The event attracts approximately 32 000 cyclists from around the world and is hosted in the city of Cape Town. The question underlying this research is, what are the motives for cyclists participating in this event. Therefore the purpose of this article is to determine the reasons (the travel/participation motives) that cyclists participate. The literature review recorded that little research has been done on travel motives of participants in sport events and this was the first of its kind in South Africa. The research was conducted by means of a questionnaire survey and 583 questionnaires were administered. A factor analysis was conducted to determine the travel motives. Five factors were identified socialisation, event attractiveness, personal motivation, escape & relaxation and event attributes. The motives for cyclists are primarily intrinsic. Some of these motives were confirmed by similar research in the field of leisure travel, but new motives were also noted.","PeriodicalId":45543,"journal":{"name":"South African Journal for Research in Sport Physical Education and Recreation","volume":"32 1","pages":"121-132"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2010-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70653156","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"教育学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, an understanding of the views of the people who consume sports is vital. The evaluation of consumer response to sport sponsorship is limited in the academic literature. This research was aimed to conduct a dimensionality, validity and reliability study of the Speed and Thompson Sponsorship Questionnaire in Turkey (2000). Eight hundred and fifty-two (852) university students participated in the study. The validity of the instrument was established by face validity and through construct-related evidence. The reliability of the instrument was tested by Cronbach Alpha which was in the range of .93 to .97 for all subscales (p<.01). Results indicated that the 55-item-11-component version of the Sponsorship Evaluation Scale is valid and reliable in measuring effects of sponsorship on the Turkish consumers' with respect to their sponsorship response.","PeriodicalId":45543,"journal":{"name":"South African Journal for Research in Sport Physical Education and Recreation","volume":"32 1","pages":"1-12"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2010-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70653370","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"教育学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Forty-eight wine farms participate actively in the Robertson Valley that forms part of the wine route and festival, which makes this wine festival unique. This paper presents the results of a survey that was conducted during the festival in June 2009, where visitors completed 424 questionnaires. The questionnaire consisted of three sections, namely (A) socio-emographic information, (B) travel behaviour and (C) statements pertaining to the management aspects of the event. The aim was to conduct a management appraisal based on the premise that different markets have different requirements. To achieve this aim, a factor analysis and an ANOVA were used to determine the significance of each visitor group (market) in relation to the key success factors of the event. Crosstabulation identified the visitors’ factor scores for each key success factor, where the Anderson-Rubin method was used to generate a score with a zero mean. A contrast test was used where the significance did not assume equal variances. The findings indicated that different visitor groups or markets had different perceptions of the key success factors contributing to the success of the wine festival. The implication is that a general evaluation by visitors gives a distorted view of the success of the event, since different markets have different requirements. The aim of this study was to analyse the possible differences between physical and motor development of pre-school children within poor and higher socio-economic status (SES). A group of 67 children between four months and 71 months were identified according to a random stratified sample of 50 families from a poor socio-economic background and were evaluated using measurements of height, weight and skinfolds (triceps, subscapular and calf). The Peabody Developmental Motor Scales - 2 (PDMS-2) was used to determine motor developmental status. The same procedure was followed with a group of 34 preschool children (age = 48-73 months) from higher socio-economic status. Covariance of analysis, adjusted for age, showed that children from higher SES performed predominantly better regarding some motor skills compared to the children from poor SES. Statistical and practical significant differences (p \u0001 0.05, Eta2 > 0.01) that were found indicated poorer development in the poor SES group regarding their locomotor, visual motor and fine motor standard scores, percentiles and gradings, and regarding their gross motor quotient, although the results indicated that the gross motor development of children living in higher SES also needs attention. The balance and object control of the low SES group were however better (p 0.01) compared to the high SES group. These results substantiate that the motor development of children living in poor socio-economic conditions are hampered by their environment, and that they should receive additional attention to prevent deficiencies in this regard. The aim of this study is to compare the prevalence rate for postural deviations and body composition status among two racial groups in South Africa. The sample (n = 216) consisted of 89 African girls and 127 Caucasian girls. Anthropometric (BMI and percentage body fat) and body posture measurements were performed. A posture grid and the New York Posture test were used for all postural assessments. Independent t-tests and effect sizes demonstrated that in the 11 and 13 year old group the Caucasian group had a significantly higher (p (p Caucasian group. The prevalence rate was high in both groups and the lack of awareness and the results of this study should support the development of more responsible educational and screening programmes in both rural and urban school environments. The identification of postural deviations is important for prevention, to encourage a healthier posture for children and to prevent resulting painful syndromes.","PeriodicalId":45543,"journal":{"name":"South African Journal for Research in Sport Physical Education and Recreation","volume":"31 1","pages":"119-133"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2009-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70653136","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"教育学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

