The first aim is to consider the psychoanalytic concept of identification. What <i>kind</i> of concept or group of concepts is this; in which respects is it radical in reconfiguring psychological theory; and how far might we separate notions of receptive and projective identification? The author's second aim is to pursue the implications for understanding human development and psychopathology. The author illustrates how relatively neglected forms of identification play pivotal roles at different levels of communicative functioning, as well as shape seemingly disparate domains of early development-a story that is both informed by, and may inform, current psychoanalytic theory.</p>","PeriodicalId":47403,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association","volume":" ","pages":"30651261471852"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2026-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148888833","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The author contrasts this revealed—as opposed to disclosed—love with Freud’s emphasis on transference and infantile sexuality, arguing that focusing solely on these aspects can neglect other critical dimensions. Following a clinical reverie of Vermeer’s painting, “Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window,” the text examines how Bion’s “other love” can operate in the therapeutic setting. The painting is displayed both before and after its controversial restoration revealing a hidden Eros figure that now stands as a solemn reminder of both our need for love’s obscure nature and its revelations. The author suggests that Bion uses a term to designate a bond functioning in the unconscious emotional <jats:italic toggle=\"yes\">dark places in common</jats:italic> between the analytic couple as a small group, acting to facilitate one’s search of existing and process of becoming. Clinical vignettes are used to try to illustrate this process of revelation and how a hidden, <jats:italic toggle=\"yes\">eternally unfolding love</jats:italic> can have the power to summon both patient and analyst toward a more profound existence.","PeriodicalId":47403,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association","volume":"36 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.2,"publicationDate":"2026-08-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148809936","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
