It further explores how young people with (un)disclosed minority sexual identities navigate within these discursive or affirming dialogs that follow. Nine (9) participants (3 lesbian and 6 gay students) shared their narratives through one-to-one interviews on family dialogs after viewing minority sexual identities scenes in popular soap operas. The participants were selected through convenient and purposive sampling. Findings shows while minority sexual identities was a silent topic at home and marked with repression, repulsion, and threads in some families, other families appreciated the visibility, openness and realities of the contemporary South Africa. Three themes were identified. They are (1) normalization, heteronormativity & (self) regulation, (2) affirming heterosexual reactions and (3) navigating the family relations beyond the soap operas. Soap operas should be strongly considered as a pedagogical tool in various learning environments to solicit discussion about sexual diversity.","PeriodicalId":46967,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF GLBT FAMILY STUDIES","volume":"16 1","pages":"475 - 487"},"PeriodicalIF":3.4,"publicationDate":"2020-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/1550428x.2019.1686720","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45287010","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Literature supports one persistent argument against same-sex parenting which focusses on the concern for children’s wellbeing, whereas lesbian and gay parents’ ability is sometimes evaluated positively. In particular, the belief that children need both a father and a mother impacts the evaluation that same-sex parents are unfit to raise well-adjusted children. The present research aimed to investigate linking mechanisms and conditional processes underlying the evaluation of same-sex parents’ ability. Cisgender heterosexual Italian participants (N = 320) read one of four vignettes describing a family situation – two types of same-sex (step)parents (i.e., lesbian and gay (step)parents) vs. two types of different-sex (step)parents (i.e., heterosexual (step)parents) – in which a child misbehaved in the context of a mild family disagreement. After reading the vignette, the participants rated parenting ability and to what extent the child’s misbehavior was attributable to the parenting relationship. Moderated-mediation analyses indicated that same-sex (step)parents were perceived as being less capable parents compared to different-sex (step)parents by giving them greater responsibility for the child’s misbehavior, among participants with medium and high levels of gender role beliefs. Implications for research on sexual discrimination are discussed.","PeriodicalId":46967,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF GLBT FAMILY STUDIES","volume":"17 1","pages":"273 - 291"},"PeriodicalIF":3.4,"publicationDate":"2020-10-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/1550428X.2020.1835596","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42671404","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methodological barriers, including the researcher’s white identity, language usage, and the political context, are used as examples of challenges gaining access to potential research participants. The research participants voiced ideas about how to provide sensitive, safe, and inclusive research that focuses on the unique perspectives of queer families. Discussions with these families underscore the importance of researcher reflexivity and partnering with individuals from the groups one wishes to work with to derive unique methods for collecting data. In this article the researcher is regarded as positioned as both insider and outsider and between these two positions. The examples outlined in this article draw attention to the plurality of queer families’ experiences and the need for intersectional methodologies. Suggestions for future research include the creation and examination of social justice-oriented methodology through which African-American-parented queer families’ experiences can be better understood.","PeriodicalId":46967,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF GLBT FAMILY STUDIES","volume":"17 1","pages":"214 - 230"},"PeriodicalIF":3.4,"publicationDate":"2020-10-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/1550428X.2020.1823292","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42939633","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In a European study, 35 gay fathers and 33 heterosexual fathers answered questionnaires with respect to their parenting style with their first-born child, temperament characteristics of that child, and their own personality. The results indicate that gay fathers show higher levels of warmth and cooperation with their partner than heterosexual fathers. Gay fathers also reported less irritation if their first-born child displayed a negative temperament. No differences in the parenting style were found with respect to the sex of their child. Our results contribute to the limited empirical research about same-sex male parents and parenting style.","PeriodicalId":46967,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF GLBT FAMILY STUDIES","volume":"17 1","pages":"102 - 117"},"PeriodicalIF":3.4,"publicationDate":"2020-08-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/1550428X.2020.1806769","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43146506","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the context of continued controversy surrounding children’s gender role development in sexual minority parent families, the current study examined gender presentation (i.e., appearing gender-conforming or nonconforming) among adopted children and their lesbian, gay, and heterosexual parents across two time points over a five-year period (Wave 1: N = 106 families, child Mage  = 36.07 months; Wave 2: N = 96 families, child Mage  = 8.34 years). Children’s and parents’ gender presentation were observed and rated, focusing on gender-typed clothing and accessories, and then children’s gender presentation was compared with their self-reported friendship quality. Children