contain. Thus, Orange-fleshed sweet potatoes are one of the richest natural sources of beta carotene, a plant-based compound that is converted to vitamin A in your body so as to combat malnutrition, including vitamin A deficiency. In addition to beta- carotene, OFSP is known as a source of dietary fiber, complex carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins A, C, and B, iron, calcium as well as the making of industrial starch and leaves also could be consumed as vegetables. A 100-150 g serving of boiled roots of orange-fleshed sweet potato can supply the daily requirement of vitamin A for young children which can protect them from blindness. Along with the β-carotene, the pro-vitamin A, the young children and adults can also get adequate number of calories, vitamin C and other micronutrients through increased consumption orange-fleshed sweet potato. Therefore, sweet potato an important crop in the economic uplifting of humans and serving as both food security crop and nutrition security crop.","PeriodicalId":487963,"journal":{"name":"Global academic journal of agriculture and biosciences","volume":"07 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139390256","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Potato demands high level of soil nutrients due to relative poorly developed and shallow root system in relation to yield. Factors that limit crop yield (both in quantity and quality) can be categorized into four major headings such as soil, genetic, climatic and management practices. Intra-row spacing had great influence on economically important characteristics such as total yield, processing grade yield, tuber size distribution and tuber quality. As plant density increases, there is a marked decrease in plant size and yield plant-1. This effect is due to increased inter-plant competition for water, light and nutrients. Proper N fertilization is critical for optimizing potato yield and quality. application of N exerted significant influence on all the growth parameters that is showing positive increment. Nitrogen supply plays a paramount part in the balance between vegetative and its reproductive for potato. nitrogen fertilization influences the potato tuber yield and quality. Low nitrogen usually causes low dry matter and sugar levels, while excessive nitrogen promotes vine growth and delays tuber initiation. Nitrogen management is critical for building leaf area to harvest sunlight for photosynthesis to maximize yield. Therefore, effective management of nutrients and proper use of plant spacing is critical for potato production, as tuber yield and quality.","PeriodicalId":487963,"journal":{"name":"Global academic journal of agriculture and biosciences","volume":"37 8","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139390189","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, drought induces a number of morphological, physiological, and biochemical alterations in sweet potatoes, which can have a detrimental effect on their agronomic and economic output. For example, drought reduces root output, branching, leaf area index, stem height and length, stomatal closure, leaf size, and photosynthesis. Furthermore, it causes oxidative stress, which results in the creation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that are harmful to plants. Plants employ many signaling pathways to respond to water stress by modifying their growth patterns, activating antioxidants, accumulating suitable solutes and chaperones, and making stress proteins. These physiological, metabolic, and genetic modifications can be served as the best indicators for choosing drought-tolerant genotypes. Assessing of the physiological and biochemical features of certain varieties is important for the implementation of drought resistance measures. Adapted genotypes can be selected and improved for particular growing conditions by using suitable tools and drought tolerance-related selection criteria. By regulating genetics in this way, the improvement of drought-resistant varieties may become cost-effective for smallholder farmers.","PeriodicalId":487963,"journal":{"name":"Global academic journal of agriculture and biosciences","volume":"20 s6","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135430605","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These water bodies are teeming with freshwater fish. The availability of these fishery resources has led to the habitation of people whose main occupation is harnessing these resources in Hausa land. These people are professionally known as the Sarkawa. The Sarkawa's primary occupation is fishing and hunting aquatic animals that inhabit the waters. The practice of traditional healing is not alien to the Hausa people. It is an old practice that was used even before the Hausa people came into contact with foreign civilizations from the east or the west. In Hausa society, practitioners of various traditional occupations play a pivotal role in the traditional healthcare delivery system. They often resort to the use of herbs, such as roots, bark, stems, and leaves, as some of the ingredients in their remedies. Parts of animals are also used for the treatment of ailments and diseases. Fish and fishery products also form part of the ingredients used in Hausa traditional healing. This paper, therefore, seeks to explore the uses of fish in Hausa's traditional healing practices. Through a survey, different practitioners of traditional healing were sampled and interviewed to obtain information from them regarding the usage of fish as medicine or as an ingredient in the treatment of various ailments. This paper has revealed that Hausa professional fishermen are knowledgeable in the use of fish as medicine for the cure of diseases and ailments that afflict human beings. They also offer their health services to those who seek their assistance.","PeriodicalId":487963,"journal":{"name":"Global academic journal