Methods: The study population included all rehabilitation therapists in Tehran Province, Iran, in 2022, working in both public and private sectors. A sample of 261 therapists was selected using a quota sampling technique. The disability attitude questionnaire was employed to gauge attitudes towards individuals with disabilities, while therapists’ job burnout was evaluated using the Maslach burnout inventory. The therapists were approached through both in-person and online visits. Hypotheses were tested using correlation coefficients, linear regression, and analysis of variance (ANOVA), and data were analyzed using SPSS software, version 26. Results: The results revealed a significant negative relationship between job burnout and its dimensions (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment) with attitudes towards individuals with disabilities. Additionally, a negative and significant relationship was observed between job burnout and the variables of age, and work experience, while a positive and significant relationship was found with the variable of weekly working hours. Furthermore, a positive and significant relationship was observed between attitudes and the variables of age and work experience, while a negative and significant association was detected with weekly working hours. Occupational therapists exhibited more favorable attitudes compared to other rehabilitation groups. Physiotherapists displayed the highest burnout levels among the various rehabilitation disciplines. Conclusion: The study underscores the importance of integrating strategies to enhance rehabilitation therapists’ attitudes and alleviate burnout into the strategic planning initiatives of the Ministry of Health. Furthermore, efforts to reduce the work hours of rehabilitation therapists should be prioritized.","PeriodicalId":476072,"journal":{"name":"Function and disability journal","volume":"129 20","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140078753","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Various factors can predict post-injury complications, including ankle muscle strength, pain, and activity level. So far, no study has exclusively investigated the predictive role of these factors. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the role of these factors in ankle instability, functional mobility, and gait speed in individuals with ankle sprain. Methods: This study was conducted on 140 individuals with ankle sprains who were referred to medical centers in Shiraz City, Iran. The demographic information of the patients (including the time elapsed since the sprain, etc.) was recorded by a demographic questionnaire. Related tests were also used to evaluate ankle muscle strength, pain, activity level, ankle functional instability, functional mobility, and gait speed, respectively. Results: In the regression models, the predictive value for each outcome of ankle functional instability, functional mobility, and walking speed was 45.5%, 58.8%, and 65.3% of the variance, respectively. In all stepwise models, ankle muscle strength was the strongest predictor for the outcomes of functional ankle instability, functional mobility, and gait speed. Conclusion: Ankle muscle strength, level of education, history of sprain in the last year, and age were the vital predictors of ankle functional instability. Muscle strength, age, and sprain status were the critical predictors of functional mobility respectively. Muscle strength, pain, age, duration of sprain, and activity level were the crucial predictors of gait speed.","PeriodicalId":476072,"journal":{"name":"Function and disability journal","volume":"18 5","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138955181","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: Three OD test formats were administered to 74 healthy young adult subjects, hole-in-card test for sighting dominance, near-point-of-convergence (NPC) test for motor dominance, and +1.50 to blur test for sensory dominance. All of these tests were performed while the best correction was in front of the subject’s eyes. An interview for preferred dominance and a finger-tapping test for performance dominance were administered to determine the dominant hand. Results: Right eye dominance was indicated in 66.2% with the hole-in-card test, 56.8% with the NPC test, and 51.4% of cases with the +1.50-to-blur test. Statistically, a significant nonrandom relationship was observed between the results of hole-in-card and NPC tests (P=0.000), hole-in-card and +1.50-to-blur tests (P=0.003), and also between the results of NPC and +1.50-to-blur tests (P=0.003). In addition, it was found that in 52.7% of the cases, all three dimensions of eye dominance (sighting, sensory, and motor) are not in the same eye and do not have pure eye dominance. In examining the dominant hand, the majority of subjects were right-handed both in the preference (62 of 74 [83.8%]) and in the performance dimension (63 of 74 [85.1%]). Statistical analysis shows a significant nonrandom relationship between the pure dominant hand and the pure dominant eye (P=0.000). In addition, the pure dominant hand (0.813) and pure dominant eye (P=0.126) are independent of gender. Conclusion: Determining the OD, similar to determining the hand dominance based on their different dimensions, can have different results. According to the results, in all dimensions of ocular and hand dominance, both the dominant eye and the dominant hand are more on the right side of people. Furthermore, the pure dominant eye and pure dominant hand are not independent of each other.","PeriodicalId":476072,"journal":{"name":"Function and disability journal","volume":"68 11","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138957092","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: In this study, 16 hearing adolescents aged 11–16 and 16 deaf and DHH adolescents with similar chronological ages participated. The CCC was completed with parents of DHH and hearing adolescents. Results: The study’s results revealed that DHH and hearing adolescents had a significant difference in pragmatic composite scores (PCS) and the score of all CCC subscales. The results showed that in all subscales of the CCC, DHH adolescents received lower scores from their parents than hearing adolescents. The inappropriate initiation and stereotyped language subscales of the CCC had the highest correlation rates. Also, the pragmatic composite score showed the highest correlation with the stereotyped language subscale. Conclusion: DHH adolescents showed weaker performance in pragmatic skills than hearing adolescents.","PeriodicalId":476072,"journal":{"name":"Function and disability journal","volume":"55 16","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138957117","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the crucial auditory processing