Situating this corpus of tourism studies scientific discourses within the larger crisis of social science, the paper exposes through discourse analysis two poles of arguments on (re)thinking tourism or (re)inventing tourism. In the continuity of the debate between pro-growth-industry prone and pro social-community prone vision of tourism that was already happening before the pandemic, the debate on tourism during and after the pandemic is challenging the fundamentals of tourism – (re)think; and finds ways to make tourism recover-(re)invent, while not considering the possibility of no tourism. The analysis identified that while there is opposition between those two poles, there is an overlap at the confrontation of (re)think and (re)invent. This overlap doesn't solve opposition and the risk of fragmentations of the field of tourism studies, but show some possibilities of a symbiotic cohabitation.","PeriodicalId":47549,"journal":{"name":"Tourism Recreation Research","volume":"43 1","pages":"535 - 546"},"PeriodicalIF":4.2,"publicationDate":"2023-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81305050","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article considers that the richest part of the tourist experience belongs to the realm of ‘free time’. There is evidence of the importance of free time and leisure in indigenous societies, and to justify that the common-sense view of leisure activities should be confronted. Most literature on indigenous voices in tourism studies identifies the potential of indigenous ideas to contribute to Western/European values of resilience, sustainability and environmental justice. However, such values are employed in the name of modernization and neoliberalism which are taken for granted as values of civilization, but are not so in reality. Thus, this article explores anthropological and indigenous bibliographic productions from Latin America and interviews with indigenous people located in Northeast Brazil to produce a genealogy of leisure, based on 'cultural anthropophagy'. Violence, racism and fear emerged as structural elements of the Western development choice. Tourism studies could further examine leisure as a means to inform contemporary development policies and contribute toward a better life in society, relatively free from such structural ills.","PeriodicalId":47549,"journal":{"name":"Tourism Recreation Research","volume":"34 1","pages":"547 - 557"},"PeriodicalIF":4.2,"publicationDate":"2023-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77699861","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Furthermore, this study also intends to identify the main strategies used by PwVD to overcome the barriers encountered in rural destinations. A triangulation of qualitative methods was used to collect and analyse data, comprising various online forums and blogs posts related to the tourism experiences of PwVD, together with fifteen semi-structured interviews conducted with Portuguese PwVD. The results reveal that PwVD find rural destinations compelling and that they look for sensorial stimuli in nature as a means for self-development and relaxation, while the lack of public transport and accessible information dissuades PwVD from seeking rural tourism experiences. These constraints are often overcome with the use of various smartphone apps, the aid of travel companions, or the help of residents. Based on the results obtained in this study, a set of guidelines is proposed to improve the level of accessibility of rural tourism destinations, contributing to the empowerment of PwVD.","PeriodicalId":47549,"journal":{"name":"Tourism Recreation Research","volume":"36 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":4.2,"publicationDate":"2023-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77272688","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The increasing demand for wheelchair tourists to visit natural destinations, the barriers while travelling, and the inclusivity of tourism are the main motivations of this study. While previous studies have investigated accessibility in tourism, they have rarely focused on inclusive tourism, especially from wheelchair tourists’ perspective. Driven by social constructivism theory, this research presents the results of the experiences of Indonesian wheelchair tourists in natural destinations by utilising the exclusion-inclusion and critical theory. In this emancipatory disability research, snowball sampling was employed to conduct semi-structured interviews with ten wheelchair users, and the empirical materials were thematically analysed. The findings revealed that participants were excited about travelling, but the barriers made wheelchair tourists more selective in choosing natural destinations. Inclusivity was perceived to be an issue that required the achievement of a cultural shift. While accessibility was deemed necessary, service and concern from tourism providers and other tourists were crucial at the lower experience level during travel. A ‘friend in tourism’ was reported as necessary to push toward inclusivity and equality in the tourism industry to ensure a better future.","PeriodicalId":47549,"journal":{"name":"Tourism Recreation Research","volume":"206 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":4.2,"publicationDate":"2023-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80415789","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
