Thus, this collection is characterised by contributions from scholars with different religious backgrounds and from different countries. The different methods and approaches of the projects refer to current developments in the respective countries and consider different facets of religious diversity. The significant contribution of the third part is the overview of Islamic religious education in different countries. In addition, the presentation of the wider social context of the respective countries in most of the chapters allows for a good understanding of both the opportunities and the challenges of Islamic religious education. For comparability between the countries, it would be helpful for readers if the chapters had similar structures. In general, the contributions stand unrelated to each other in this volume. A different structure or a bundling of the individual contributions by the editors could have made for more internal consistency of the book. However, this does not diminish the great merit of the editors to have collected diverse contributions on religious plurality. The range of chapters provides a rich source of information on perspectives and research projects of authors from different countries. Overall, this edited volume offers interesting insights into religious diversity with a clear focus on Islam and Islamic religious education and is recommended to anyone concerned with Islamic religious education.","PeriodicalId":45932,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Contemporary Religion","volume":"38 1","pages":"368 - 370"},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47769658","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the research of contemporary religion in Europe, many concepts have been developed in the attempt to capture a complex pattern of affiliation, practices, and beliefs among the majority populations in Western Europe. In a Scandinavian setting, however, one such concept, ‘cultural religion’, has appeared in several situations with various foci and emphases. This article analyses the use of ‘cultural religion’ and, more specifically, cultural Christianity through three different inquiries. We examine data from a qualitative method (focus group interviews). Building upon this study, we then analyse quantitative data from a survey, which is followed by an analysis of the concept in the public discourse. On the basis of the three case studies, we argue that, in the Danish sense of ‘cultural religion’, this is a term denoting national identity, shared values, emotions, and traditions. We raise the question how to use the terminology of ‘cultural religion’ in research on contemporary religion.","PeriodicalId":45932,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Contemporary Religion","volume":"38 1","pages":"261 - 281"},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47172252","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on interviews with women and men involved in these structures as well as on our observations during fieldwork, we reconstruct the gendered division of work in such organisations, with a special focus on differentiation within the area of religious functions. Drawing on integrative theories of gender (especially of Raewyn Connell) and on the new institutionalist understanding of organisations, we investigate how and why these transnational religious bodies resist the normative pressures regarding gender equality stemming from the egalitarian contexts in which they function (England, Belgium, and Sweden).","PeriodicalId":45932,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Contemporary Religion","volume":"38 1","pages":"305 - 324"},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44051423","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Yet, it is Otto’s vision of a common core of all religions that enables Melissa RaphaelLevine (chapter 6) to give a fascinating account of the numinous consciousness and modern Jewish thought and Tulasi Srinivas (chapter 7) to suggest ‘wonder’ as creating a new understanding of certain experiences “that transform our knowledge of what is by awakening us to realities of what can be” (181). It is this same vision of a common core that enables Robert Baum to explore the numinous in traditional African religions (chapter 9). As Baum recognizes, Otto was an heir of nineteenthcentury evolutionary accounts of religion and had relegated traditional religions to the category of pre-religious. However, Baum demonstrates that there are present in African religions not only those aspects that evoke fear and trembling (that Otto discerned) but also deities of care and compassion who can ease obstacles from people’s paths through life. What then is the relevance of Rudolf Otto to the contemporary study of religion? Alles reminds us that, for Otto, the category of religion is used strategically to address three principal concerns: firstly, that religion not be lost by deriving it from something else; secondly, that the diversity of empirical religions be preserved; thirdly, that religion as practised be rescued from dead theology. These are principles in the study of religion as valid now as they were a century ago and an enduring legacy of Otto’s work. They ensure now, as they did then, that the student of religion has a scholarly sensibility attuned still to the presence of the numinous in modern religious life.","PeriodicalId":45932,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Contemporary Religion","volume":"38 1","pages":"383 - 385"},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44459549","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It, too, deals with responses to boredom in the improbable context of lectures on tax regulations as found in an accountancy class. Its teacher is a Jesuit priest, which enables the main character of this unfinished work to find a “Jamesian divinity in the fundamental elements of his data-based bureaucratic world” (97). This broadly relates to what Mosurinjohn is perhaps seeking for the study: the right relationship between “psychic interiority and affective collectivity” (98). A depressive, Wallace left a two-page suicide note inside the manuscript. Somewhat of a celebrity writer working on the frontiers of the counterculture and postmodernity, he made two definite efforts to become a Catholic through the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA), although, in the end, did not convert. A similar sense of taking matters to a theological frontier seems to haunt this rich, condensed, and thoughtful work which opens out many vistas for further advance. The author works well across many disciplinary areas to produce a work of originality and creativity. In a sense the study is perverse for she has managed to open out a theology of the mundane, more usually treated as its graveyard.","PeriodicalId":45932,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Contemporary Religion","volume":"38 1","pages":"385 - 387"},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41790896","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
