Todd","doi":"10.3366/burns.2024.0101","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.3366/burns.2024.0101","url":null,"abstract":"The 1808 American Burns ‘edition’, unrecorded in earlier Burns scholarship, which is described here from the copy in Mr Todd’s collection. is significant both for its nineteenth century owner, the American politician and orator Edward Everett (1794–1865), and for its strange printing history. Everett’s bookplate and a manuscript inscription show that the Todd copy was presented to Everett by a young American poet Epes Sargent (1813–1880), and together these suggest an under-documented interest in Burns in America outside the Scottish diaspora before the 1840s, when Burns’s work would be championed by Emerson, Frederick Douglass and others. The title page states the edition was published in Boston, Massachusetts, but the book’s irregular pagination shows that it was printed in Scotland, not Boston, and was made up of sheets of an 1807 Scottish edition. The American title page (a close but not exact match with the Scottish one), whether printed in Edinburgh or Boston, disguised its Scottish origin during a period of strong protectionism in the American book-trade; if the title page were printed in Scotland, the 1808 Boston Burns would seem to be the only known early nineteenth century example of such an arrangement.","PeriodicalId":472348,"journal":{"name":"Burns chronicle","volume":"69 11","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140282469","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Utilising newly uncovered source materials, it investigates individuals concerned with the creation and ownership of the slides on Burns, including the firm of George Washington Wilson, and also examines the history of their presentation through the example of C. J. Parker, exploring their significance, determining what type of Burns was being propagated to Parker's audiences, and analysing how publically presented readings of Burns therein were constrained by dominant editorial interpretations from the period. Research has discovered that the Burns slides collection is the most complete, publicly held collection in Scotland. This article illustrates the collection's significant cultural and financial value as a fascinating relic of Burns's cultural memory and of early Scottish photography.","PeriodicalId":472348,"journal":{"name":"Burns chronicle","volume":"32 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140278224","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The stories, and even the names, of the Black people of that period (servants and tradesmen) are typically more ephemeral than those of Burns and his friends and patrons, but it would be wrong to assume that there were no Black people living and working in Ayr and its environs in Burns's day. While the Black population across Scotland was small (commentators suggest around seventy individuals against some fifteen thousand in England & Wales), contemporary records show that over a dozen lived and worked in Ayrshire. While there is no concrete evidence in the Poet's writings, this study shows that it is highly likely that Burns saw some of these people on the streets, that he met the biracial children of the manumitted Black man Scipio Kennedy, and that he was present at the baptism of a Black man, John Cartwright, in Mauchline Kirk in 1784.","PeriodicalId":472348,"journal":{"name":"Burns chronicle","volume":"111 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140271099","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its main subject is an April 1787 map of Ellisland executed by the surveyor William McCartney for the landowner Patrick Miller of Dalswinton in anticipation of what would become Burns’s tenancy. The article examines McCartney’s map alongside a later 1817 survey map and other supporting evidence, identifying temporal layers on the 1787 map that capture Burns’s activities as an improving tenant farmer at Ellisland. It further positions the 1787 map within the memorialisation and literary tourism that evolved around Burns in the nineteenth century.","PeriodicalId":472348,"journal":{"name":"Burns chronicle","volume":"23 22","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140269305","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
