While children's interaction in the museum is often hands-on and speaks to the physical emphasis that embodiment brings, observation of children's spontaneous engagement at a museum's Water Zone revealed opportunities and barriers to engagement with, and access to, science ideas in terms of what we call 'embodied proximity' and 'embodied dislocation'. Drawing on design considerations from these findings a set of purpose-built prototype exhibits were developed and deployed to examine how they supported children's embodied exploration of science. The findings highlight key design dimensions that support children's accessing and making meaning about science through fostering embodied proximity: considering palette of embodied features; applying direct multisensorial experience; developing temporal-positional contiguity; and designing opportunities for communicating experiences through the body.</p>","PeriodicalId":45516,"journal":{"name":"Visitor Studies","volume":"27 2","pages":"160-183"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2024-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11575232/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142677190","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Participants were randomly assigned to a control group (who experienced a normal visit) or a treatment group (who received additional values-based interpretive materials). A total of 719 participants in North America and 455 in Australia completed two surveys – one immediately after their visit and one four weeks later. Three hypotheses were supported by the data: Providing values-based interpretive materials influences visitors’ engagement during their visit; improves visitor learning; and increases visitors’ adoption of environmentally responsible behaviors. A fourth hypothesis was partially supported: Providing values-based interpretive materials is most beneficial for those who prioritize values other than self-transcendence. It is concluded that values-based interpretation can broaden the reach of zoos beyond traditional audiences and widen their impact on visitor uptake of environmental behavior.","PeriodicalId":45516,"journal":{"name":"Visitor Studies","volume":"26 1","pages":"181 - 201"},"PeriodicalIF":1.5,"publicationDate":"2023-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48953024","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Situated in the sociocultural context of Chinese science museums this phenomenological study explored the perceived contradictions between museum educators’ and visitors’ expectations from the educators’ standpoint. In this study, 23 museum educators from five Chinese science museums participated in face-to-face semi-structured interviews. Informed by Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) the outcomes suggest four thematic contradictions within the activity systems composed of museum educators and visitors. This study demonstrates the sociocultural complexities of educator-visitor relationships and offers suggestions for building a collaborative learning community for museum education in Chinese science museums. Moreover, the outcomes have relevance for other museums situated in similar cultures around the world where science museums and museum education are a relatively new and developing enterprise.","PeriodicalId":45516,"journal":{"name":"Visitor Studies","volume":"26 1","pages":"160 - 180"},"PeriodicalIF":1.5,"publicationDate":"2023-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44332268","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
