This was to ensure the timeframe spent washing our hands was enough to reduce the spread of infection. However, hand hygiene is not that simple, and the suggestion that such measures would be sufficient to limit any potential risks to health is misleading. The following article will establish the actualities of safe hand hygiene, and explain why it is so important and how it is best achieved. Through doing so, it will ensure healthcare workers are informed and able to make beneficent decisions for their safety, and for the safety of their patients/clients.","PeriodicalId":482974,"journal":{"name":"British Journal of Healthcare Assistants","volume":"50 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140267520","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Communication is one of the key activities of living in the Roper-Logan-Tierney model (2000) . Effective communication is crucial when offering people care and support, as it assists in understanding the needs and concerns of the patient, building a therapeutic relationship between the patient and support staff, and planning and delivering individualised care. Communication is more than the verbal exchanges that take place, it also includes non-verbal cues, written communication and the appropriate use of silence. When the healthcare assistant and assistant practitioner engage in effective communication, they can create an environment where the patient feels comfortable in expressing how they are feeling, divulging their fears and making known their expectations.","PeriodicalId":482974,"journal":{"name":"British Journal of Healthcare Assistants","volume":"24 11","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140267447","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Maintaining a safe environment is a basic survival skill, which involves managing our own safety and adapting our physical and intellectual abilities to manage risk. This article focuses on the activity of maintaining a safe environment in health and illness for the duration of a person's lifespan. The person's dependence and independence in the activity are discussed, along with factors influencing the activity. Understanding hazards in the care setting and how to promote patient safety effectively are key attributes of a safe and effective care provision.","PeriodicalId":482974,"journal":{"name":"British Journal of Healthcare Assistants","volume":"123 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139809964","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
