However, despite its transformative potential, existing literature has dedicated little attention to its exploration. Our research endeavours to shed light on the concept of terrestrial space tourism destinations. We crafted a comprehensive theoretical model that forms the bedrock for a deeper understanding of this unique and specialized niche. We employ a qualitative approach, drawing from an array of sources, including interviews with industry experts and key informants. Findings uncovered several critical factors that need to be considered when establishing a competitive and sustainable terrestrial space tourism destination, namely: safety, residents’ acceptance, infrastructures, and education. Furthermore, we introduce six research gaps that can inspire future investigations in this dynamically evolving field.KEYWORDS: Conceptual modeldestination product developmentspace industryterrestrial space tourism Author ContributionsThe paper is the result of the work of the whole group, however, it is possible to identify a manager for the different parts according to the following scheme. However, there is a lack of research that investigates vegan tourism in terms of destination development. Hence, this study examines the development of a destination as vegan-friendly under two research questions: (1) what are the aspects of a vegan-friendly destination, and (2) how it is developed. The research examines the specific case of Didim, Turkey, which declared itself vegan-friendly in 2017. Online and on-site interviews are conducted with tourism professionals, local business owners, volunteers from NGOs, and residents. The research sheds light into how the development process of Didim as vegan-friendly occurred. The findings also reveal the aspects of a vegan-friendly destination, including adherence to the vegan philosophy, availability a vegan cuisine, addressed needs of vegan visitors, abolition or reduction of animal exploitation, complementary social interactions and a favourable attitude of the local population.KEYWORDS: Vegan-friendly destinationsustainable destination developmentdestination planningfood-based tourismvegan festivalsstakeholder collaboration Disclosure statementNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the author(s).Ethical approvalThe research on which this article is based has received the ethical approval of the Boğaziçi University Institutional Review Board in Social Sciences and Humanities (for human subjects research—approval: SBB-EAK 2021/82).","PeriodicalId":47312,"journal":{"name":"Tourism Planning & Development","volume":"83 12","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135868823","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The PNAL is currently in the process of implementing its co-management model, abandoning the old centralized top-down model, and aiming for a more sustainable development of the protected area. Recognizing the key role of stakeholders in sustainable tourism development in protected areas, this study examines how PNAL stakeholders perceive various topics related to sustainable tourism and local development. To this end, 19 PNAL stakeholders participated in two focus groups that were conducted to collect the primary data. NVivo software was used for content analysis and mapping stakeholders’ perceptions. The results indicate that even though the stakeholders believe that the protected area has great tourism potential and that the park’s residents are open to tourism, public authority conflicts and the lack of infrastructure and services to support tourism present obstacles to a sustainable tourism development.KEYWORDS: Sustainable tourismprotected areasstakeholders’ perceptionslocal developmentfocus groupAlvão Natural Park Disclosure statementNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the author(s).Additional informationFundingThis work was supported by European Funds of the FEDER Norte2020, Portugal 2020, within project «NORTE-01-0145-FEDER-000079», and by National Funds of the FCT – Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology within the projects «UIDB/03182/2020» and «UID/ECO/03182/2019».","PeriodicalId":47312,"journal":{"name":"Tourism Planning & Development","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135316093","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A two-round Delphi study was undertaken in the so-called Visegrád countries: Czechia, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia using a questionnaire which was sent to 28 carefully chosen experts. Empirical results showed that five main components within health tourism experiencescapes need to be addressed: (1) infrastructural improvements and quality services for new, often self-paying or international guests, (2) creating physical health restoration and wellness treatments which are growing in popularity, especially among younger and foreign guests, (3) the importance of recognizing the needs of different user groups, separating spaces and targeting specific segments, (4) constant monitoring of customer experience quality, (5) creating a hygienic environment for guests (especially during and post-COVID). The findings help to provide recommendations for therapeutic health facilities and balneology spas that are shifting from state-subsidized health tourism to wellness experience development for paying guests.KEYWORDS: Health tourismexperiencescapesbalneology spaswellnessVisegrád 4 countriesDelphi study Disclosure statementNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the author(s).Additional informationFundingThis work was supported by Visegrad Fund [Grant Number The WellSpaV4 project no. 22010060.].","PeriodicalId":47312,"journal":{"name":"Tourism Planning & Development","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135206092","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Over the years, there has been a noticeable increase in uncertainty as a result of various crises (e.g., COVID-19 pandemic, economic crisis etc) influencing the global travel and tourism industry. Even so, international tourism flows continued to grow amidst the increasing uncertainty and whilst facing new emerging crises such as the Ukraine-Russia conflict. Uncertainty and disruption are not new to the tourism industry; in fact, tourism has proven to be rather resilient to negative events that impacted tourist demand and operations and, eventually, managed to recover, adapt and innovate. It is, thus, not surprising that resilience and innovation studies have adopted a crisis recovery angle, focusing on value-creating strategies and practices. Relevant literature suggests that success in tourism lies in the innovative stance employed by stakeholders as well as the resilience shown by destinations and companies alike at times of uncertainty. Externalities that impact global tourism causing an uncertain environment are not only yielding challenges and threats but also bear opportunities that allow policymakers and industry practitioners to rethink of tourism planning and development. This special issue aims to deepen understanding on innovation and resilience aspects in tourism by following a multi-disciplinary approach that uncovers the internal and external dynamics that affect the evolution, planning and development of tourism at times of uncertainty. Judging by the collection of articles published in this special issue which present rich research findings that carry theoretical and practical implications, it seems that the aim has been successfully achieved. The special issue comprises of eight articles examining resilience and innovation in hospitality and tourism settings, showcasing findings from a variety of study contexts both in terms of sector and geographical location. The first article in the special issue, written by Saiful Islam, Mishkatul Kabir and Kamrul Hassan and titled “Resilience strategies of tour operators during the uncertainty of COVID19: Evidence from Bangladesh”, discusses resilience strategies that tour operators in Bangladesh adopted to withstand the challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. The authors’ study findings highlight the importance of resilience in tourism settings, identifying strategies of external agencies as well as tour operators as influential on the resilience-building goal of tourism businesses. Hence, resilience presents itself as a multi-dimensional construct and relevant research needs to capture this complexity. In their paper, Islam et al. offer a three-dimensional mechanism that lists three broader categories of resilience-building strategies: a) innate resilience, b) internally-induced resilience and c) externally-induced resilience. The study concerns the examination of the derived chaordic (chaos vs order) systems formulating the tourism crisis communications in metropolitan areas, with special reference to the city of Athens. The research uses a sample of 400 adult permanent residents of Athens, and investigates the simple conditions of government trust, security, destination image, competition, information technology, and destination safety by using fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis. The findings reveal five sufficient configurations (destination characteristics; destination safety; destination competitiveness; state information management; IT and ICT destination dependency) that can lead the destination to the efficient employment of crisis management communications.
