Nonetheless, by imposing coherence on something that was, in his own estimation, “messy and exceedingly complicated,” Pargas provides scholars and students alike with a clear and usable set of tools to think about space, migration, and security (7). To do so, he musters an array of methods and approaches. On the one hand, Freedom Seekers is a legal and constitutional history of Black liberty in which statutes and court cases loom predictably large. On the other hand, it is also a human history attentive to motivation, opportunity, and contingency. Black actors from James Somerset to Margaret Morgan play prominent roles throughout; Pargas takes pains to remind readers that enslaved people were never passive passengers on the Underground Railroad. Quite the contrary. They were self-emancipators. They freed themselves. Freedom Seekers is never flashy. The language is generally flat; no one would ever mistake Pargas’ prose for poetry. Some of the terminology (for instance, slaves, masters, and runaways) is also unhelpful and outdated. Yet the analytical payload delivered between these covers is remarkable. Pargas’ book not only builds upon his 2018 edited volume about the same subject but also effectively synthesizes the profusion of recent work about practical abolition by Baumgartner, Harrold, Walker, Blackett, Churchill, and many others.","PeriodicalId":46755,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Interdisciplinary History","volume":"53 1","pages":"537-539"},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46161391","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The debate hinged on whether such buildings had sufficient aesthetic and/or historical interest to be saved. When it was decided to tear them down, they were frequently replaced by rather soulless and disliked high rises. Attention is paid to the important role the numerous local amenity societies played in these decisions, though theremight have beenmore discussion of the relevant activities of the more national and quite active organizations such as the Victorian Society. These are complicated stories, perceptively handled, and generally involving the interplay, sometimes cooperative and sometimes not, of local groups, the local Council, and the local MP. There were many different views on what did or should shape the environment, as the buildings with which one interacts regularly, whether by living or working in or near them, play major roles in determining one’s quality of life. These questions overlapped with the construction of motorways, which were deemed necessary by the vast increase of car ownership. There are chapters dealing with individuals—the decline of the number of dockers, the changes among the cabbies affected by the growth of the suburbs, and other issues. To qualify as a taxi driver, for example, one had to pass the very difficult test, “The Knowledge,” attesting to having memorized the very complicated routes necessary for getting around London’s streets. There are several darker and important chapters on the growth of racism, triggered in large part by the vast influx of West Indians whowere needed for their labor but whose presence led to tensions and confrontations, difficult relations with the police, and serious riots in Notting Hill in 1958 and 1976. An intriguing chapter discusses how tourism affected the making of post-war London. Although few individuals are specifically discussed in the narrative, there is a rich sense of those who played significant roles in the shaping and making of post-war London, ranging from the homeless and squatters to members of local Councils and other prominent figures. These were decades in which London both held to continuity and changed greatly. During this time, the city was transforming itself from a gritty, vast community made of what one might call villages to an equally vast conurbation with strong connections to its past, yet with a fresh face.","PeriodicalId":46755,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Interdisciplinary History","volume":"53 1","pages":"529-531"},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43385457","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A longitudinal analysis of data collected in Italian provinces, using random intercept models, reveals the extent to which the displacement of death was the result of demographical, socio-structural, and cultural processes and the extent to which the influence of these processes differed geographically throughout Italy. Results show that the displacement of deaths to hospitals during this period was largely due to the growing availability of medical facilities, to changes in the causes of death among the elderly, to decreasing family size, and to urbanization. The influence of the family and urbanization is most evident in northeastern Italy, where changes from complex to simple household structures became more common during the twentieth century.","PeriodicalId":46755,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Interdisciplinary History","volume":"53 1","pages":"439-469"},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45773053","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

