Meritt.1 The decree first came to the present writer's attention during the research for Athenian Democrag in Transition,2 for it was inscribed by one of the more prolific cutters in that study, the Cutter of IG 112 334.3 Permission to publish the stone in full has now been generously granted by the Greek Ministry of Culture.4 The decree is on a fragment of white marble in the Epigraphical Museum in Athens preserving part of the top and right side of the original stone. The circumstances of discovery are not recorded. It is 0.275 m high, 0.28 m wide, and 0.13 m thick. Leventi","doi":"10.2307/148407","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2307/148407","url":null,"abstract":"THE FRAGMENTARY RELIEF PLAQUE presented in this paper is kept in the antiquities collection of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens under the inventory number ASS 13.1 It is sculpted in high relief and shows the lower half of the head of a youth; the neck appears never to have been sculpted (Pls. 34, 35). The iconography, which is unusual for a human head, attracted our attention and led to our efforts to identify the type of monument to which this piece belonged, as well as to detect the identity of the mysterious head. Nevertheless, I hope that their publication here may be of use to scholars in the future, when new materials come to light.
