Nguyen","doi":"10.21660/2023.108.3862","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.21660/2023.108.3862","url":null,"abstract":": Preloading with surcharge is the most common technique of ground improvement used in highway engineering. At the end of the preloading period, the surcharge load is removed, and most or all of the primary settlement and some of the secondary settlement would have occurred. The soil beneath the embankment becomes over-consolidated, resulting in the elimination or a huge reduction in post-construction settlement. When pre-compression is applied to a relatively free-draining material, consolidation times are short, and therefore primary settlements can be effectively controlled by using a preload equal to the final load over a limited period of time. The subsequent movements associated with unloading/reloading will be small and will occur rapidly. In these cases, the main source of long-term displacements is likely to be secondary compression settlements. In this paper, a laboratory investigation of one-dimensional consolidation of clayey soils was carried out and a formula has been proposed to compute the post-construction settlement of low embankment. The results show that the settlement increases with the increasing amplitude of the cyclic load, and the effectiveness of surcharge preloading depends on the difference between the surcharge and the amplitude of the cyclic load.","PeriodicalId":47135,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of GEOMATE","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2023-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47025478","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since the bark of driftwood peels off during flow, elucidating the bark peeling process will lead to the estimation of the source of driftwood. It is also considered to be useful for river management. There is a study of the past that examined the situation of the detachment using the branch. However, the scale of the driftwood model had a problem. It had a small real model for a scale. In this study, a driftwood model was created using the bark of grown cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) and fixed in a waterway for peeling experiments. As a result, when fresh water and earth and sand were circulated, the bark peeling rate increased in the order of upstream side, side surface, and downstream side due to the collision of earth and sand. Furthermore, the separation rate on the riverbed side was higher than that on the water's surface side. In the case that only freshwater circulated, it was revealed that the fluid power did not influence the bark exfoliation. Observation of the progress of the exfoliation confirmed two cases, exfoliation produced by the friction with sand and lump of the bark exfoliates.","PeriodicalId":47135,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of GEOMATE","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2023-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42415669","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Notably, the incidents of constructing the underground of a high-rise building such as the excavation collapsing, subsidence of the ground around the deep excavation, diaphragm walls move significantly beyond the allowable value, etc. Construction solutions, which can stabilize the deep excavation and reduce the displacement of diaphragm walls, are very important and extremely necessary. The paper presents the effect of the increasing load from the strut system by hydraulic jack (active support system) to the Barrette wall displacement during the construction of the deep excavation. In this study, a numerical investigation was performed to evaluate the effect of the active support system on the Barrette wall displacement corresponding to each case of 2 to 3 basements for each type of natural ground in Hanoi city. In particular, the Finite Element Model (FEM) simulated the construction sequence of deep excavation with different forces from struts has been compared. The analysis results show that the active support system is an effective solution to stabilize the deep excavation and reduce the horizontal displacement of the Barrette wall, especially the top and the middle of the Barrette wall.","PeriodicalId":47135,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of GEOMATE","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2023-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41393328","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Top-drive Boring Hole (TBH) method, which has a machine height of 4.5m, is often used. The Boring Hole (BH) pile method can handle narrow spaces and low overhead clearances better than the TBH method. However, because the BH pile method is a direct circulation method, mud cakes easily form on the hole walls, and slime tends to accumulate at the pile tip. Such challenges related to the construction method, bearing capacity and settlement need to be resolved for pile construction in narrow urban spaces. Pile construction in narrow urban spaces and for existing structures to strengthen the seismic resistance is subjected to constraints on the construction site and process. Therefore, a method for soil-cement composite pile construction was developed that uses a compact mechanical agitator for pile foundations of lightweight structures. In this study, static compression load tests on soil-cement composite piles that were constructed with the developed ground improvement construction method were carried out to evaluate the vertical bearing characteristics. Furthermore, it was evaluated the performance of vertical bearing characteristics on the soil-cement composite piles to compare the evaluation method as shown in the design specifications in Japan.","PeriodicalId":47135,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of GEOMATE","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2023-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47239908","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
