This hope is in line with policy approaches adopted by global organisations such as UNESCO and the World Bank in which learning is characterised as the vehicle through which transformation, self-actualisation and social development can occur. In order to provide young people the opportunity to experience such self-discovery, there has been a growth in internships which serve to facilitate young people’s transition from education to work. This paper explores the more sinister sides of such experiential learning. We map the ways in which youth learn about racial inequalities and class privilege through internships. Drawing on focus groups conducted with youth in Singapore, a global city with a multiracial population and a strong orientation towards meritocracy, we explore young people's discussions of their ‘disparity learning’. During internships, youth learn about workplace exclusion on the basis of race and gender, social structures of privilege and the hegemony of corporate power. A critical analysis of this literature was carried out to gain a deeper understanding of the scope of these interventions in bolstering success among Indigenous people in vocational education. Three axes of analysis were used to examine 24 academic papers: the interventions featured in these papers, the conception of social justice in education (i.e. equality of place, equality of opportunity, equity and inclusion, and decolonisation) underpinning these interventions, and their effects on success. The findings paint a picture of the relevance and scope of initiatives that can foster Indigenous student success in vocational education and at the same time reveal the limitations of these studies. They also show which conception of social justice in education appears the most promising. Educators are tasked with helping students to identify racist beliefs and reduce worldwide organisational racism in the retail industry. Consistent with this goal, 166 urban college students in the U.S. provided physical appearance, behaviour, and family characteristics comprising their stereotype of a juvenile shoplifter. After reading one of 10 shoplifting vignettes with different combinations of sex and race/ethnicity of 14-year-old shoplifter, students made decisions relevant to identification, surveillance, and consequences. Marginalised juveniles were selected the most for surveillance and given harsher, formal consequences consistent with predictions they would recidivate. The findings suggest that instructors must implement specific changes in their curriculum to guide students towards learning objective prevention measures instead of relying on discriminatory offender profiling.