What constraints to physical active do youth experience during leisure time? Are there relationships among constraints, motivation, and physical activity level? Of 1 280 youth randomly selected by a multi-staged cluster sampling technique, 1 109 completed questionnaires. The results of this study revealed that vigorously active participation in physical activity during leisure time for Korean youth was found to be negatively correlated with higher levels of constraints; youth who engage in a higher index of motivation tended to have lower overall perceived constraints on physical activity; youth who engage in a higher physical activity levels tended to have higher motivation index on physical activity participation. The findings of this study might be explained by the strength of motivation as an important factor of dealing with constraints and participating more frequently and vigorously in physical activity during leisure time for youth.","PeriodicalId":45543,"journal":{"name":"South African Journal for Research in Sport Physical Education and Recreation","volume":"31 1","pages":"37-48"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2009-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70652788","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"教育学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore it was deemed necessary to conduct an investigation into the situation of Life Orientation (LO), a new Learning Area in the NCS. As a reform, the NCS promised to improve the quality of education for all in SA. Seeing that the early childhood years are so important for the development of fundamental motor skills, the focus of this article will be on the Foundation Phase (FP [Grades R-3]) in the General Education and Training Band (GET). Since Physical Education (PE) resides within LO, the scope of the investigation is aimed at LO. The main problem was to determine the experiences of LO teachers regarding the implementation of LO and particularly the Learning Outcome, Physical Development and Movement (PDM) in the FP in selected primary schools in the Western Cape, a province in SA. Quantitative data captured by a questionnaire typifies the research design as a survey. Primary schools (N=124) were randomly selected of which 50 FP teachers (N=50) returned questionnaires. Summary statistics using frequency tables and histograms were utilised. The data were analysed by using Statistica 8.0 (STATSOFT, 2007). According to the data it seemed as if most aspects as stipulated in the NCS were attended to by FP teachers. However, the majority of FP teachers were not qualified to present PE which could impact negatively on the status of LO, and more specifically, have major consequences for the growth and development of the FP learners. It is recommended that the Department of Education (DoE) should take the initiative and lead in this regard to urgently provide specialist LO teachers for the FP. However, Higher Education Institutions (HEI's) should become more involved in training initiatives for prospective teachers in LO.","PeriodicalId":45543,"journal":{"name":"South African Journal for Research in Sport Physical Education and Recreation","volume":"31 1","pages":"147-162"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2009-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70653188","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"教育学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main objective of this project was to compile the profile of a potential talented and elite youth rugby player, primarily within the conceptual research model proposed by Salmela and Regnier (1983). Hundreds of elite youth rugby players, within the age range 10 to 19 years old, were tested on several anthropometric, physical and motor abilities, game specific skills, and injury epidemiology. The research project was extended to England and New Zealand, and the data compared with that of South African teams. Other possible variables of talent identification, including proprioception, balance, plyometric strength, injuries, and ethical behaviour, were also investigated. The aim of this research review is to provide scientific evidence concerning the profile of an elite youth rugby player, thereby providing variables, assessment tools, and recommendations to coaches, selectors, administrators, and scouts, which may be used in the identification, selection, and development of future elite rugby players. Hopefully, this research review will furthermore stimulate future research on talent identification and development within youth team sport.","PeriodicalId":45543,"journal":{"name":"South African Journal for Research in Sport Physical Education and Recreation","volume":"31 1","pages":"109-118"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2009-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70653101","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"教育学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is of great significance to hypertensive patients. Unfortunately the acute effect that resistance exercises have on blood pressure can be harmful. The seated single leg press was used in this study due to the availability of equipment and the controllability of it. Fifteen young males, which served both as the control and test group, were selected as participants and were familiarized with the protocol a week prior to testing. Each participant did the exercise according to the traditional (control - no rest) and an intermittent (test - 3s rest) method. Both methods were done at 60%, 75% and 90% 1RM to determine whether the differences in blood pressure response would be the same at different intensities for both methods. Results showed that the acute mean blood pressure response to the intermittent method was 7 mmHg lower than that of the traditional method at all the tested intensities. The aim of this study was to determine whether three seconds of rest between each repetition of a given exercise will limit the acute blood pressure response, if compared with the traditional method of resistance training of the same exercise.","PeriodicalId":45543,"journal":{"name":"South African Journal for Research in Sport Physical Education and Recreation","volume":"31 1","pages":"19-26"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2009-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70652710","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"教育学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