His failed attempt to conceal that he had married a prostitute ultimately led him to an ill-advised, and self-contradictory, endorsement of Belgian King Leopold II’s establishment of the Congo Free State. Indeed, Twiss’ every professional accomplishment is now subject to a severe re-assessment in the light of his willingness to do Leopold’s dirty work and thus place millions of Congolese in serious harm’s way. More Congolese would have lived, and Africa might have remained less scrambled if Twiss had not married a prostitute and been exposed as a fabulous mountebank.","PeriodicalId":46755,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Interdisciplinary History","volume":"53 1","pages":"509-515"},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46877082","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The author, for example, includes only a brief discussion of collectivization (71–74). Collectivization was the single most important event in Soviet Russia’s agrarian history, but based on the author’s abbreviated discussion, the reader would be mystified about what collectivization was and why it was undertaken. Further, why is the role of the state at times active and other times passive in introducing or allowing foreign foods to influence the Russian diet? Why was the impact of foreign food so transformative to the Russian diet in the post-Soviet period, a diet that in chapter 1 the author depicted as inherently tied to Russian culture and identity? The book is intended as an introduction, but brevity is not always a virtue. In sum, the author has achieved a Herculean task in tackling the history of Russian food. The introductory reader will benefit from the wealth of material and scope of her coverage. At the same time, she raises as many questions as she answers.","PeriodicalId":46755,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Interdisciplinary History","volume":"53 1","pages":"534-536"},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43442821","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The last section of the books consists of two chapters that discuss the arms, acts of sabotage, and networks with which the maroons countered the effects of the repressive policies of the government. The colonial authorities’ policy of allowing slave owners to re-incorporate re-captured rebels and runaways back into their workforces enabled former fugitives to share their radical outlook with recently arrived bozales. Such was the context in which the slave rebellion of August 1791 ignited. Eddins’ research methodology alleviates some of the problems that researchers have typically encountered when trying to reconstruct the undocumented experiences of enslaved Africans in the Americas. It contributes new insights to studies by James, Geggus, and Dubois, and especially by Fick and Blackburn, who investigated the role that maroons played prior to the slave rebellion on Saint Domingue. Her study, however, might have benefited from some attention to the plantation studies of Foubert, whose work details the nature and composition of a number of fugitive slave communities. She might also have compared the dynamics of marronage on the French colonies Guadeloupe and Martinique with that on Saint Dominque to complete her picture. Nonetheless, Eddins’ important study will greatly benefit students and scholars of the Caribbean and the African Diaspora.","PeriodicalId":46755,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Interdisciplinary History","volume":"53 1","pages":"551-553"},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44248931","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Each of these are interdisciplinary concerns, and Anderson’s approach is shaped by and contributes to two key cross-disciplinary frameworks that have oriented studies of global history for at least the last thirty years—empire and knowledge. Part I of the book examines in detail how empires and states used convict labor (often alongside or instead of other forms of coerced labor) to secure territories and borderlands, to clear forests and transform other environments, to settle and farm, and to build crucial infrastructure. Part II shows how knowledge of the convict system itself was generated and circulated, but also that convicts were part of the production and circulation of global forms of knowledge about bodies, nature, and society, particularly in the nineteenth century. Convicts were involved in exploration and natural history at the margins of empire, but also in studies that used new techniques of bodily measurement and social science to test theories of medicine, criminality and race, and of changing social structures. While these are histories of power and control, Anderson is constantly alert to the ways in which convicts resisted, subverted, and moved against authority in order to make their own lives where they could and to produce, reproduce, and circulate radical and subversive political ideas. Overall, Convicts: A Global History is a remarkable achievement, a work of global history based on many years of research that restores a subaltern group to its place in the world through both a panoramic overview and the tracing of individual lives lived in extremis.","PeriodicalId":46755,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Interdisciplinary History","volume":"53 1","pages":"518-520"},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45224317","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Baughan’s support for biopolitical and other critical approaches suggests that Save’s function and effects are related to the broader order. But, if she is really uncertain about what Save was and did, she has missed an opportunity to say why she cannot pin it down after years of intense study. Perhaps her ambivalence says something about the ontological ambiguities and precarities of humanitarianism? Baughan might have used the conclusion to return to this observation. Despite these concerns, and a few unforced errors (like the erroneous founding date of 1853 for the International Committee of the Red Cross), Baughan’s contribution to our understanding of the life and times of one of the world’s premier aid organizations is well worth reading and pondering.","PeriodicalId":46755,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Interdisciplinary History","volume":"53 1","pages":"642-644"},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49637517","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
