Both projects focused on participatory communication and media production: “Media Lab for Active Media Production” and a “Social Communication Workshop”. The purpose of this paper is to share best practices in capacity building as well as the outcomes that emerged from the exercises. The learning approaches and outcomes that emerged may be relevant for future CDSC programs. The approach sought to strengthen of future ‘communicators’ as key catalysts of development and community social impact. {"title":"Adaptive Management for Ecosystem Services Across the Wildland-Urban\u0000 Interface","authors":"Robin Kundis Craig, J. B. Ruhl","doi":"10.2139/SSRN.3407579","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2139/SSRN.3407579","url":null,"abstract":"Managing the wildland-urban interface (WUI) is a widely-recognized land use problem plagued by a fractured geography of land parcels, management jurisdictions, and governance mandates and objectives. People who work in this field have suggested a variety of approaches to managing this interface, from informal governance to contracting to insurance. To date, however, none of these scholars have fully embraced the dynamism, uncertainty, and complexity of the WUI — that is, its status as a complex adaptive system. In focusing almost exclusively on the management of this interface to control wildfire, this scholarship largely ignores the factor that rampant wildfire is itself the product of incursions into important ecosystem services on both sides of the interface. In many cases, people tend to expand out towards the wildland not just for economics (cheaper housing) but also because of a suite of ecosystem services that are readily accessible at the interface, including aesthetics, a cleaner environment, and recreational opportunities. As the wildfire problem amply demonstrates, these settlers then become upset when other aspects of ecosystem function invade their lives, but those invasions include not just wildfire disasters but also more pernicious problems such as diseases, allergens, and wildlife. As such, development at the WUI can create a multifaceted desire to control several \"undesirable\" aspects of ecosystem function while simultaneously promoting the ecosystem services that residents desire, complicating land use management on both sides of a line that is itself often moving or transforming into a transition or buffer zone. To focus solely on wildfire, in other words, may oversimplify an increasingly complex management problem with significant policy implications. \u0000 \u0000While we cannot and will not attempt to resolve all of these policy issues in this article, we do propose that adaptive management may provide a mechanism for dealing with the complexity of managing changing ecosystem functions and services at the WUI, even when — and perhaps especially because — the private lands and wildlands are usually subject to different land use regimes. We begin with an overview of adaptive management, then discuss the hard but common case of fractured landscape management. Ghorbani, Giangiacomo Bravo","doi":"10.5334/ijc.959","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.5334/ijc.959","url":null,"abstract":"We present an analysis of regulatory activities in historical commons offering a unique picture of their long-term institutional dynamics. The analysis took into account almost 3,800 regulatory activities in eighteen European commons in two countries across seven centuries. Despite differences in time and space, we found a shared pattern where an initial, highly-dynamic institutional-definition phase was followed by a relatively long period of stability and a final burst of activities, possibly in an attempt to respond to new challenges. In addition, most of the initial regulatory activities focused on resource use, while towards the end other activities prevailed. Debate generated during a bill treatment on Voluntary Interruption of Pregnancy in 2018, implied a strong mobilization of public opinion in a dispute between \"pro-choice\" and \"pro-life\" positions. All this within a techno-communication ecosystem where social software platforms coexist with mass media. Presentation is developed in four areas: 1. evolution of the article; 2. editions and editors profile; 3. discussions and controversies; 4. sources usage for content validation. Por fin, observamos que la conversacion online puede politizarse tambien a partir de su entrelazamiento con experiencias offline y de la reelaboracion discursiva de la existencia de los sujetos que conversan EnglishThe article proposes an integrative approach to online conversational spaces and their political dimension, based on the articulation of various institutional and media actors involved in the development of public debate in Cuba. Therefore, the concept of politicization of online conversations is discussed, in order to highlight the interrelation between dimensions of context and discourse in those interactions. Thus, we analyze conversations on migration issues in Cubadebate between 2013 and 2017; complementing the analysis with interviews made to directors and journalists of the site. In this way, we show how this communicative space functions simultaneously as a discussion forum, a channel of communication with the government and a vehicle for discussing the news agenda of the media. Por esta razon, recibieron la denominacion de revistas contraculturales, subterraneas o underground. A partir de 1978 y durante la denominada transicion argentina, dichas publicaciones polemizaron con aquellas intervenciones que, desde el exilio, identificaron la produccion cultural de quienes permanecieron desde la inaccion, la quietud y el silencio. El exilio y la permanencia implicaron la construccion de redes de solidaridad en torno a padecer y denunciar los mecanismos de censura, prohibicion y persecucion del regimen militar. Sin embargo, tambien se establecio una serie de tensiones entre el “adentro” y el “afuera”, que nos proponemos reponer en este articulo EnglishDuring the last Argentine dictatorship (1976-1983), a group of cultural magazines challenged the restrictions imposed by hegemonic military power through their proposal of politic and cultural intervention, their place in the symbolic market and the recovery of traditions that contended against the so-called official culture, among other things. Consequently, they came to be designated as countercultu-ral or underground magazines. Since 1978 and during the so-called Argentine transition, those magazines engaged in a dispute with those manifestations that, form the exile, equated their cultural production of those people who remained with the inaction, the stillness, and the silent. Between the exile and those who remained in the country, a solidarity network was established based on the suffering and denunciation of the military regime’s censorship, prohibition, and persecution. Consequently, specific management strategies should be applied to reduce the emission and to serve future generations. Also, mitigation of climate change in the peatlands agriculture should also be given priority. This paper explores the existing farming action on climate change mitigation, and strategies of degraded peatlands management to mitigate climate change in term of reducing GHG emission. Existing condition of mitigation action by farmers in their farming systems; rice, rubber and oil palm, were reviewed through a farm household survey. Then, development strategies for climate change mitigation through sustainable degraded peatlands management were discussed through Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and in-depth interview with experts from concerned research institutions and universities through morphological analysis. The finding of this research shows that farmer’s existing climate change mitigation actions pertain to land preparation, water management, and soil management in their farming system.
