Każda z istniejących kultur ma swój własny, stworzony przez siebie model wartości. Fundament tego modelu tworzą najstarsze warstwy języka, jego podstawowy rdzeń. Każda wartość, która wyłoniła się z filozoficzno-religijnej warstwy kultury, jest kodowana za pomocą znaczeń językowych. Kody te stanowią rdzeń wartości kultury. Obecny artykuł dotyczy tego, w jakim stopniu kody wartości jednej kultury wpływają na kody innej kultury. W artykule omawiane są różne kulturowe modele wartości oraz rola języka w tworzeniu ich rdzenia.","PeriodicalId":471680,"journal":{"name":"Półrocznik Językoznawczy Tertium","volume":"6 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139959172","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Translators facing this task may encounter several issues stemming from cross-cultural differences in the style and structure of academic texts. While linguistic errors alone rarely result in rejections, deviations from Anglo–American conventions in scientific writing may even lead to the reviewers questioning the author’s competence as a scientist. For example, there are significant differences between two intellectual traditions: Teutonic, which has influenced the Polish style of academic communication, and Saxonic, which has shaped Anglo–American standards. As a result, introductions written by Polish scholars often do not meet the requirements of English-medium international journals. This may inadvertently place Polish authors in a disadvantaged position. It is therefore important that translators should know how to approach these differences when they encounter them. Drawing on existing literature, this paper calls for an inquiry into the role of the translator in these circumstances, including the scope of their responsibilities and strategies for dealing with potential problems.","PeriodicalId":471680,"journal":{"name":"Półrocznik Językoznawczy Tertium","volume":"8 13","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139959353","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, designing automated detection models for such offensive content remains complex, particularly in languages with limited publicly available data. To address this issue, our research collaborates with the Wykop.pl web service to fine-tune a model using genuine content that has been banned by professional moderators. In this paper, we focus on the Polish language and discuss the notion of datasets and annotation frameworks, presenting our stylometric analysis of Wykop.pl content to identify morpho-syntactic structures that are commonly applied in cyberbullying and hate speech. By doing so, we contribute to the ongoing discussion on offensive language and hate speech in sociolinguistic studies, emphasizing the need to consider user-generated online content.","PeriodicalId":471680,"journal":{"name":"Półrocznik Językoznawczy Tertium","volume":"2 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139959333","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Są to dyskursy tworzone odpowiednio przez profesjonalistów jak i przez laików, którzy opisują konkretne przypadki choroby. Badanie to skupia się na językowej konstrukcji takich elementów jak choroba czy pacjent oraz konsekwencji konkretnych wyborów językowych ukazujących doświadczenie choroby autorstwa różnych osób, w konkretnych kontekstach oraz różnymi kanałami, przeznaczonych dla różnych czytelników. O ile istnieje szereg badań dotyczących nowych jednostek leksykalnych oraz tych, które zyskały nowe znaczenie/nową rzeczywistość do opisu w języku angielskim, wydaje się, iż porównanie dwóch dyskursów dotyczących COVID-19 tworzonych przez profesjonalistów jak i laików w języku polskim nie zostało dotychczas przeprowadzone. Dane w niniejszym badaniu stanowią polskojęzyczne artykuły naukowe dotyczące koronawirusa oraz wpisy na forum internetowym o tej samej tematyce. Zastosowana metodologia to analiza z perspektywy jakościowej, uzupełniona o elementy badania korpusu wspartego komputerowo i odnosi się gramatyki dyskursu o podstawach kognitywnych oraz funkcjonalnych. Zwraca się w niej uwagę na tekstowe wyznaczniki pacjenta i choroby, oraz ich tekstowe uwarunkowania, które mogą się różnić w zależności od kontekstów, w których tworzone są teksty. Jak pokazują wyniki badania, obie grupy tekstów charakteryzują się innymi punktami ciężkości oraz użytymi środkami językowymi (np. słownictwo, frazy czy struktury dyskursywne), które odpowiadają za różny efekt końcowy językowej reprezentacji COVID-19.","PeriodicalId":471680,"journal":{"name":"Półrocznik Językoznawczy Tertium","volume":"5 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139959055","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The preliminary hypothesis is that sociolinguistic factors like bilingualism and L2 interference (attrition, as in de Leeuw, E., Chang, C. 2023) may have a decisive role in the process of sound perception and is based on the example of English-Czech/Slovak and English-Ukrainian loanword adaptation cases involving the phonemes /ɡ/, /h/, /ɦ/, and /x/: Czech and Slovak speakers adapt [h] as [ɦ] while Ukrainian speakers tend to adapt the same phoneme as [x] despite having /ɦ/ in their phonological inventory. This tendency seems to correlate with phonological attrition (L2 interference of Russian) and has been a topic of active discussions, especially so since the 2022 full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.\u0000 The research method is based on a questionnaire with audio samples containing both already existing and made-up proper names and words. Half of the test vocabulary units are designed to contain the chosen sounds, the rest of the units are represented by established, already existing, names, and units that do not contain the chosen sounds to provide a cover for the experiment. The respondents are asked to listen to the audio samples and write down the units as they hear them using Ukrainian alphabet. The respondents were provided with a fake description, and a fake goal of the experiment to exclude possible bias.","PeriodicalId":471680,"journal":{"name":"Półrocznik Językoznawczy Tertium","volume":"3 11","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139959037","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the article, I use semiotactics as the methodology developed on the basis of contemporary phonology (in particular, (mor)phonotactics, e. g. Dressler and Dziubalska-Kołaczyk 2006 inter alia) to examine salient asymmetries as markedness phenomena operating on a hieratic marker active both in the Judaic denomination and in Christianity ‒ the Stone Tablets. In particular, I focus on the semiotactic reflection of the markedness effects related to the presence of the analysed marker in Catholic churches. I establish several implicational cooccurrence restrictions and arrive at establishing several primes in the nano-structure of a hieratic sign. The basis for the analysis is the digital documentation of the representation of the Stone Tablets in Christian churches which I collected in various European countries in the years 2010‒2022.\u0000The supplementary illustrative materials are available here in the form of a recorded presentation.","PeriodicalId":471680,"journal":{"name":"Półrocznik Językoznawczy Tertium","volume":"7 22","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139959513","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, research has shown that these students face various challenges in integrating into their new academic environment. This study seeks to examine the challenges related to language use, specifically academic English, at the University of Coventry. Despite their previous education in English, these students encounter difficulties with the accent, speed, and intonation of lecturers from diverse linguistic backgrounds. To better understand the challenges international students, specifically Nigerian students, face while studying in the UK, a semi-structured interview was conducted with six students at Coventry University. The participants were chosen from different geographical locations in Nigeria and represented undergraduate and postgraduate students. The research explores their initial struggles and gradual adjustments to comprehending lectures. The findings reveal that while linguistic challenges are significant, students adapt without requiring extra language classes due to continuous exposure and utilisation of various learning resources.","PeriodicalId":471680,"journal":{"name":"Półrocznik Językoznawczy Tertium","volume":"1 8","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139959340","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
