A road traffic accident is one of the leading causes of injury and death in Nepal that has a great impact on the country’s economy. The identification of frequent road traffic crash spots and their causes are essential for the implementation of the most efficient countermeasures. Accident black spots are high-risk spots where numbers of accidents take place frequently and repeatedly. The study focused on the identification of black spots on the Mugling-Kotre section of the Prithivi highway of Nepal to provide knowledge for possible preventive measures for the improvement of road safety. The weighted severity index (WSI), prioritization index (PI), and focus group discussion have been performed to evaluate the safety status in the proposed area. The accident data were analyzed based on the weighted severity index (WSI), and the prioritization index (PI) was estimated by assigning a suitable weight to the factors contributing to an accident. Based on these results, six accident spots have been found critical regarding traffic safety. The result obtained from WSI and PI was further evaluated based on the focus group discussion so that essential safety measures could be implemented to enhance road safety.","PeriodicalId":471152,"journal":{"name":"Journal of engineering, technology and planning","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135879039","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a result, the application of Finite Element Analysis in geoengineering projects is limited. This research focuses on numerically examining the behavior of a pile in a sandy soil layer. The study employs different relationships to estimate soil parameters from standard penetration tests and simple lab tests. These derived parameters, required for the Mohr-Coulomb & Hardening Soil constitutive model and the linear elastic model of the pile, are implemented in the PLAXIS 3D software. This software is used to simulate the settlement of the pile in sandy soil incorporating factors like mesh density and soil-pile interaction. The results of the study reveal that employing a finer mesh size leads to more precise results. Additionally, an interface strength of 67% proves to be more accurate for this study. Furthermore, the correlation introduced by Papadopoulos (1982) exhibits a close relation with field settlement values. In contrast, other correlations either overestimate or underestimate the results. Moreover, the study conclude that Mohr-Coulomb constitutive model satisfactorily predicts the behavior of the pile for the study area.","PeriodicalId":471152,"journal":{"name":"Journal of engineering, technology and planning","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135826444","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study examines the connection between the built environment and walkability, utilizing Itahari chowk as a study area. This paper aims to quantify the degree of walkability in relation to built environment while comprehending how the built environment affects people’s walking habits and how aspects of walkability related to urban architecture are related to physical attributes. The study employs a thorough analysis of walkability coverage across four distinct spots within Itahari chowk using Gordon Cullen serial vision method. This method rooted in urban design principles evaluates four crucial qualities: Imageability, Enclosure, Transparency and Human Scale. To further refine the assessment, interview was conducted to gauge the perception of users. Respondents were asked to rank the urban design qualities based on their perceived importance and ranking data were used to determine weightage for each quality. By integrating the weighted evaluation criteria in the walkability coverage obtained through the serial vision method, a more accurate representation of actual walkability experience emerged. The findings obtained from theoretical method (serial vision method) and people’s perception (ranking method) were compared and discuss. The results of this analysis showed that people's perceptions of walkability were different from the theoretical method. The study will be beneficial to pedestrian design professionals and academic interested in this topic. Ultimately the general public will be benefit from more walkable and user-friendly street.","PeriodicalId":471152,"journal":{"name":"Journal of engineering, technology and planning","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135877992","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this regard, this research adopted exploratory and descriptive approach to investigate the perceived economic impacts of community-based ecotourism in the local communities of Annapurna Conservation Area (ACA) in Nepal. The settlements of Dhampus, Landruk and Ghandruk along the Annapurna Sanctuary Trail (AST) are considered as a case to critically examine the economic impacts of community-based ecotourism development on local residents both residing along the major trail (MT) and off the trail (OT) in the ACA. Multiple methods of data collection such as questionnaire survey with households, key informants interview, participant observation, informal discussion with local entrepreneurs and residents, and archival research have been conducted. Research findings showed that community-based ecotourism has provided extensive economic benefits to local people, however in a varying degree. It has provided economic benefits to local communities and enhanced local economy, however not all residents receive benefits equitably. People living along the MT (i.e. mostly the tourism entrepreneurs) receive higher economic benefits than that of OT (i.e. mostly the farmers). The farmers, low-wage employees, and marginalized community receive lowest benefits but largely influenced by the inflation and tourism impacts. In addition, there seem economic leakages, weak integration of local products into tourism system and inflation. This study stresses on the inclusive participation of local people in the planning and decision making of tourism development as well as sharing of benefits while also reducing the economic leakages and strengthening its linkages.","PeriodicalId":471152,"journal":{"name":"Journal of engineering, technology and planning","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135879037","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study is aimed at identifying the relation between infiltration rate and surface