Ambystoma altamirani is listed as endangered by the IUCN (IUCN 2022) and as threatened by the Mexican government (SEMARNAT 2019) (see Heredia-Bobadilla and Sunny 2021 for further discussion of conservation status). Throughout its distribution, this species is negatively affected by the introduction of Rainbow Trout (Estrella-Zamora et al. 2018, Guerrero de la Paz et al. 2020). Gosner Stage 23 tadpoles were exposed to decreasing water levels (gradual or rapid) until the beginning of metamorphic climax (Stage 42). A control group was reared in constant water levels. Tadpoles reared in decreasing water levels reached the metamorphic climax earlier and metamorphosed at a smaller size than those reared in constant water levels. Further, tadpoles experiencing rapid depletion of water reached the metamorphic climax earlier and metamorphosed at a smaller size than those experiencing gradual depletion of water levels. Tadpoles of P. maculatus showed adaptive plasticity in metamorphosis to pond drying. Survival of tadpoles in treatments and the control was 100%. Vocalizations may provide species-specific information useful for taxonomic and systematic assessments because they act as a premating isolating mechanism and may thus carry a phylogenetic signal (Köhler et al. 2017). Moreover, studying the vocalizations of frogs and toads enhances a more comprehensive understanding about their population and distribution dynamics, allowing for the acoustic monitoring of targeted species (Teixeira et al. 2019). Pseudoeurycea is the most speciose genus (40 spp.) and Plethodontidae is the largest family (88% of salamander richness) present in the country (AmphibiaWeb 2023). Eleven species of Pseudoeurycea occur in the state of Veracruz (Torres-Hernández et al. 2021, CázaresHernández et al. 2022), where the type locality in the Sierra de Zongólica of P. jaguar is located. The species exhibits cryptic habits and adapts very well to disturbed environments such as agricultural areas (Sasa et al. 2009). These features, added to its high prolificacy, make B. asper responsible for the highest snakebite incidence throughout its distribution (Sasa et al. 2009). The tropical forests of the new world contain a high variety of species of different sizes, shapes, and colors. The predator’s diet-derived metabolites released in excreta of predator after consumption of P. maculatus tadpoles were used to simulate predation threat. Both laboratory-reared and wild-caught tadpoles of P. maculatus showed antipredator behavioral responses i.e., reduced swimming movements and overall time spent in swimming and had a higher burst speed in response to water borne dietary cues of predators. Further, the antipredator responses of wild-caught tadpoles were significantly higher than those exhibited by laboratory-reared tadpoles. The studythus shows that antipredator behavior in these tadpoles is innate.