disorders in these children is a binaural processing problem. Binaural hearing leads to improved auditory performance in noisy situations. This research aims to develop an auditory training program based on binaural interaction at the brainstem level and to investigate its effect on the binaural listening skills of children with a specific learning disability. Methods: After developing the rehabilitation program and determining its validity, this intervention study is conducted in three stages. The first stage includes baseline assessments, the second stage includes the implementation of rehabilitation intervention and the third stage consists of the re-implementation of the tests of the first stage once immediately after intervention and then once after 45 days of training. Masking level differences (MLD), Persian auditory recognition of words in noise (PARWIN), and binaural speech-auditory brainstem response (Speech-ABR) tests are the primary outcome measures. Persian randomized dichotic digits test (PRDDT), Persian pediatric competing word test (PPCWT), Persian pediatric competing sentences test (PPCST), and Persian version of the auditory processing disorder questionnaire (APDQ-P) were included as secondary outcome measures. The sample size in each intervention and control group was 15 people and the duration of training was 3 months. Conclusion: Considering the importance of brainstem function in binaural hearing, it is recommended to investigate the effectiveness of the developed binaural interaction training program in improving hearing in background noise in children with specific learning disabilities.","PeriodicalId":476072,"journal":{"name":"Function and disability journal","volume":"113 11","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138958550","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Choosing the right suspension system based on the functional needs and expectations of the amputee is a crucial step in the process of making the prosthesis and as a result, prosthetic rehabilitation. The critical side effects caused by “a weak suspension system” are pain and skin sores due to piston movement between the socket and stump and as a result, abnormal walking, reducing the amputee’s satisfaction and comfort. Methods: This study was conducted using a simple quasi-experimental method on six unilateral below-the-knee amputees. For each person, two prosthetic sockets were made with different suspension systems, one socket with a conventional pin-lock suspension system and the other socket with an innovative suspension system with a plunger cylinder. In this study, the level of satisfaction with the suspension system with a questionnaire and the amount of piston movement between the remaining limb and the prosthetic socket with the method of photography and the use of an indicator during 5 stages of a constant loading test, including full weight bearing, half weight bearing, no weight bearing, 30 N and 50 N were measured. Results: The photography method did not show a significant difference in the amount of piston movement between the socket and the stump. However, the satisfaction level of the participants with the pin-lock suspension system was higher than with the plunge cylinder. Conclusion: The use of a plunger-cylinder suspension system can be useful for below-the-knee amputations with a low activity level.","PeriodicalId":476072,"journal":{"name":"Function and disability journal","volume":"93 18","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138957720","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: Eight subjects diagnosed with Broca’s aphasia and eight normal speakers participated in this study. The subjects produced six words (/ bâd / - / pâ / - / tâb / - / dâs / - / kâr / and / gâz /). The samples were analyzed using PRAAT and the F2 transition was measured for these words. F2 values were compared to the data available in the literature. Results: Since the data distribution was abnormal in this study, the Mann-Whitney U test was applied. The results of this study show that the mean of the second formant transition in healthy people and people with aphasia are significantly different from each other in the words /Bâd/ and /Kâr/ (P<0.05), in which the mean of the second formant transition in both words was higher in the group of people with aphasia compared to healthy people. The results also showed that the mean of the second-formant transition in these six words is significantly different and higher in the group of aphasic people compared to the group of healthy people (P<0.05). Conclusion: In patients with Broca’s aphasia, the F2 value was higher than normal speakers. The nature of Broca’s aphasia suggests that subjects with Broca’s aphasia show higher F2 values. Also, the focus on Broca’s aphasia indicates difficulties in applying secondary articulation to a sufficient extent. The results of these studies are likely clinically applicable in particular to improving assessment approaches and therapeutic programs for Persian speakers with Broca’s aphasia.","PeriodicalId":476072,"journal":{"name":"Function and disability journal","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135831133","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of these injuries is forward head posture (FHP). The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of the presence of FHP and its severity on the students’ hearing thresholds. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 55 volunteer students participated. All subjects completed a questionnaire containing general questions and specialized questions in the field of hearing risk factors. Side-view pictures were taken of each person. After selecting three photos, the size of the craniovertebral angle was determined using the MB Ruler software. The mean of the three sizes obtained was used in statistical analysis. Audiometry and tympanometry were performed. Results: Out of 31 women and 24 men, 24 women (77.41%) and 21 men (87.5%) had FHP. In women, the number of severe FHP was twice that of men. No statistically significant difference was observed between men and women suffering from FHP alone and according to its classification. In this study, no statistically significant difference was observed between FHP and its classification with hearing thresholds. Conclusion: In this study, most students had FHP (81.8%). Considering that the volunteers are students and are faced with the factors affecting the occurrence of FHP, the existence of a large number of students with this condition is not surprising, and it can be concluded that this condition does not affect the young students’ hearing.","PeriodicalId":476072,"journal":{"name":"Function and disability journal","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135831407","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