characteristics as well as rainfall rate in the Kaligandaki River basin of Nepal using Hydrologic Modelling System (HEC-HMS). HEC-HMS is a physically based, semi-distributed model that uses the weather and spatial information of soil and landuse of the basin for deriving the inputs for the model. A hydrological rainfall-runoff model is developed for the Kaligandaki River basin, with outlet at hydrological station 420, Kotgau, of Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM). The model was then validated at DHM station 420, Angsing, of Kaligandaki River. Model generated subbasin wise infiltration rates and existing landuse were analysed and it was found that sub-basins with dominant landuse as forest had high infiltration rate among prevailing landuse types. Conversely, low infiltration rate was observed for barren area, snow/glacier and grassland landcover type dominated subbasins. A positive correlation among rainfall rate and infiltration rate was seen with linear increase in infiltration rate for an exponential increase of average rainfall intensity. Infiltration rate was found to have positive correlation with the Hydrologic Soil Group types as suggested by NRCS. Moreover, the study signified a greater impact of landcover over soil types on infiltration rates. Whereas, no significant impact of basin slope on infiltration rate could be identified, which may be due to preclusion of multiple topographic features. Understanding the impacts of rainfall intensity and surface characteristics on infiltration enables proactive measures to mitigate the issues like landslide and reduce flooding and soil erosion by improving infiltration rates through surface condition assessment.","PeriodicalId":471152,"journal":{"name":"Journal of engineering, technology and planning","volume":"185 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135879200","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In light of computational tools and algorithms that revolutionize architectural design, enabling intricate and complex building geometries within shorter timeframes and heightened efficiency, this study aims to underscore the potential of algorithmic façade design. It focuses on contextual integration, utilizing the Newari lattice window as a foundational element for design exploration. The study employed computational modeling with parametric tools, scripting, and generative algorithms to create digital models that reflect the Newari lattice window pattern and fractal geometry. It utilized Text-Based Language (TBLs) like Python and Visual-Based Language (VBLs) like Grasshopper for visual experimentation and precision. Demonstrated through the re-design of the façade of the existing commercial building, Civil Mall, a significant building in Kathmandu Valley’s urban landscape, the research showcases algorithmic prowess in seamlessly integrating traditional Newari wisdom into intricate geometrical patterns. By transcending manual methods through recursion, iteration, randomness, and embracing unforeseen possibilities, the study establishes a foundational reference, enriching Nepal's architectural discourse beyond the traditional versus modern binary. This might be helpful in fostering a distinctive modern architectural language unique to Nepal. The study holds potential for further research on the prevailing traditional architectural forms and geometry in the country.","PeriodicalId":471152,"journal":{"name":"Journal of engineering, technology and planning","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135879030","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Boundary wall is one of the popular applications of precast concrete. H-posts used in boundary walls have plain concrete grooves and their shear strength is not studied well. While theoretical shear resistance of the groove based on concrete codes is greater than the likely wind load, this study experimentally validates the shear strength of such grooves by performing structural testing. Five test series with two repetitions are tested. Two grades of concrete are tested with plain grooves and grooves having reinforcement studs. Shear resistance of the grooves is at least 8 times greater than the maximum wind load. The ultimate failure occurs at the stem of the grooves for the plain concrete grooves, but panels fail in bearing for the specimens with shear studs at grooves.","PeriodicalId":471152,"journal":{"name":"Journal of engineering, technology and planning","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135826269","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective of this study is focused to describe and compare the migration process of labour migrants between Nepal and India. With pragmatism paradigm of post-positivism, mixed methodology (QUAN-qual) has been implemented to explain the research questions, where quantitative is predominant methodology. Quantitative method included survey with a sample of 650 households and qualitative method included one focus group discussion with both migrants group and two key Informant Interviews (KII) having long experience and knowledge in Nepal-India migration. For this research, Bhimdatt Municipality of Kanchanpur district is selected for the study area. The study showed that about 30 percent people from Bhimdatt Municipality migrate to the capital city Delhi. Similarly, 16 percent to Karnataka, 11.4 percent to Punjab, 10.6 percent to Maharashtra, 7.2 percent to Uttarakhand, 6 percent to Haryana and others move to Gujarat, Himanchal Pradesh, Goa, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan. This finding challenges Revenstein's theory of migration in which the distance between the origins determines the volume of migration between place of origin and destination i.e., higher the distance, lower the volume of migration and vice versa. The main source of information seems to be generated with relatives and friends (50.9%) for both the migrants. The movement of Nepali labour migrants is found to different big Indian cities with longer distance however Indian labour migrants to Nepal choose near distance as their destination. Near distance, open border and social relationship (network) are the main causes of selection of their particular destinations.","PeriodicalId":471152,"journal":{"name":"Journal of engineering, technology and planning","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135879199","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
