Here, an exact transformation defined by using the Betti theorem, is invoked for the analysis of the stochastic response of the elastic structures wetted by the wall pressure distribution due to a turbulent boundary layer. This kind of response can be severely challenging for both the numerical approaches and the experimental measurement techniques. The transformation, named VOODOO (a versatile offset operator for the discrete observation of objects), is here used for predicting the stochastic responses in two different plates. The method allows connecting the degrees of freedom (in a discrete number of points) of two completely different systems through a matrix operator: if the excitation/response pints are located/evaluated at the points used for building this matrix, the transformation is exact. In the present case, the stochastic pressure loads act on the whole systems and thus the computed responses will be associated to errors: the analysis of these errors is the actual focus.","PeriodicalId":471330,"journal":{"name":"NOISE-CON ... proceedings","volume":"33 12","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135726957","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An important parameter for quantifying vibration transmission across junctions is the coupling loss factor commonly used in Statistical Energy Analysis (SEA). A hybrid deterministicdiffuse approach is adopted here to calculate coupling loss factors across finite junctions. With this approach some parts of the structure are modelled as diffuse subsystems, for example the plates connected to the junction, while other parts, for example a connecting element, can be modelled as a deterministic subsystem. In this way the finite size and structural details of the junction are considered. The hybrid deterministic-diffuse approach is compared to Monte-Carlo simulations of a detailed finite element model where masses are randomly distributed over the plates connected to the junction and the ensemble average coupling loss factor is computed. In this validation, both direct coupling between plates and coupling through intermediate elements are considered. The coupling loss factors from both methods agree well at higher frequencies, where the diffuse field assumption is valid and no strong coupling between the out-of-plane subsystems is present.","PeriodicalId":471330,"journal":{"name":"NOISE-CON ... proceedings","volume":"32 2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135728282","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its derivation assumes adiabatic and reversible, i.e., dissipation-free, wave propagation. Sound waves in fluids are, however, subject to viscous and thermal losses. These losses originate from viscous friction and heat conduction, leading to the formation of acoustic boundary layers. Considering these effects becomes significant in setups with acoustic cavities of similar dimension as the boundary layers. Recently, boundary element methods (BEM) accounting for the viscothermal dissipation have been proposed. These methods limit the discretization to the surface of the fluid domain and require significantly fewer degrees of freedom than comparable finite element models. However, the BEM coefficient matrices are fully populated, resulting in high computational costs and storage requirements. This study develops a new BEM formulation for acoustics in viscothermal fluids that uses the fast multipole method - a low-rank approximation technique based on a hierarchical subdivision of the computational domain - to alleviate this shortcoming. It is shown that the fast viscothermal BEM improves the algorithmic complexity over the conventional formulation, reducing both the memory requirements and solution time. The results indicate good scalability of the method making it feasible for larger applications such as acoustic metamaterials.","PeriodicalId":471330,"journal":{"name":"NOISE-CON ... proceedings","volume":"33 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135725647","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, realizing a high-Q cavity resonator is a challenge because of low acoustic impedance contrast between liquids and solids. In our previous studies, we surround the cavity resonator with phononic crystal layers that provide a strong cavity resonance within the phononic band gap. The quality factor drastically depends on the geometry of the metamaterial lattice. Therefore, the main aim of this study is to find an optimal material layout of the solid domain around the cavity by employing topology optimization. We formulate the optimization problem as maximization of the Q-factor of the cavity resonance. We consider the sensor as a fully coupled vibroacoustic system, taking into account material losses and frequency-dependent material properties. Meanwhile, microscale approaches allow the prediction of transport parameters based exclusively on a periodic structure's unit cell geometry. Here, we compare these methods to predict the characteristic impedance of additively manufactured porous structures. We use the microscale approach to estimate the geometry's transport parameters, then predict the characteristic properties using the Johnson-Champoux-Allard (JCA) model. We measure the acoustic properties of the printed structures using a normal incidence impedance tube and estimate the transport parameters using an inverse characterization approach. We use the twothickness method as a macroscale approach to predict the characteristic properties from the measured surface impedances of two sample thicknesses. Finally, we compare these characteristic prediction methods. Our results show that the inverse characterization and twothickness methods offer the closest match to the measured values at low frequencies.","PeriodicalId":471330,"journal":{"name":"NOISE-CON ... proceedings","volume":"35 11","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135725918","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A dish-shaped two-dimensional acoustic black hole plate is proposed in order to reduce the possibility of the structural damage happened in conventional embedded ABH in the centre of the plate. The dish-shaped acoustic black hole plate only cuts ABH on the edge. The finite element method is often used to establish the model of acoustic black hole plates. However, it is high cost and low efficiency in computation. A semi-analytical theoretical model of the disc-shaped acoustic black hole plate based on Gaussian expansion method is established in order to improve computation efficiency. Meanwhile, the shape function filtering method is proposed to solve the problem of non-convergence when Gaussian expansion method is used to model a non-rectangular plate. A finite element model of the disc-shaped acoustic black hole plate is established and used to verify the accuracy of the proposed semi-analytical theoretical model. The results show that the dish-shaped acoustic black hole plate has excellent energy accumulation effect and can be used further as Dynamic Vibration Absorber (DVA) to reduce the vibration of host structure.","PeriodicalId":471330,"journal":{"name":"NOISE-CON ... proceedings","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135726943","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Both theoretical and experimental analysis of sound and vibration attenuation in a Mindlin plate with masses attached in a periodic \"supercell\" pattern are performed. Distances between the neighbouring masses within the supercell are not restricted to be equal, and masses themselves can be non-identical. By modelling the masses as point attachments, analytical expressions are developed for predicting the dispersion relation and frequency bandgaps of the plate. It is shown that wave propagation in two primary (orthogonal) directions in the plate and the corresponding frequency bandgaps have the most pronounced effect on the sound transmission loss. Variation of the distances between the masses, or masses themselves, can lead to additional lower-frequency bandgaps. The effects of the frequency bandgaps on the sound transmission through the plate are validated by numerical analysis conducted using the wave and finite element method. Experimental testing in a transmission suite under diffuse field conditions of large-scale (2.4m by 1m) plates with periodically attached masses is conducted, showing benefits of utilizing multiple scattering to increase the sound transmission loss in the targeted region.","PeriodicalId":471330,"journal":{"name":"NOISE-CON ... proceedings","volume":"32 8","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135725655","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Electromagnetic negative stiffness elements can be used to design and fabricate quasi-zero-stiffness vibration isolators. Different combinations of permanent magnets and electromagnetic coils in attractive or repulsive configurations can lead to negative stiffness. The magnitude of the electromagnetic restoring force and negative stiffness is dependent upon many geometric and electromagnetic parameters and is controllable by adjusting the current in the electromagnetic coils. The present work compares the negative stiffness properties of three different configurations and provides a general guideline for selecting the appropriate configuration.