and parents alike generally demonstrated a gender-conforming presentation; there were limited differences by parental sexual orientation (e.g., lesbian mothers displayed greater nonconforming presentation than other parents). There was also no difference by parental sexual orientation in children’s reports of friendship quality. Gender presentation was associated across time, with children’s nonconforming gender presentation in Wave 1 being positively associated with their nonconforming presentation in Wave 2. Children’s nonconforming gender presentation was negatively associated with children’s friendships with an interaction effect such that gender-nonconforming girls, but not boys, reported lower quality friendships.","PeriodicalId":46967,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF GLBT FAMILY STUDIES","volume":"17 1","pages":"231 - 250"},"PeriodicalIF":3.4,"publicationDate":"2020-08-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/1550428X.2020.1802382","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43615752","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Given that such research utilizes a heterocentric lens, it is difficult to discern whether prior findings would also extend to SMW. Additional research is, therefore, warranted to identify if the theoretical foundation of attachment is relevant in understanding the relationship functioning of SMW. This study, therefore, sought to examine attachment dimensions (i.e., anxiety and avoidance) as predictors of relationship functioning variables and to assess for what, if any, differences exist between two groups: (a) heterosexual women and (b) SMW. An online survey was distributed to 166 women currently within relationships. There were no significant differences in relationship functioning variables nor in attachment dimensions between groups. Attachment anxiety explained over 31% of the variance in relationship satisfaction, over 39% of the variance in sexual satisfaction, and over 33% of the variance in relationship commitment between both groups. Conversely, attachment avoidance explained almost 18% of the variance in sexual satisfaction, but not did predict relationship satisfaction nor relationship commitment. These findings are further discussed in the context of limitations and clinical implications for practice.","PeriodicalId":46967,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF GLBT FAMILY STUDIES","volume":"16 1","pages":"434 - 451"},"PeriodicalIF":3.4,"publicationDate":"2020-08-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/1550428X.2019.1633452","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45681494","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Informed both by the life stories of gay, lesbian, and bisexual (GLB) migrants who are married or raising children with a same-sex partner in Belgium and the Netherlands and by the accounts of their parents living in Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries with a constitutional protection of heterosexual marriage, this study addresses this gap. It also takes the inquiry a step further by situating it within the framework of contrasting normative expectations. This approach identifies how parents' responses and disclosures, though firmly situated in the context of their homonegative CEE environments, also negotiate new expectations formed by their GLB offspring in GLB-friendly Belgian and Dutch environments. In addition, this study highlights both the parents' difficult negotiation of same-sex marriage and the role of children in facilitating the acceptance of same-sex families in the CEE context. The implications of these patterns—particularly the transformative power of same-sex marriage and nonheterosexual reproductivity—are further situated into a wider intimate citizenship debate on the consequences of the inclusion of GLB individuals into the mainstream institutions.","PeriodicalId":46967,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF GLBT FAMILY STUDIES","volume":"16 1","pages":"418 - 433"},"PeriodicalIF":3.4,"publicationDate":"2020-08-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/1550428X.2019.1650407","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44404967","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Accordingly, it is logical to expect these stepfamilies might be particularly vulnerable to adjustment difficulties, and scant literature demonstrates some of these. Other literature suggests some queer stepfamilies might be particularly flexible, adept, and less rooted in heteronormative ideals (e.g., expecting queer repartnerships to function like first partnerships) when adjusting to stepfamily life. However, the processes these families use to navigate stepfamily formation and adjustment are relatively unexplored. The current phenomenological study identified the strategies queer stepfamilies used to navigate early stepfamily life and how combinations of strategies represented larger pathways of family formation. Data came from family, couple, and individual focal child interviews about the lived experiences of six queer stepfamilies. Participants reported strategies consistent with Oswald’s [(2002). Resilience within the family networks of lesbians and gay men: Intentionality and redefinition. Journal of Marriage and FamilyFamily, 64(2), 374. 383, doi:10.1111/j.1741-3737.2002.00374.x] redefinition and intentionality framework. Variations in how these strategies were used led to the identification of three pathways. In contrast to a traditional monolithic view of queer families, our findings identify important within-group variations. The strategies and pathways suggest important implications for how practitioners might conduct assessments and carry out a strengths-based course of treatment or psychoeducation.","PeriodicalId":46967,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF GLBT FAMILY STUDIES","volume":"74 9-10","pages":"368 - 384"},"PeriodicalIF":3.4,"publicationDate":"2020-08-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/1550428X.2019.1673866","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41290317","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
