Despite being deemed unsafe, during paddling season a number of adult and teenage paddling crews practice in the Ala Wai for a variety of reasons. In recent years, more discussion and focus has been turned to improving the water quality of the Ala Wai Canal. By doing a water quality study on two tributaries that feed into the Ala Wai watershed, the research group hoped to determine if there was a statistically significant difference between the mean water quality of the two streams. By measuring 952 samples in Pūkele Stream and 889 samples in Makiki Stream taken every fortnight over a 14-year period, the representative suspended solids entering from the eastern and western sides of Ala Wai Canal are compared statistically. Thus, a good general picture of the average difference in water quality between the tributaries is obtained. Through this sample study, it was found that there is a statistically significant difference between the average water quality of the two streams. This finding implies that there is a big enough difference between the suspended solids in the two streams to prioritize the Pūkele Stream over Makiki Stream for remedial actions.","PeriodicalId":477265,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of International Structural Engineering and Construction","volume":"6 24","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140268940","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To address this challenge, it is essential to effectively manage irrigation systems. In this research, an optimization algorithm was used to minimize the economic cost of irrigation system design. The implemented methodology includes the following steps: determining the fictitious continuous flow rate (qfc) and the number of shifts, functionally designing the irrigation network with pumping operations in shifts, and finally designing the network using Linear Programming (LP). Inputs to the model include network topology, set point pressures, design speed ranges, and pump characteristic curve. The model output provides the diameters of the irrigation system lines. In consequence, this methodology was applied in the irrigation system of the community of San Pedro de la Bendita in the province of Loja. The study demonstrates a significant cost reduction in the hydraulic design of the irrigation network when operating in shifts using LP compared to the cost of a conventional hydraulic design.","PeriodicalId":477265,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of International Structural Engineering and Construction","volume":"67 S10","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140407390","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Geotechnical risks constitute a large part of the risks of construction projects. Technical problems related to soil characteristics can lead to delays in the schedule and cost overruns in the budget of the projects. Geotechnical risks with the potential to cause major damage to projects must ultimately be prevented before they happen. Recently, many technological tools are available to use strategically for the management of such risks. The integration of various numerical methods with different technological tools might be effective for this purpose. The use of the right method or tool will greatly contribute to geotechnical risk management. Since the management of these risks can directly and/or indirectly affect the work program, the healthy progress of the project depends on the adoption of correct risk management approaches and strategies. With the aim of o determine the effect of technological tools in the management of geotechnical risks in this study, literature review about the management of geotechnical risks in construction projects was examined, and the methods used were compiled. The results of this study are expected to be a guide in terms of introducing technological tools to practitioners in the sector and improving risk management in their course.","PeriodicalId":477265,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of International Structural Engineering and Construction","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135004484","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
