Research activities during the second half of the twentieth century, compared to the evolutionary stages of other urban morphological schools in Europe, represent a period of mature development. Research activities can be divided into three phases which followed each other and later overlapped: emergence of morphological thought in the primary studies of settlements; development of a morphological approach within the formation of the national urban heritage system; and application of morphological techniques for modelling the spatial composition of towns and cities. Despite its local focus, the Lithuanian urban form research has the potential to complement the global landscape of urban morphology and contribute to the development of the field’s scientific and practical methodology. Therefore, the paper presents the development of national tradition of urban morphology, which evolved throughout the twentieth century, as well as comparing the Lithuanian experience with features of other European morphological schools.","PeriodicalId":45374,"journal":{"name":"URBAN MORPHOLOGY","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2022-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42300648","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite the recent interest on Chinese urban form, knowledge on the subject remains insufficient, lacking both a comprehensive framework and particular contributions on different aspects of its urban forms, agents, and processes of change. This paper addresses the second of these two challenges, contributing to the morphological description and explanation of ancient Chinese capital cities, specifically, the so-called four great Ancient Capitals of China – Luoyang, Xi’an, Nanjing, and Beijing. Due to the scarcity of sources and the complexity of these cities, the paper proposes a simplified analysis of the town plan, including the reading of street systems, plot patterns and building arrangements. This simplified analysis of the town plan can be used as a first approach to understand the physical form of a city. A comparison between the four cities is offered, identifying what is ‘particular’ about them and what is ‘general’, or common, to other ancient Chinese capital cities.","PeriodicalId":45374,"journal":{"name":"URBAN MORPHOLOGY","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2022-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42199408","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
