The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility and effectiveness of transverse friction massage on pain and quality of life in women with chronic pelvic pain. A total of 20 women participated in this study. Eight sessions of transverse friction massage were performed twice a week for 4 weeks, with each session lasting 30 minutes. Pelvic floor muscles (in terms of tenderness, trigger point, spasm and scar presence) were evaluated by digital palpation by an expert physiotherapist. The outcome measures used were the visual analogue scale, the 36-item Short Form-36 Survey and the Beck Depression Inventory. Participants were evaluated before treatment, at the end of the treatment, and 4 weeks after the end of the treatment. Participants' mean age was 49.7 ± 0.31 years. There was a decrease in pain intensity and an increase in quality of life scores (P<0.001), but no statistically significant improvement in depression status at the end of the treatment (P>0.001). Four weeks after the end of the treatment, significant decreases in pain severity, quality of life and depression were observed (P<0.001). Transverse friction massage is a feasible treatment option that can safely be used by physiotherapists to treat patients with chronic pelvic pain. It is inexpensive and can help to reduce pain and increase patients' quality of life. Randomised controlled trials are recommended to further confirm the findings from this study.","PeriodicalId":46562,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Therapy and Rehabilitation","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2023-06-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48443571","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, little is known about autonomic adaptation to postural changes during early mobilisation. The aim of the present study was to clarify the recovery process of autonomic dysfunction after acute stroke regarding adaptation to postural changes. A total of 23 patients (mean age 60 ± 11 years) were included in this observational study. Those with a history of arrhythmia, heart failure and diabetes mellitus with diabetic neuropathy were excluded. Autonomic functions were assessed using heart rate variability. Electrocardiograms were recorded when the patients were lying down, sitting up and then lying back down again for 5 minutes in each position. The indices of heart rate variability, total power, high frequency band and low frequency/high frequency ratio, which correspond to total, parasympathetic and sympathetic activity respectively, were calculated to evaluate participants' autonomic function during the 7 days after the onset of stroke. From days 3 to 7 after stroke onset, the low frequency/high frequency ratio was significantly higher, and the total power and high frequency were reciprocally lower in the sitting position than in the supine position. On day 7, the total power and high frequency were significantly higher while the low frequency/high frequency ratio was lower than the total power and high frequency values that were recorded on the second and third days after stroke. Blood pressure levels and heart rates also changed, corresponding to changes in heart rate variability. The patients' autonomic function, as well as heart rate and blood pressure levels, changed gradually during the first 7 days after onset of stroke. The results could lead to optimised clinical practice in safe early stroke rehabilitation.","PeriodicalId":46562,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Therapy and Rehabilitation","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2023-06-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44852540","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Healthcare professionals play an essential role in assisting individuals who have dementia and their caregivers. This research aimed to investigate the level of knowledge about dementia among healthcare professionals in Kuwait. Healthcare professionals from seven public hospitals in Kuwait participated in the study. The participants’ knowledge level was measured using the Dementia Knowledge Assessment Scale. A total of 1005 participants (36.5% males and 63.5% females) from various healthcare occupations were included in this study; physicians (n=120), occupational therapists (n=31), physical therapists (n=107), pharmacists (n=90), and nurses (n=657). The overall knowledge about dementia was generally low, with an overall mean score of 18.99 out of 50 (standard deviation 5.54). A lack of knowledge about dementia was identified among healthcare professionals in Kuwait. The findings demonstrate the need for more training to improve knowledge and increase awareness about this disease. Improved knowledge of dementia should lead to improved health care provided to patients living with dementia and support caregivers in managing the disease.","PeriodicalId":46562,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Therapy and Rehabilitation","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2023-05-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41906187","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this study was to compare occupational competency and values between typically developing children and children with leukaemia. In this pilot cross-sectional study, 102 children (52 typically developing children and 50 children with leukaemia) aged 7 to 13 years were assessed using the Child Occupational Self-Assessment tool, which includes occupational competency and occupational value scales for each item. The independent t -test analysis demonstrated that there was a significant difference between the two groups on the competency scale (P=0.02). However, there was no significant difference between the two groups in the value scale (P=0.07). Children with leukaemia feel less competent in carrying out everyday activities than typically developing children. Occupational competency interventions should be prioritised in occupational therapy services.","PeriodicalId":46562,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Therapy and Rehabilitation","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2023-05-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42203620","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, guideline adherence remains undocumented. The aims of this study were to describe the low back pain treatment interventions and adherence to clinical practice guidelines by physical therapists in the State of Kuwait. A total of 200 questionnaires were distributed to a convenience sample of physical therapists working in governmental hospitals who treat a variety of neuro-musculoskeletal conditions. The questionnaire contained questions on patients and the treatments applied. Physical therapists with less than 1 year of clinical experience were excluded. Descriptive and inferential statistics (analysis of variance) were used. Overall, 132 physical therapists completed the questionnaire (response rate of 66.0%). One-third of physical therapists’ caseloads included 40-50% of patients with low back pain. Physical therapy treatments most commonly included non-evidence-based treatment, such as superficial heat, interferential therapy and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. Evidence-based treatment, such as exercises and passive stretching techniques, were less frequently used. There was no significant difference between the physical therapists’ years of experience, education or place of work and their treatment of choice. Some physical therapists in the State of Kuwait deviate from clinical practice guidelines and use non-evidence-based treatment instead of evidence-based treatment in the management of low back pain. Therefore, intensive training and revision to current treatment protocols are required.","PeriodicalId":46562,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Therapy and Rehabilitation","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2023-05-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41509699","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There has been increased interest in scapular postural correction in conjunction with the isometric chin tuck exercise. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical efficacy of scapular postural correction while performing isometric chin tuck exercises for the improvement of neck pain, neck and shoulder alignment and superficial neck muscle activity in patients with chronic neck pain. A total of 32 participants with chronic, non-specific neck pain were randomly divided into two groups (groups A and B, both n=16), who performed isometric chin tuck exercises alone or isometric chin tuck with scapular postural correction respectively. The participants were instructed to perform five sets of the exercise with 10 repetitions for 6 weeks. Measurements were taken pre- and post-intervention to determine Neck Disability Index scores, postural parameters (head, cervical and shoulder angle) and superficial cervical muscle activity (sternocleidomastoid, anterior scalene, splenius capitis). Analysis of covariance was used to compare the post-intervention scores. Significant differences were observed between groups A and B in the cervical angle (F1,29=4.538, P=0.042) and shoulder angle (F1,29=8.357, P=0.007), when compared to baseline values. Both group A (t=12.097, P<0.001) and group B (t=8.032, P<0.001) showed a significant reduction in Neck Disability Index scores compared to baseline scores. Both group A and group B showed a significant decrease in sternocleidomastoid (group A: t=6.637, P<0.001; group B: t=10.143, P<0.001), anterior scalene (group A, t=5.484, P<0.001; group B, t=8.063, P<0.001), and splenius capitis (group A, t=8.591, P<0.001; group B, t=8.258, P<0.001) muscle activity compared to baseline values. Isometric chin tuck alone and isometric chin tuck combined with scapular postural correction both showed significant reductions in neck pain and superficial neck muscle activity. Additional scapular postural correction training significantly increased the cervical angle and decreased the shoulder angle.","PeriodicalId":46562,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Therapy and Rehabilitation","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2023-04-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42961162","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
