Tamanoi started his career as a historian of economics close to Kozo Uno (1897-1977), whose influence was so strong in post-war academia that a distinctive school of Marxian economics emerged under his name. Tamanoi was one of Uno’s first disciples to reconstruct Marxian economics as a basic theory of capitalism that can maintain itself on the basis of the transaction of commodities. When Tamanoi studied and began his academic career at the then Imperial Tohoku University in Sendai, Uno was a professor there. Both scholars moved from Sendai to newly founded departments of The University of Tokyo: Uno to its Institute of Social Science in 1947 and Tamanoi to its College of Liberal Arts in 1951. Tamanoi deviated from the Uno school or Marxian economics in the 1960s by advocating a dialogue between Marxian economics and the socalled modern economics, and further by promoting comparative studies of economic systems. He published Marxian Economics and Modern Economics in 1966 and introduced the basic Western literature of comparative economic system studies. In this period, his favourite scholars were economists who had broad integrative scopes of social sciences, such as J. A. Schumpeter and K. His discussions on the Corn Law question include some original ideas, which were different from those of his contemporaries such as David Ricardo (1772-1823) and Robert Torrens (1780?-1864), who were against the bill. One of West’s original ideas can be found in his argument about the effect of free importation of corn on domestic agriculture, of which Mawatari (1997, 85-86) provides a simple diagrammatic understanding that falls short of being satisfying.1 We formalize West’s idea into a tractable model and theoretically demonstrate that even if cheap foreign corn was freely imported, as far as the principle of diminishing returns in the production of corn is valid, producers in the home country would not completely disappear from the market.2 【Notes and Communications】","PeriodicalId":45456,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the History of Economic Thought","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72406603","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"经济学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sir William Petty developed his most important insights in the process of providing advice on taxation to the monarch. Adam Smith wrote with a view to influencing the habits of thought of both the educated layman and policy makers. Jane Marcet and Harriet Martineau brought early classical political economy to the masses. David Ricardo formulated foundational elements of the nineteenth-century classical system writing policy pamphlets and then entered Parliament with a view to putting policy making on a solid economic footing. Karl Marx’s intended audience was anything but the practitioners of the emerging science of political economy. Alfred Marshall buried his technical analysis in appendices to maximize the exposure of his work. John Maynard Keynes’s influence can be ascribed, without too much injustice, as much to his effectiveness outside the walls of Cambridge as within them and to the use by others of his ideas in that same public realm. Yet, despite this lengthy history of economists’ engagements with various publics, including those pulling the levers of policy, those writing on the history of economics have focused far more intently on the history of theory and the implications for the construction of a body of thought known as “economic analysis” than on the interplay among economists, economic ideas, and the public realm. It is as if the economic conversation went on solely within the space of academic departments of economics, even though those spaces are very recent creations.","PeriodicalId":45456,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the History of Economic Thought","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2019-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1017/S105383721900018X","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"57108579","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"经济学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