of agriculture and biosciences","volume":"81 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136253158","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The random sampling method was used to select 81 households, and both qualitative and quantitative data were collected. Formal and informal surveys were conducted to gather information about the socioeconomic and institutional issues. Descriptive statistics and diversity indices were used for data analysis. According to the results of the study, agriculture is the largest source of income in the study areas, followed by off-farm activities such as daily labor, handcraft and pension. The dominant crops grown in the watershed are maize, teff, and haricot bean, respectively. Livestock rearing is also the major means of livelihood in the study area. About 37%, 19% and 17% of the farmers owned cows, sheep and goat, respectively, in the Edo watershed. The watershed is characterized by a dynamic farming system. For instance, about 63% and 32% in the introduction of new varieties and declining in soil fertility changes over the last decade were recorded, respectively. About 58% of the households indicated that there has been a decreasing and irregularity in rainfall, while 20% of the households reacted that there is the emergence of animal and plant diseases, increasing temperature, and decrease in river flow and springs over the last 10 years in the watershed. The baseline study also identified that water erosion, deforestation, and over-tillage are the major causes of the degradation of natural resources in the watershed. In general, this study concludes that land degradation and biodiversity loss are serious concerns in the watershed. Awareness creation and strengthening capacity of rural communities on integrating crops, livestock, and natural resource management technologies for effective soil and water conservation measures should be enhanced for sustainable livelihood improvement.","PeriodicalId":487963,"journal":{"name":"Global academic journal of agriculture and biosciences","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135295202","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The term \"climate\" refers to long-term weather patterns, whereas the term \"climate change\" refers to changes in weather patterns through time. Climate, which can refer to a county, state, continent, or the entire world, is simply the pattern of weather that prevails on average in a location. Despite rigorous analysis of weather data conducted, it is difficult to forecast the effects of climate change for a specific agricultural operation because of the numerous human and environmental elements influencing it as well as the increased variability in weather over time and across space. After more than a decade of disagreement, the scientific community has now come to the conclusion that climate change is one of the planet's most pressing environmental issues of this century. The issue has evolved from a scientific to a political and economic matter, with dire economic repercussions, according to conventional thinking. Climate change has numerous impacts on the production of crops. The productivity of crops is subjected to a variety of stress and potential yields are rarely achieved. In order to sustain crop production with present-day challenges, there have to be packages to manage stresses caused by climate change. If properly managed, some sectors such as the horticulture sector could be might benefit from the impact of climate change in terms of energy, productivity, and market advantages. This review paper, therefore, reviews the impact opportunity and challenges of climate change on the productivity of crops.","PeriodicalId":487963,"journal":{"name":"Global academic journal of agriculture and biosciences","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136363227","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It specifically identified the types of livelihood of beneficiaries in the study area and assessed how the programme benefited rural communities. Data were collected using structured questionnaire administered to fifty-seven beneficiaries using three-stage sampling technique. Data generated were analyzed with descriptive and inferential statistical tools. The study revealed that the age bracket is uniformly distributed across the age groups with greater proportion (37.78%) of the respondents’ ages falling within the age bracket of above 56years.Majority of the respondents were married (91.11%) and educational exposure (84.4%). Also, about 25% (11) of the respondents earned less than ₦100,000 annually and (77.27%) made use of their personal savings to run their enterprises. The majority of farmers engaged in crop production (77.27%) and plant grains (57.14%) as their major crop produce. Also, majority (72.09%) of the Community farmers had no access to credit facilities and nearly half of the respondents (46.51%) did not practice record keeping. The study further showed that majority (56.1%) adopted the banking savings as their preferred mode of saving and (83.33%) do not belong to any existing groups and cooperatives. (64%) had never participated in any agricultural and rural development project. The study found out that access to credit facilities was the major interest of communities and existing groups were not strong enough to control market or operate as pressure group to influence access to credit facilities. Thus, the study recommends a simple and functional micro credit delivery system to the farmers in order to enable them access loan for their businesses, there should be awareness of the project in order to increase and strengthen their livelihood activities.","PeriodicalId":487963,"journal":{"name":"Global academic journal of agriculture and biosciences","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135236628","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
