Using the open field test, it was shown that in intact fish, with increasing temperature, locomotor activity increases (most rapidly in the range of 20–25°C) and reaches a maximum at a temperature of 30°C, which can be close to the temperature optimum (or correspond to it) for the Senegal bichir. In visually deprived fish, locomotor activity is maximum at 20°C and decreases monotonically with increasing temperature; all indicators of locomotor activity (frequency of crossing test lines; time spent crossing the test line; distance covered by the fish; swimming speed) vary in visually deprived fish weaker than in intact ones. The differences in the behavior of intact and visually deprived fish indicate the presence of a functional relationship between vision and locomotor activity in evolutionarily ancient Cladistia.</p>","PeriodicalId":48537,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Ichthyology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2024-06-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141513820","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The subarctic structure of water masses along the Pacific coast off the northern Kuril Islands largely determines the conservatism of the vertical (bathymetric) structure of seasonal fish aggregations. The dynamic character of currents in the area off the islands with a large number of straits leads to significant variability in the location of fish aggregations in the direction along the coastline in interannual and seasonal aspects. In the autumn-winter period of the year, with cooling, the core of the total ichthyomass moves towards the upper slope of southeastern Kamchatka and the southern protrusion of the slope off Paramushir Island. In the spring-summer period, with warming, fish migrate dynamically along the slope to the south reaching lower depths in the shelf zone. At this time, fish are distributed along the entire Pacific coast off the northern Kuril Islands, forming separate aggregations on the shelf and upper parts of the slope off Paramushir and Onekotan islands, as well as on the slopes of the Fourth Kuril Strait and guyots near the above islands. The bathymetric range of fish habitat generally varies from 100–450 m in the cold season to 50–250 m in the warm feeding season.</p>","PeriodicalId":48537,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Ichthyology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2024-05-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140941293","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The data for 37 thousand catches performed with the bottom and multi-depth trawls at the depths between 0–1200 m are processed. It has been revealed that the species fish tend to spawn throughout the year, with two periods of peak spawning activity in the second half of a spring season and from the late summer season to the first half of an autumn season. The female fish ready to spawn migrate down the water column, keeping deeper than 600 m, where the males ready to spawn are concentrated. After spawning, they come back to the feeding areas of less water depths. The juvenile giant grenadier less than 30 cm in length can be encountered in the mesopaelagic and upper bathypelagic zones, which do not appear to form dense aggregations. The majority of the specimens less than 30–40 cm in length and smaller commonly leave this water column layer to occupy the bottom water layers along the continental shelf. Such differentiation between the juvenils and the sexually mature specimens can provide the opportunity to avoid cannibalism and to use the habitat food sources efficiently.</p>","PeriodicalId":48537,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Ichthyology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2024-05-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140941223","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
